President's Report: April - a month to remember in Fargo Moorhead
It's over, really it's finally over, the snow has melted, and we've even hit 90-degree temps! When I arrived here last March, everyone told me that the winter of 2012 was very mild and not to expect more of the same next year. OK, I get it now, Fargo can have some long, windy, cold, snowy winters, YIKES!
The good news is that everything the Fargo Moorhead area has to offer and all the exciting things that are going on makes the weather outside seem insignificant. Think about it, several weeks ago, in a five day period Fargo/Moorhead had the following world class events.
Thursday, April 25, 2013 - GFMEDC Annual Meeting, Speaker: former Sen Kent Conrad*
Thursday, Friday, April 25-26, 2013 - Cultivate.you: An exciting two day program put on by Arthur Ventures for their investment partners, culminating in a public event on Friday morning filling the Fargo theater. Rich Karlgaard, Publisher of Forbes Magazine, and Mike Cannon-Brookes, CEO of Atlassian (an Australian tech company) and Doug Burgum provided presentations on their companies, business culture and general business conditions.
Saturday, April 27, 2013 - Concordia College welcomed Bill Gates and hosted numerous events and dedications at the new Offutt School of Business culminating in a standing-room-only event at the Memorial Auditorium. Mr Gates answered student questions and chatted with Concordia College President, William Craft!
Sunday and Monday, April 28-29, 2013 - Midwest Mobile Summit, presented by Myriad Devices, a two day, deep dive on how community and business can utilize phone applications in all aspects of their operations.
These events drew hundreds of people to the Fargo Moorhead area from all over the country and each event would have been significant on its own, but as a whole, it continues to showcase our region as an dynamic technology hub with a exciting present and a much brighter future!
* Steve Sydness, Executive Advisor of Endurance International Group filled in for Senator Conrad who was ill. |
Valley Prosperity Partnership Research Phase Well Underway

Officials with Wadley Donovan, Growth Tech are researching and gathering
information to develop a comprehensive strategy for the entire Red River Valley in both North Dakota and Minnesota.

The initiative was started with a $100,000 investment from Forum Communications Company Chairman, William C. Marcil. Close to 30 business, education and economic development leaders have invested in the process and make up a steering committee to lead the effort.
Leading the initiative are steering committee co-chairs Tammy Miller, CEO of Border States Electric in Fargo, and Steve Burian, CEO of AE2S in Grand Forks. The GFMEDC and the Grand Forks Regional Economic Development Corporation are also an integral part of the process. |

Airline travel in North Dakota is up more than 10% from last year's record-breaking numbers. Williston currently leads the state in growth, boarding two and half times the number of passengers compared to April 2012. Fargo, Grand Forks, Bismarck and Williston airports all had their highest April boardings on record.
United and Delta Airlines are scheduled to start servicing Dickinson in June. Bismarck, Dickinson, Williston, and Minot are all being serviced by four airlines, and Fargo has five airlines for travelers to choose from.
North Dakotans can now fly directly to Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Orlando, Dallas/Ft Worth, and Los Angeles.
"The state is making good use of its 89 airports, and now is a perfect time to invest in aviation infrastructure," says Larry Taborsky, Director of the Aeronautics Commission. "Our office anticipates the numbers to continue to increase, especially with increased capacity coming this summer." |

The mission of the GFMEDC is to grow and diversify the economy in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. through the attraction, retention and expansion of primary-sector employers.
A primary-sector company is one that brings new wealth into the community through the sale of its goods and services outside the trade area. This new wealth circulates and supports all other sectors of the local economy, thus making the primary sector the principle driver of economic growth.
Thank you for your continued support of the Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC and economic development. We look forward to your feedback.
