A Business-like Approach to Divorce

Till re-evaluation do us part?

Mexico City officials are suggesting a businesslike approach to marriage.  The new civil code offers an option to enter a two year marriage contract which allows couples to reevaluate their relationship and determine whether or not they would like to opt out. The contract would include provisions on children and property division should the marriage terminate at the end of the two year period. The supporters hope that this option will make divorce a simpler and more straightforward process.

This proposal is gaining support in the predominately leftist chamber, and the statistics there show why. Roughly half of all marriages in Mexico City end in divorce and usually that occur within the first two years. It seems that lawmakers are just responding to trends; however, there is significant opposition from the Church, with Mexico having the second highest population of Catholics in the world. Calling it, "irresponsible and immoral", the spokesman for the Mexican archdiocese considers the code another "electoral theatric."

Whatever the result, the response from the media has a lot of people thinking about that two year marker and whether or not the US would ever see such an option. A vote in Mexico City is expected by the end of the year.

Facebook and Litigation

Social media: Fun to frightening!

In the news again, the ever-present social medium creates another caveat for users.

There is an emerging trend of situations making it to courtrooms that start with an altercation revolving around Facebook activity. Disapproval of statuses or other activities on personal pages have started some violent situations. Instead of arguing over "normal" things, like not calling or coming home late, couples are arguing over relationship statuses and whether or not someone uses the "like" feature for an activity. Some very simple, and arguably, insignificant factors are causing violent responses and sometimes, physical abuse.

Most importantly, for those of us who are able to use Facebook with some degree of sanity, it is important to know that the content you post and things you say can be used in court if necessary. Even being considered for jury duty may be affected by what you post on Facebook.

Users beware - what seems like an innocent expression of opinion may come back to haunt you down the road.

GOOD NEWS

for tax payers!

Candidates for Central Bucks School Board oppose policy on assessment appeals!

During economic times that are forcing families to make cuts in their budgets, school districts across the area have been trying to recoup their own budgets. Looking to taxpayers for help, Central Bucks school district has been pushing to appeal property assessments for residents of the district. District administrators feel properties in the area

have been under assessed, and residents are not responding well to the continued efforts. Many feel the appeals single out Doylestown residents whose homes are much older than other residents of the Warwick area, for example. Another concern is for older residents living on fixed income.

Because of the efforts of residents in the area looking to save on their taxes, the district lost $4 million from reassessments. The continued effort to appeal is in response to this loss and with elections around the corner, many of the candidates are opposing the continuation of assessment appeals.

Candidates feel that this process should not be the business of the school board and ought to be left to the county commissioner.

Avoiding the inevitable?

Interesting new numbers show that many people are simply not planning for their families, or themselves.

A global survey shows that 84% of parents across the 17 countries surveyed did not have wills. Parents in Canada were the most likely out of all countries surveyed to have written a will.

Beyond estate planning, UK and US adults were also least likely to want to live with their children later in life. With this in mind, it is interesting that parents avoid making plans - if something should happen to their health, they may end up living with their children despite the desire not to. Such a situation would be avoided by simple planning where such issues are fleshed out in advance.

The results beg the question as to why people are avoiding making plans that could become critical later in life - are we all in denial of aging and avoiding the reality? Whatever the reason, ignoring an inevitable part of life may only cause problems for loved ones during times of stress. Parents may also be taking themselves out of the driver's seat in the long run.

Fun Fact

President Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as our country's official day of Thanksgiving in 1863.

Health for the Holidays

Nutrition, Cold and Flu

Reuniting with family, eating, drinking and being generally merry are all wonderful components of the holiday season. As we all know by now, there are some pitfalls to the chilly weather and heavy doses of high fat food and drink. To battle gratuitous weight gain and serious sniffles, we compiled a few tips to help everyone get through the holidays.

Gauging emotions going into this time of year may be pivotal for some in battling weight gain. Studies have shown that emotional triggers during the holidays significantly contribute to overeating and weight gain. Sifting through your emotions related to holidays past and coping with feelings may help better prepare you and strengthen resolve to get through the holidays.

It also helps to make a plan about how you are going to handle the temptations that typically leave you defeated. Not to mention, how you are going to handle the people who insist on eating more as their guest. "My new sweater isn't going to fit, thanks anyway!"

Another obvious tip that is worth repeating is to wash hands often! With all of the food prep and contact with long lost friends this season, defend your body from foreign bacteria and stop the spread of flu. If you get the flu, take a day of rest and spare your innocent co-workers the threat of feeling as miserable as you feel - they will appreciate it and so will you. Of course, the flu shot, which is widely available can help you and your families avoid sickness.

Helping Make A Difference

Operation warm provides new winter coats to children in need through strategic and community partnerships, with a wide variety of donors and community organizations around the country.  Their vision is that every child, wearing a new winter coat, will be healthy, able to attend school regularly and develop strong self-esteem.  Donate today and help this winter, they are working to reach their one-millionth child

This month, we encourage everyone to donate a new winter coat to the Salvation Army in support of Operation Get Warm for a child in need.

With cold weather around the corner, this organization supplies coats for kids who need them all over the United States. The Northeast of course has dozens of participants and Pennsylvania has several organizations that collect coats. The easiest way to donate locally is by visiting a Salvation Army.
