Testimonials

I want to thank you for how wonderfully our small tour group was treated by everyone from Coral Tours.  You have an amazing company, and I must compliment you on your tremendous staff and family.  I've been to Israel several times now, and this was by far the best touring trip I've been on.  We were treated as if we were family, and we greatly appreciate it. Guy Leibovitz is a superb guide, and we thoroughly enjoyed having him.  Amir was just an amazing driver, too, and the overall experience was a fantastic one.  You are doing a marvelous job, and I will spread the word about Coral Tours as much as I can.

Bet Guvrin - Maresha National Park

The Bet Guvrin - Maresha National Park in Israel encompasses over 1200 acres of rolling hills in Judean Lowlands. At about 1000 feet above sea level, the hills consist of soft limestone covered by harder rock called nari. For thousands of years people

have carved the rock beneath the nari into quarries, burial caves, storerooms, and dovecotes.

The ancient cities of Maresha and Bet Guvrin lie within the National Park boundaries and afford visitors many amazing sites to visit. Some of the must-see caves include the bell caves, which were quarried in the shape of a bell, the maze cave that has a structure of over 30 interconnected caves, and the largest Columbarium in Israel with over 2000 niches for raising dove. The impressive Sidonian burial caves dating from the Hellenistic period are located at the foot of Tel Maresha and feature reconstructed wall paintings. There is also a Roman Amphitheater originally built for gladiator fights. Visitors can see the seat of the ruler, the arena and the area where the wild animals would appear.

During the Roman and Byzantine periods Bet Guvrin had a large Jewish population. Under Roman rule, it was granted the status of a "city of freeman." Bet Guvrin thrived until the Bar Kokhba revolt in 132-135 BC. According to Josephus Flavius, it was conquered by the Roman general Vespasian.

Silver Scrolls
Ketef Hinnom Silver Amulets

The Ketef Hinnom Silver Amulets are silver scrolls containing biblical text discovered in Jerusalem during a dig directed by archaeologist Gabriel Barkay back in 1979. They are considered to be one of the greatest biblical finds of all time on display at the Israel Museum.

Barkay was interested in activity outside the walls of the ancient city where quarrying, gardening, burials, military gatherings and such occurred. He chose the hill (Ketef Hinnom) where St. Andrews Church is located and with a meager budget and 12-13 year olds as assistants he began digging.

Excavating next to the church the group discovered an ancient Christian church and burial graves. The graves, all with collapsed roofs, had been looted. Underneath one of the burial benches was a small nook, after a cursory search nothing was found. Barkay needed to have the dirt accumulated in the nook cleaned out to take a photograph for his excavation report. He selected a young man named Nathan for the task who had been a bit of a nuisance - repeatedly tugging on Barkay's shirt (thinking this would keep him busy and out of his hair no doubt). Well, as the story goes, Nathan meticulously cleaned the nook, became bored and started banging away at the stone bottom of the nook with a hammer. It broke, revealing an entryway to a secret chamber filled with ancient artifacts and skeletal remains dating back to the early 6th Century BC.

Among the many objects discovered were two tiny rolled up scrolls made of silver. Both British and German experts in ancient artifacts restoration refused to work on the scrolls for fear they would be destroyed. For several years their contents remained a mystery until Israeli technicians developed a process which allowed the scrolls to be unrolled. Both scrolls contain the oldest copies ever found of the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-26: "May Yahweh bless you and keep you; May Yahweh cause his face to Shine upon you and grant you Peace."

The amulet scrolls contain the oldest mention of the name of Yahweh outside of the Bible and are older than the Dead Sea Scrolls by more than 400 years.
