Huge Subterranean City Found in Cappadocia Region of Turkey

A massive underground city found beneath a Byzantine-era hilltop castle in Nevsehir, may have housed as many as 20,000 people. It rivals the size of Derinkuyu - the largest excavated underground city in Cappadocia prior to this new discovery.
Construction workers demolishing homes surrounding the castle discovered entrances to a network of tunnels which led scientists to discover a multilevel settlement of living spaces, kitchens, wineries, chapels, staircases, and bezirhane-linseed presses for producing lamp oil to light the underground city. Grindstones, stone crosses, ceramics and other artifacts indicate the city was in use from the Byzantine era through the Ottoman conquest.
In the first century the apostle Paul traveled widely throughout the regions of Cappadocia. Mentioned twice in the bible, the region was amongst the earliest areas of Christian activity. By the fourth century, during Constantine's reign, Christianity became the dominant religion in the Roman Empire. The bishops in Cappadocia were among the most influential figures in shaping the contours of early Christian theology. Read article by National Geographic.
