Roman Era Pottery Shop Found in Western Galilee
According to a recent Israel Antiquities Authority press release excavations in the Northern Galilee region of Israel have yielded a 1600-year-old pottery workshop. The ancient Roman-era kiln unearthed is unique in that it was hewn completely from bedrock, whereas most kilns found have been built of stone, earth, and mud. Excavation Director, Joppe Gosker, stated the kiln was used to make two types of storage jars, one being the large-handled storage jars known as amphorae which were used for wine and oil export, and the other storage jars, which were used locally.
