Attention Teachers of Fourth and Fifth Graders:  Register Now for Conference to Impact the Learning in Your Classroom!

Iowa ASCD and ISEA are collaborating to offer a hands-on day of learning.  Join us in learning with practitioners across the state and leave with information, ideas, tools, strategies and networking opportunities for implementation of the Iowa Core in your classroom.

Three strands are offered at the conference for fourth- and fifth-grade teachers:
  • Teaching for Understanding - the Curriculum Strand:  What do all students need to learn, know, and be able to do?  How do we in our building/grade level connect our teaching with the students' learning expectations identified in the Core?
  • Assessment for Learning - the Assessment Strand:  How do we know that students have learned?  How do we use assessments to assess and diagnose our students' progress in learning?  How do we adjust our instruction based on the results of the formative assessments as we implement the Core?
  • Teaching for Learner Differences - Instruction Strand:  How do we plan and deliver instruction so that we meet the needs of all learners in our classroom?  How do we respond if students struggle or don't learn and how do we respond when students have already learned?
Date:  December 4, 2013

Location:  Prairie Meadow Conference Center; 1 Prairie Meadows Drive, Altoona, IA  50009 (just outside Des Moines)

Fee:  $100 if member of ISEA or Iowa ASCD; $150 for non-members (Note:  If a school district/building sends 4 or more teachers to the conference, the administrator comes FREE!)

Attention Southwest Iowa Schools - Authentic Task Could Earn Your School $5000

We know your students are Driven to Be the Best in academics, athletics, and in your communities.

WOWT 6 News and Performance Auto Group are giving students a chance to excel with an authentic task - the best part is your school could win a $5,000 grant and your students experience real-life work.  They are asking middle and high school students from across the WOWT 6 News viewing area to create a 15-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) that encourages their peers to have good driving habits (e.g., no texting, wearing a seatbelt). Students may work individually or in a team of up to four members. They must write and shoot their own videos, demonstrating their creative and communication skills.

December 6 at 5:00 P.M. is the deadline to upload the 15-second public service announcement on WOWT.com.  The judges will select six finalists, whose videos will be aired on the WOWT 6 News 10pm newscast the week of December 16th.  WOWT 6 News viewers will then vote online at WOWT.com December 16th-29th for their favorite Public Service Announcement. On December 30th, the PSA with the most votes will be announced in the 10pm newscast. Each student who created the winning PSA will receive a new iPad mini; their school will win a $5,000 grant. In addition, the winning PSA will air on WOWT NBC Omaha January through March, including during programming for the Sochi Olympic Games.

Great opportunity for a real-life task that could save lives - and earn money for your school!

Debunking Some Common Core Myths

ASCD combats widespread myths about the Common Core State Standards, the foundational documents for the Iowa Core.  They address misperceptions about the federal government's involvement in the standards, the cost of implementation, and the role of local schools and districts.

Myth 1: The Common Core standards were developed by the federal government.
  • FACT:  States developed the standards!  The nation's governors (NGA) and state education commissioners (CCSSO) spear-headed the development, working with educators, subject-matter experts, and researchers to write and review the standards.
Myth 2:  The federal government required states to adopt the standards.
  • FACT:  Adoption of the Common Core is voluntary.  All states but Alaska, Nebraska, Texas, and Virginia have chosen to adopt (and often adapt, like Iowa did with the additional 15%).  Minnesota adopted the English language arts but not the math.
Myth 3:  The Common Core standards include all academic subjects.
  • FACT:  The Common Core addresses only mathematics and English language arts standards. Standards for science, social studies and the arts are underway but they are not part of the CCSS.
Myth 4:  The Common Core standards will fully prepare students for college and their careers.
  • FACT:  Students need more than reading and math proficiency to be fully prepared for college and careers.  Kids need a comprehensive education that includes learning opportunities in the arts, civics and government, foreign languages, geography, health education, history, physical education, and science.

Myth 5:  The Common Core standards are a national curriculum that dictates what and how every educator must teach.

  • FACT:  The standards are not the curriculum.  They are the target for what students should know and be able to do.
You can check out the entire summary addressing five additional myths at  ASCD Policy Points - "Debunking Common Core Myths."
Leadership Tip:  The 30-Minute Book Read

The 30-Minute Book Read is a strategy that allows you to get a sense of the content of the professional books you purchase for your own reading.

How many of you have a stack of books you have purchased that are sitting on your desk (or on your iPad, iPod, Kindle, Nook) and you have not read?  (Yes, this tip works for your e-books as well - just learn to use the "bookmark" feature on your e-book device.)

How many of you say to yourself, "When I get some time, I will read this book or that book?"  Sorry!  Hate to tell you but you will never find time to read those books to the fullest extent - not even when you retire.

The 30-Minute Book Read is a strategy that enables you to know what is in each book and to mark that information for future use.  Here is what you do . . .
  1. Take no more/no less than 30 minutes to scan the book to get a sense of what is in it.  There are a variety of ways to scan the book.  Concentrate on one or two chapters or sections within a chapter.  Read just the first sentences of paragraphs.  The bottom line is that you develop a practice of skimming a book with enough understand that you can share with someone what content might be contained within that book.
  2. For those paragraphs, sections, or chapters that include educational topics that may be of great interest to you for future reference (e.g., coaching, change processes, culture building, conflict resolution, collaborative time), take a 3x3 stickie note and insert at the top of the page with just enough of the post-it note appearing above the page where you can write the topic/words of interest to you.  If reading an e-book, master the "bookmark" and it will do the same thing!
  3. When you have a future need to go back to gather information about the topic (e.g., mentoring teachers, formative assessment), you can quickly scan the books on your shelves with stickie notes (or bookmarks in your e-books) and determine immediately if they have a "section" on your topic.
