President's Report: Strong growth in tech sectors and positive perceptions of this region as a place to live work and play continues to grow

It's hard to believe that 2014 is half over. I guess when things are happening time flies by quickly. It has been a very productive first half. A number of our primary-sector businesses are growing and moving forward with new investments in people and facilities.

The agriculture manufacturing and services sector has seen slowdowns in 2014 due to falling commodity prices and foreign issues (out of their control). These negative factors seem to be entrenched for the remaining portion of 2014 and quite possibly into 2015. The positive aspect of adjustments like these are they are shorter in duration versus deeper recessionary events like the country experienced in 2008-11

The good news is that our community continues to see strong growth in tech based products/services and is experiencing a very strong growth in entrepreneurial development. It is exciting to see the growth of companies like Intelligent InSites, Appareo Systems, Evolution1, Tech Mahindra, Myriad Mobile and others adding significant numbers of new employees.

Finding adequate workforce in certain manufacturing and professional positions continues to create some concerns but the increased awareness of Fargo on a regional and national level is starting to convince more and more perspective employees that Fargo is a great place to live, work and play!

North Dakota airport boarding continue to break records

During the month of June, North Dakota airports posted 99,658 passengers, an increase of 6.4% over last year's June numbers.

Along with this statewide increase, the Devil's Lake and Jamestown airports have recently ended a four month drought of air service. On June 5th, both communities began to offer direct jet service to Denver with SkyWest Airlines.

"For the first time in the history of our state, all eight of our commercial service airports in North Dakota now provide jet service to the flying public," says Kyle Wanner, Director of the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission, "We live in a time where air service opportunities have never been better in the state of North Dakota. It is critical that our communities have reliable air service, and it is always exciting to see continual improvements being made to our air transportation system."

CoCo, the preeminent coworking space in the Midwest announces Fargo location

CoCo announced recently that it will partner with Emerging Prairie to open a new location in Fargo, N.D.

CoCo Fargo, slated to open in early August, 2014, will be located in a 6,000 square foot space at the historic Merchants National Bank Building, 112 ½ N. Broadway. Both individual and group

memberships at CoCo Fargo are available.

This new CoCo location - the company's first outside the Twin Cities - is the result of a three-year grassroots effort by Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation

(GFMEDC), the Kilbourne Group and the founders of Emerging Prairie.

"With the continued growth of Emerging Prairie and the partnership with CoCo, the preeminent coworking space operator in the Midwest, Fargo is ready to take the next step in its entrepreneurial development. This partnership supports local business growth and sustained economic development for the

region," said GFMEDC President Jim Gartin.

As part of this ongoing partnership, CoCo will manage the space and membership, while Emerging Prairie will organize events and meetups.

"We are committed to supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem," said Greg Tehven, cofounder of Emerging Prairie. "We believe that a collaborative work space improves the work experience for people, especially entrepreneurs. Our new partnership with CoCo is an important step toward increasing innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship in the region," he said.

Although planning and construction is still underway, CoCo anticipates having enough space to serve at least 100 members, including dedicated space for individuals and small startups. In

addition, the space will be reconfigurable to allow for events. CoCo Fargo members will have access to all CoCo locations.

For CoCo, expansion to Fargo is part of a strategy to connect entrepreneurs and innovators across the region.

"We're honored to be invited to Fargo," said CoCo CEO Kyle Coolbroth. "There's an extraordinary level of enthusiasm and commitment in this city. Our goal is to actively support all those who want to build new businesses and help Fargo grow," he said.

Fargo Startup House opens with a one-of-a-kind model to support and accelerate startups

Fargo Startup House, 721 9th Street North, Fargo (in the Cathedral District), is a brand new initiative that will bring six world-class tech entrepreneurs to Fargo to live and work together as they build innovation-focused businesses.

Fargo Startup House will provide participants with access to nationally recognized mentors, professional services, investors, and business leaders.

Selected participants from across the globe, or across the street, will be given all that the Fargo Startup House offers, including room and board, at no cost other than a commitment to live and work on their businesses full time during their participation in the program.

The approximate five-week application process began July 2 and ends July 31st. The first class of startup participants is expected to move in to the house on September 1, 2014. Participants will be selected based on their talent and skills, as well as on the expected impact their business will have on the world. The program will include an initial residency of six months that can be extended for an additional six month if adequate progress is demonstrated. Fargo Startup House is partnering with international creative firm, Misfit, Inc., to reach a global audience in the application process.

"The Fargo Startup House is an attempt to accelerate both the number of early-stage, fast growth, innovation driven startups based in Fargo-Moorhead, and the pace at which those startups can succeed in having an impact on the world," said Miguel Danielson, Founder, Fargo Startup House.

The Fargo Startup House stands as the latest in a series of developments toward cultivating and strengthening the region's startup community.

"This opportunity represents one of the first accelerator-type concepts in the Fargo Moorhead region. Coupled with the recent coworking announcement by CoCo and other entrepreneurial endeavors, the Fargo Moorhead region is positioning itself as the epicenter for nascent technology development in the Great Plains," said Jim Gartin, GFMEDC President.

Fargo Startup House will feature gigabit, fiber-optic internet service to the house, one of the only examples of private, non-corporate residential fiber optic internet service in North America. Working with partners such as 702 Communications, Fargo Startup House will provide cutting-edge technology resources to resident entrepreneurs.

Valley Prosperity Partnership, working groups take quick action

Immediately following the May 14th unveiling of the Valley Prosperity Partnership's strategic plan - An Action Agenda for Sustained Prosperity - three working groups came together to start putting the strategy into action. Three working groups, which have formed to focus on talent, water, and research, began discussing the region's most promising prospects and best next steps.

Water

Water is among the greatest challenges that communities and businesses face in the 21st century. A recent national survey found that 80 percent of U.S. companies report that water availability has become an issue for their business. The VPP working group, focused on ensuring water security and management, has moved swiftly to lend its support to water supply and flood protection projects that will benefit the entire region to enable the attraction and retention of businesses in need of quality, affordable water.

Research

Research is now an essential ingredient for success in an innovation-driven, global economy. The research enterprise at the Valley's research institutions - North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota - has made considerable strides in the last decade. The VPP working group on expanding research capacity and relevancy is focused on several crucial pillars of the research enterprise, including adequate and dependable resources, a talented and scholarly science and technology workforce, and world-class research in the Valley's emerging areas of specialization, e.g. precision agriculture, unmanned aircraft systems.

Workforce

Talent availability is an issue that touches every industry sector in the Valley and throughout the nation. The VPP working group on attracting, developing and retaining talent is looking for ways that the region can work together to ensure the Valley can meet and sustain current and future employment demands. Initiatives that have been discussed as having high potential include bolstering efforts to recruit college and university students, creating greater awareness of trade and STEM programs in the Valley, making more internship opportunities available, and piloting a program to attract foreign immigrants with skills that are needed in the region.

According to Delore Zimmerman, President of Praxis Strategy Group, the consulting firm that is facilitating the working groups, they "have moved decisively to prioritize specific steps for building on the Valley's current economic momentum. A common theme has emerged amongst the groups: the future looks bright - now it is up to us to seize the opportunities that are in front of us. "

The mission of the GFMEDC is to grow and diversify the economy in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. through the attraction, retention and expansion of primary-sector employers.

A primary-sector company is one that brings new wealth into the community through the sale of its goods and services outside the trade area.  This new wealth circulates and supports all other sectors of the local economy, thus making the primary sector the principle driver of economic growth.

Thank you for your continued support of the Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC and economic development.  We look forward to your feedback.
