President's Report:
High Priorities - Workforce Attraction and Flood Diversion

2013 is starting off stronger than 2012, through our primary sector call program we are learning about increased investments for expansions and capital equipment. With the elections behind us and the first phase of the fiscal cliff being resolved, it appears that companies are moving forward with projects that had been put on hold during the last half of 2012.

These indicators coupled with our declining unemployment rates are creating continued shortages of highly trained and educated workforce. This issue is the single most important issue facing the region, to ensure continued growth in all sectors, it is incumbent to have the necessary trained workforce to meet our businesses demands

A number of our corporate headquarters and technology-sector companies are showing the strongest growth patterns. Our manufacturing-sector companies are showing increases in productivity, mainly through automation and process improvements, which luckily will not place huge additional strain on the current lack of available workforce.

Our most critical issue, in the region, is the decision our State Legislators are currently reviewing regarding the continued financial support of the Fargo Diversion Project. Long-term flood protection for the region's businesses is critical to our continued growth and prosperity as we compete in an ever stronger regional, US and world economy!

Regional Business Leaders Shape Plan for Valley's Economic Future

Leaders up and down the Red River Valley have come together to invest $500,000 to secure the region's economic future.

The Valley Prosperity Partnership (VPP) has been formed to identify strategic economic opportunities to bring the Red River Valley region of North Dakota and Minnesota together to focus on workforce, job creation, social infrastructure and the economic needs of the region.

The initiative was started with a $100,000 investment from Forum Communications Company Chairman, William C. Marcil. More than 20 business, education and economic development leaders make up a steering committee to lead the effort. The VPP promises to deliver a comprehensive strategic plan for the region.

"Through this initiative, the Valley's private sector will build a roadmap for our region's economic prosperity," Marcil said, "and identify actions we can take to augment the resources of our great research universities."

Leading the initiative are steering committee co-chairs Tammy Miller, CEO of Border States Electric in Fargo, and Steve Burian, CEO of AE2S in Grand Forks.

The addition of an American Airlines flight between Fargo and Dallas/Fort Worth creates better access to both national and international destinations. Better connectivity allows

companies to do business more efficiently. It also makes the metro a more attractive location to locate a business.

The added service proved to be a popular option for travelers. "As soon as we announced that  the service was available for booking, Fargo was the number one booked route of the new routes we were flying." Dale Morris, American Airlines.

According to Morris, a direct flight to Seoul, South Korea from Dallas is expected to begin in May.

The Dallas/Fort Worth connection will be offered daily. DFW is the largest of American's five domestic hubs offering more than 740 departures to nearly 170 cities in Asia, Europe, North America and South America. American Airlines also connects Fargo to Chicago.

The mission of the GFMEDC is to grow and diversify the economy in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. through the attraction, retention and expansion of primary-sector employers.

A primary-sector company is one that brings new wealth into the community through the sale of its goods and services outside the trade area.  This new wealth circulates and supports all other sectors of the local economy, thus making the primary sector the principle driver of economic growth.

Thank you for your continued support of the Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC and economic development.  We look forward to your feedback.
