"Hot Coffee": Is Justice Being Served?
A pro-plaintiff documentary, "Hot Coffee,"enlightens the general public about the misconceptions we have about civil lawsuits. In the 1994 court case of the woman who was awarded $2.9 million for spilling a cup of McDonald's coffee on herself, all Stella Liebeck, 78, asked for was the difference between what Medicare paid for and her medical bills. It was a jury that awarded her the large sum - which the jury noted represented a mere two days of McDonald's coffee sales. However, because of the success of the public relations campaigns, paid for by large companies, the documentary dives into how the civil justice system is not impartial.
The documentary looks to educate the consumers in order to begin to combat and challenge the public relations campaigns of pro-business groups. The creators dive into how these companies have launched a public relations campaign, have continued over the last two and half decades to convince the public that the U.S has out of control juries, too many frivolous lawsuits and a civil justice system that needs reforming. They have used anecdotes and half-truths in their efforts, for one purpose - to put limits on people's access to the court system, the one and only place where an average citizen can go toe to toe with those with money and power and still have a shot at justice.

Governor Corbett signs bill to expand the right to use deadly force in self-defense
Last week, Governor Tom Corbatt signed a bill that allows the use of deadly force in self-defense within the state of Pennsylvania that will be effective within the next sixty days. The bill allows a person to utilize a gun or other deadly force in self-defense in situations outside of a person's home or business. However, the use of deadly force is not justifiable if utilized if a person can safely vacate the premises, such as a home or business.
With gun control continuously being a controversial issue, this bill is stirring some controversy within the Commonwealth. Phil Goldsmith, president of the gun violence prevention group CeaseFirePA, said the signing was a "mistake" and called on Corbett and the bill's backers to "turn their attention to the gun violence plaguing communities" across the state. On the other hand, Rep. Scott Perry, R-York, sponsored the House bill and stated, "A criminal should never have an advantage over a citizen who abides by the rules of decent society, and today we finally achieved the goal of returning the right of self-defense to the law-abiding."

Harrisburg's Plea to God?
It is expected that the city of Harrisburg will finish off the year with a deficit of nearly $3.5 million, and it is only expected to get worse after that. The Department of Community and Economic Development has proclaimed that the city is on the brink of bankruptcy. In the face of all of this, officials have decided on a new tactic - they are turning to God to ask for help.
Harrisburg's problems started in 2003 with an unsuccessful incinerator project. Intended as a revenue booster, the project ended up costing the city millions of dollars, much of which Harrisburg is still paying off.
Despite the fervent efforts of Harrisburg's leaders, the city feels the effects of the crippling deficit. With no other choice, they are down on their knees asking for God's help. Many are even embarking on a three day spiritual retreat in search of God's guidance. Although their leaders, whose irresponsible spending caused the trouble in the first place, may see this as a helpful endeavor, the citizens of Harrisburg are dubious to say the least.

4th of July Safety Guidelines
The 4th of July weekend traditionally is celebrated with fireworks, cookouts and spending time with family and friends as part of celebrations of the nation's birthday. While having their outings, people need to use safety precautions, whether it pertains to driving or handling fireworks. Be sure to follow these safety guidelines with fireworks and sparklers:
Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
 Use fireworks outdoors only.
Keep lit sparklers at arm's length, away from your face, body or clothing, or someone nearby.
Keep lit sparklers away from flammable materials, such gasoline, hair spray or alcohol, and brush, leaves and homes.
Do not grab the burned or burning portion of a sparkler, as they are hot and can cause serious burns.
Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated shooter."
Dispose of used sparklers in a bucket of water or sand or on a metal tray.
Once cool, dispose of the used sparkler wires in the trash.
Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket).

Quotes
Independence Day, commonly referred to as the Fourth of July in the United States of America is the day on which America got its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Here are some famous independence quotes for inspiration.
This, then, is the state of the union: free and restless, growing and full of hope. So it was in the beginning. So it shall always be, while God is willing, and we are strong enough to keep the faith. Lyndon B. Johnson
Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. Thomas Paine
Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed - else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die. Dwight D. Eisenhower
America is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral fact - the first community in which men set out in principle to institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human equality. Adlai Stevenson
