Valley Prosperity Partnership meets, research underway

Early employer survey results indicate higher than average loyalty and work ethic among Red River Valley employees, Bill Fredrick, president of Wadley-Donovan GrowthTech, told the Valley Prosperity Partnership (VPP) steering Committee at its meeting April 8. Fredrick stressed to the committee the employer survey is one piece of the research they are completing.

A survey will also be distributed by the end of April to high school and post-secondary students to establish a benchmark of their perceptions and employment interests in the Valley.

Fredrick and Mark Waterhouse spent four days in the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks region interviewing employers, city leaders, and entrepreneurs, and higher education leaders. They will be conducting interviews in the Fargo-Moorhead area in May.

Committee members stressed to consultants the importance of incorporating feedback from a cross-section of companies; weighing perceptions of life-long residents versus those who moved into the region from elsewhere; and ensuring the research being conducted is correlating with the VPP's objective.

The VPP was launched in February 2013, spurred by William C. Marcil, chairman of Forum Communications Company, to identify strategic economic opportunities in the Red River Valley region of North Dakota and Minnesota. The initiative will focus on workforce development, job creation, infrastructure, and economic needs of the region.

Through its strategic planning efforts, the VPP will identify collaborative, actionable economic development initiatives that can be implemented within five years.

West Fargo STEM Center students win national app design competition

A team of middle school students from the West Fargo STEM Center are winners of a national competition to develop mobile applications that address a need or problem in their community. Their "Recycle Bin" app concept is one of 10 winning designs. The app makes it easier to recycle, and to find recycling facilities in a community.

The competition, the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, was created by the Verizon Foundation in partnership with the Technology Student Association to help boost student engagement and interest in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab will continue to work with the West Fargo STEM Center "Recycle Bin" app team to refine their projects. Verizon will provide the teams with professional support and training to help bring their concepts to market. The final products will be made available for download from Google's Play Store.

In addition, the West Fargo STEM Center will receive a $10,000 Verizon Foundation grant to advance STEM education at their school, and each team member will receive the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, courtesy of Samsung Mobile.

"It's clear that technology can get kids excited about learning, and it was great to see the care and thoughtfulness these students put into developing a solution to a problem," said Seamus Hyland, president - Great Plains Region, Verizon Wireless. "We were impressed by their creativity, their ability to collaborate as teams, and their interest in developing a mobile app."

Michelle Weber, principal at West Fargo STEM Center said, "This was a fun and relevant project for our students. It allowed them to use their 21st academics, extra-curricular activities or service to our community. West Fargo STEM Center would like to thank Verizon and those who helped bring this opportunity to our students."

More than 500 student teams from across the country submitted concepts for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. The Recycle Bin team consisted of nine students and was guided by Mrs. Gretchen Peterson.

The mission of the GFMEDC is to grow and diversify the economy in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. through the attraction, retention and expansion of primary-sector employers.

A primary-sector company is one that brings new wealth into the community through the sale of its goods and services outside the trade area.  This new wealth circulates and supports all other sectors of the local economy, thus making the primary sector the principle driver of economic growth.

Thank you for your continued support of the Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC and economic development.  We look forward to your feedback.
