Seal Discovered from First Temple Period
In its continuing excavations of the drainage channel beneath Robinson's Arch in the Archaeological Garden adjacent to the Temple Mount, The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), has uncovered a Hebrew seal dating back to the First Temple period.
According to a statement released by IAA, the seal "is made of a semi-precious stone and is engraved with the name of its owner: 'Lematanyahu Ben Ho...' ('למתניהובןהו...' meaning: 'Belonging to Matanyahu Ben Ho...'). The rest of the inscription is erased." The seal was found on the floor of the ruins of a building also dating to the end of the First Temple period; a building that IAA said was the closest one to the First Temple found so far in excavations.
Seals were used during the First Temple period by individuals to sign letters and were often set in a signet ring.
According to Eli Shukron, the excavation director, "the name Matanyahu, like the name Netanyahu, means giving to God. These names are mentioned several times in the Bible. They are typical of the names in the Kingdom of Judah in latter part of the First Temple period - from the end of the eighth century BCE until the destruction of the Temple in 586 BCE.
"To find a seal from the First Temple period at the foot of the Temple Mount walls is rare and very exciting," he added. "This is a tangible greeting of sorts from a man named Matanyahu who lived here more than 2,700 years ago."

 The Upper Room Experience
The exact location of the Upper Room, mentioned in the New Testament, is not known nor is it known whether the scripture speaks of the same location in each instance. Today in Jerusalem you can visit the site traditionally held to be the "Upper Room" but it is unlikely that it preserves the actual place where Jesus ate with his disciples or the place to which the disciples went after Jesus' ascension on Mt. Olivet. Acts 1:12 says, "then they (the Apostles) returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying." Theories abound on where in Jerusalem this room might have been, some point to the lower city west of the Temple, others south of the Temple where the chief priests lived, while still other indications point to a place both near the Temple and King David's Tomb. From scripture we do know that all of the events from Acts 1:13 through 2:41 occurred in proximity of that "upper room." Later, on the day of Pentecost it says: "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place." Acts 2:1 Although we don't know for certain the room's location in Jerusalem, we do know the "Upper Room" experiences of Jesus' disciples transformed them forever as they were filled with the Holy Spirit. And while it would be cool to know the exact location the church began - we do know some very spiritual events occurred nearby the traditional site of the Upper Room in Jerusalem and even better we know Jesus; He's much closer than that. |
 Discovery Reshapes Understanding of Temple Design
A Hebrew University archeologist has discovered artifacts from a 3,000-year-old community that have created a new understanding of how the First Temple was built, the university announced on Tuesday.
Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, the Yigal Yadin Professor of Archeology at the university, displayed models of items excavated in Khirbet Qeiyafa, a fortified city in the Valley of Elah, about 30 km. southwest of Jerusalem. Read more about this in the Jerusalem Post. |
