President's Report: Community must come together to answer workforce challenges

Workforce, workforce, workforce, we are approaching a type of critical mass in our region; it is a good challenge but if left unresolved it could be our communities Achille's Heel! The lack of certain highly trained manufacturing workers and the lack of highly educated and experienced technology and financial professionals is causing a drain on growth in our community.

The August ND Jobs Services numbers shows that Cass County has 22% of all the available  job openings in ND. ND has 21,911 and Cass County has 4,862; couple this with Clay County's approximate 1,100 job openings and there are almost 6,000 open positions in the region.

As we move forward, it will be critical for the business and educational communities to work closely together to provide a pipeline of workforce that will ensure our region's continued success. The EDC has committed staff and resources and is working hard on establishing a collaborative coalition of community partners to focus on workforce development issues and establishing action points.

If we are going to be prepared to compete, on a global basis, the FM area needs to work together. We need to break down silos from the past and focus, as a single source, on providing the training and education business needs to succeed.

U.S. Customs moves into new facility in Fargo

The U.S. Customs office in Fargo has moved into a new facility located on the North General Aviation Ramp adjacent to Fargo Jet Center.

"Relocating the Customs office to the North General Aviation Ramp improves the service experience for many of our international customers," says Fargo Jet Center Vice President of Marketing, Darren Hall.  Prior to the move, foreign nationals had to clear customs at a facility more than a mile from our FBO location thus requiring all of our services to be provided remotely.  The new U.S. Customs office is located less than 100 yards from our passenger terminal, which allows everything to happen in one location giving passengers and crews access to our facilities," adds Hall.

U.S. Customs is available 24/7 in Fargo, ND. The new 3,603 sq. ft. facility has been designed using U.S. Customs guidelines and will be equipped with the latest technology for expediting U.S. Customs clearances.

"We have worked together with our airport authority for more than a decade to promote Fargo as a preferred location for both clearing U.S. Customs and utilizing our FBO services.  Our international business has grown significantly over that time," says Hall.

The mission of the GFMEDC is to grow and diversify the economy in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. through the attraction, retention and expansion of primary-sector employers.

A primary-sector company is one that brings new wealth into the community through the sale of its goods and services outside the trade area.  This new wealth circulates and supports all other sectors of the local economy, thus making the primary sector the principle driver of economic growth.

Thank you for your continued support of the Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC and economic development.  We look forward to your feedback.
