ASCD Awards Iowa ASCD Influence Grant - 4th Consecutive Year!

Dr. David Griffith, Policy Director of ASCD, shared his congratulations with Iowa ASCD, as we have received an ASCD Influence Grant for the 4th consecutive year. 

The purpose of the grant is to "develop the advocacy capacity of our members and to host a state-level "Day on the Hill" in February.

The selection committee commended Iowa for "continually enhancing and refining your efforts to make Iowa ASCD members more effective advocates." 

Iowa ASCD thanks Dr. Susan Pecinovsky and Dr. Pam Vogel for their leadership in this area!  Watch for their "No Water! No Ice" Challenge" that will be revealed in the next couple of weeks.

Jay McTighe

Conference Speaker and International Consultant

 

Jay McTighe brings a wealth of experience developed during a rich and varied career in education. He served as director of the Maryland Assessment Consortium, a state collaboration of school districts working together to develop and share formative performance assessments. Prior to this position, Jay was involved with school improvement projects at the Maryland State Department of Education where he helped lead Maryland's standards-based reform, including the development of performance-based statewide assessments. He also directed the development of the Instructional Framework, a multimedia database on teaching. Well known for his work with thinking skills, Jay has coordinated statewide efforts to develop instructional strategies, curriculum models, and assessment procedures for improving the quality of student thinking. In addition to his work at the state level, Jay has experience at the district level in Prince George's County, Maryland, as a classroom teacher, resource specialist, and program coordinator. He also directed a state residential enrichment program for gifted and talented students.

Assessment Strand: How do we know that students have learned?  How do we use assessments to assess and diagnose our students' progress in learning? How do we adjust our instruction based on the results of the formative assessments?

  

Teaching for Learner Differences

Instruction Strand:  How do we plan and deliver instruction so that we meet the nees of all learners in our classroom?  How do we respond if students struggle or don't learn and how do we respond when students have already learned?

School on the Move:  Perry Community School District

Perry Community School District (CSD) is proud to share that overall students in the district scored very well on the Iowa Assessments during the 2013-14 school year. Positive gains were seen on every test and in the majority of grade levels. These positive gains translated into very positive changes in the status of the district and schools in relation to No Child Left Behind, the federal education legislation that has been in place since 2000.

 

Students took the Iowa Assessments during the first two weeks in April. Students in grades 3 through 11 are tested in reading comprehension, mathematics, science, and in grades 3-5, Social Studies. Scores from students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 are used to establish the status of each school and district in relation to the No Child Left Behind legislation.

 

On August 1, the Iowa Department of Education sent notices to all districts in the state informing them of their status relative to the No Child Left Behind federal legislation. Perry CSD received very positive news, which is shared below.

The district experienced two very positive steps. The district was taken off the 'Watch' list for reading and removed from being a 'District in Need of Assistance' (DINA) for mathematics. This is due to significant improvements in student achievement among the elementary, middle, and high school.

 

The high school was completely removed from the 'Schools in Need of Assistance" (SINA) list for mathematics. The middle and elementary schools moved into 'delay' status for reading and mathematics. The high school and elementary advanced one year in SINA status for reading and mathematics, respectively.

 

All of these improvement are due to the tremendous effort among teachers to ensure that all students are learning at high levels. Various actions at each building contributed to the success of students. Examples of actions include lunch study table and after school homework club at the high school, teachers meeting with students before and after school as well as during lunch at the middle school, and teachers at the elementary level meeting weekly with literacy coaches to review student assessment data, learn new strategies to try in their classrooms, try those strategies, and share their successes and challenges.  

 

The district will build on these successes through focused professional learning for administrators and teachers. During this school year principals and teachers will focus on implementing the Iowa Core, integrating strategies for gathering evidence of learning and providing meaningful feedback to students, focus instruction around content and language objectives, and take targeted actions to continue creating a safe, supportive environment for all learners in each building. The district is very optimistic that these gains in student achievement will continue when students take the Iowa Assessments in April 2015.

