Susan Pecinovsky Named to ASCD Legislative Team
ASCD President Becky Berg recently appointed Iowa ASCD Director Susan Pecinovsky to a three-year term on the ASCD Legislative Committee. This committee is charged with creating ASCD's annual legislative agenda, which identifies the organization's policy priorities and guides its advocacy activities with the United States Congress and other policymakers.
The committee convenes annually in the fall to draft the agenda, which includes briefings with U.S. Department of Education officials and congressional staff as part of the agenda development process.
Berg recognized Dr. Pecinovsky's leadership and insight as an asset to this vital work. Her first meeting will take place on September 19-21, 2013, in Alexandria, VA. In addition to this and other meetings, Pecinovsky will take part in the Leadership Institute for Legislative Advocacy in Washington, D.C., on January 26-28, 2014, when ASCD will unveil the 2014 Legislative Agenda.

Off the Clock --> Competency-Based Education
Rose Colby, keynote speaker at the CBE Conference on June 26-27, and Fred Bramante share in Off the Clock: Moving Education from TIME to COMPETENCY, how student achievement can be based on mastering competencies instead of "seat time." The authors describe a uniquely 21st century learning environment in which . . .
- every student is engaged
- parents and students have more control over learning
- dropouts are all but eliminated
- curriculum becomes virtually limitless, project-based, and interdisciplinary.
They remind us that "the opportunity to reimagine public education is before us today. At no other time in public education have we been so challenged by the constraints of the economy, the public outcry for changes in financing personnel and resources, and the demand for accountability through testing."
They ask us to "imagine if our systems of learning were designed to move our students through achievement and not through time," the lynchpin that has held us in the 20th century model of public schooling.
They ask us to "imagine if our systems of regulating, financing, teaching, and learning were not captive to time, but instead were allowed to occur anytime, anyplace, anyhow, and at any pace," making learning a continuum of mastery.
They share with us how New Hampshire is living the vision - where "time and place will be the variables and achievement will be the constant."
Are you one of those talented leaders who is ready to embrace, or at the very least learn about, moving from a time-based to a competency-based system? Then read this book and join us at the Iowa ASCD Conference - Competency-Based Education: Define! Design! Deliver!

Do You Teach like a Pirate?
ASCD Emerging Leader Stefanie Rosenberg-Wager attended the National Council for the Social Studies Conference two years ago and "happened to stumble upon a session entitled, "Teach Like a Pirate." The title intrigued her and when shhe arrived at the session, the room was packed. Soon, a man dressed like a pirate arrived and Rosenberg-Wager thought, "Oh, what have I gotten myself into?" and it turned out to be "one of the best sessions I've attended at any professional conference."
The presenter, Dave Burgess, has turned his "teach like a pirate" concept into a movement. There is a weekly "teach like a pirate" (#tlap) Twitter chat each Monday night at 8 P.M. (Central) and Dave has recently published a book entitled Teach Like a Pirate: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator. The book is divided into three parts. Part I explains the "teach like a pirate" concept. Part II discusses how to build engaging lessons and gives over thirty hooks (pun intended!) to create these lessons. Part III talks about how to build a better pirate; meaning how can you take the concepts of the book and apply them to your own classroom in a consistent way.
Rosenberg-Wager shares, "This book is different from almost any other book I've read recently. It is a totally different way to engage students in the learning process and combines the idea of content engagement with 21st century skills." Check out the book on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