The Book EVERY Curriculum Lead Needs:  Rigorous Curriculum Design by Larry Ainsworth

This is the book that every curriculum lead needs at his/her fingertips:  Rigorous Curriculum Design:  How to Create Curricular Units of Study that Align Standards, Instruction, and Assessment.

This book is divided into four parts. Here is a brief overview of each part by the author, Larry Ainsworth:

Part 1, Seeing the Big Picture Connections First, defines curriculum in terms of rigor, provides the background of this model, connects curriculum design to the "big picture" of standards, assessments, instruction, and data practices, previews the step-by-step design sequence, and introduces end-of-chapter reader assignments.

Part 2, Building the Foundation for Designing Curricular Units, explains the five steps that must first be taken to lay the foundation upon which to build the curricular units of study, and provides explicit guidelines for applying each step.

Part 3, Designing the Curricular Unit of Study-From Start to Finish, gives the "nuts and bolts" directions for designing a rigorous curricular unit of study, from beginning to end, and concludes with an overview of how to implement the unit in the classroom or instructional program. Formatively assessing students along the way, educators analyze resulting student data to diagnose student learning needs and then adjust ongoing instruction accordingly.

Part 4, Organizing, Monitoring, and Sustaining Implementation Efforts, addresses the role of administrators in beginning and continuing the work of implementation. These final three chapters provide first-person narra - tives and advice to administrators from administrators who have personally led the implementation and sustainability efforts of curriculum redesign and related practices within their own school systems.

Ainsworth has  endeavored to pull together all of the elements necessary for designing a rigorous curriculum, to position these elements in a sequential order, and to provide a step-by-step approach for constructing each one. His hope is that this road map will not only "show you the way" to design your own curriculum, but also allow you the flexibility of customizing it to fit your own purpose and needs.

As with the realization of any lofty vision, it will take a great deal of time, thought, energy, and collaboration to create and revise a single curriculum, let alone multiple curricula. The best advice Ainsworth offers is to regard whatever you produce as a continual "work in progress," to be accomplished over one, two, or three years, or even longer. As his friend and colleague Robert Kuklis points out, curriculum designers "shape and modify the process as they move through it. It is important that they know this is not a rigid, prescriptive procedure, but rather an opportunity for learning, adapting, and improving. This preserves fidelity to the process, encourages flexibility, and promotes local ownership."

Whenever people's spirits need lifting because the work seems so demanding, remind everyone that it is a process, not a one-time event. You are creating something truly significant-a comprehensive body of work that is going to serve your educators, students, and parents for years to come!

Evaluation Supplement Now Available for School Counselors

School Counselors must be evaluated on the Iowa Teaching Standards, however, the teaching standards do not necessarily correlate with the work of the school counselor. To ease this process, the Iowa School Counselor Association, in conjunction with other stakeholders, has created the Evaluation Supplement for School Counselors


This tool crosswalks the Iowa Teaching Standards with the School Counselor Competencies from the American School Counselor Association and provides rubrics to assist both the counselor and the administrator in moving forward. To assist with the process, a series of videos has been prepared and housed on our Heartland EA EduVision site. 

This video gives the "high-level" overview of the Evaluation Supplement with the history and process for determining how the Iowa Teaching Standards and SC Competencies intersect. The video also explores the ways in which this supplement can be used as a reflective tool for professional growth or in the evaluation process.

Heartland AEA 11 to Host Mini-Summit with Iowa Department of Education 

Heartland AEA will host an Iowa Department of Education Mini-Summit open to superintendents, curriculum directors, special education directors and other administrators and teachers who are responsible for providing oversight for a federal or state program/initiative. The mini-summit will be held on October 3, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines. 

The Iowa Department of Education will have representatives available from different program areas and state initiatives to give updates, share new information and answer questions.

Some of the programs/initiatives represented include the following:
New Iowa Core Website, C4K, Early Literacy, MTSS, TAG, Fine Arts and more!

Brad Buck, director of the Iowa Department of Education, will participate in a conversation facilitated by school administrators and speak to the participants over lunch. All participants need to register as lunch will be provided free of charge. Registration is available through the Heartland AEA professional development catalog
