SEARCHING
"I want to give!" Those were Dick Bittner's words to us last Sunday and they touched several people's hearts because we could tell they were from his heart. "I want to give in response to all that God has done for us in Jesus' life, ministry, death and resurrection. I want to give as a sign of standing with other disciples who share the conviction that God is at work in us and through us as we work to share the gospel message in word and deed. I want to give because of the feeling it gives me to know I am working to obey God's call in my life. I want to give because it gives me a sense of peace deep in my soul." Thanks Dick for a brief, heartfelt message about why you give.
Each year at this time we ask all the members and friends of Westminster Presbyterian Church to make a pledge toward next year's budget. This helps the session make plans for the coming year. I believe it also helps us, the people of the church, as it invites us to think about our giving and the ministry our congregation provides. What would our community and our lives be missing if Westminster was not part of it? Your gifts make ministry and mission possible through this congregation.
Mark Reynolds gave a very good presentation Sunday on the proposed budget for 2013. To meet this budget will require an increase of $20,000 in pledges/offerings. We will need to average about $240 more a year per giving household/pledge to reach this goal. This would be a $20 a month increase or about $5 a week. Of course not everyone will be able to do this, so we ask each of you to prayerfully consider what you can do. I do trust that God will continue to provide for the needs of our church as he has over the past 145 years, thanks to you and other many faithful disciples.
Next week you will receive a pledge card in the mail. You are asked to fill it out and bring it with you to worship on November 18th when we will collect and dedicate them to God. I hope you will plan to be with us for this special service of worship.
Another aspect of giving also occurred last Sunday. Dawn Ferguson, Kenny Nelson and Paula Patterson agreed to give of themselves as elders for the coming three years. They were elected unanimously. Along with them, Joyce Records, Wayne Baylor and Chris Brewer were elected to form our new Board of Deacons. They will help set the course for this new ministry. Linda Tucker and Wade Hepner were elected Trustees of the Endowment Fund. Thanks to all eight of you for giving of yourselves as leaders.
You have yet another opportunity to give. The Ottawa Ministerial Association is working with North Baptist Church to have a free Thanksgiving meal on Friday November 23 for anyone who wants to come. We are planning on serving 500 people between 3-7 pm at North Baptist Church. I volunteered that our congregation would provide a minimum of 20 pumpkin pies. Will you help me fulfill this commitment? You can do so in two ways, bake a pie or two, or make a cash donation for a pie. There will be sign-up sheet in the entryway for those who will bake pies or you can bring your donation to the office. Other churches are helping with other dishes. Hope House is furnishing the turkeys which are being cooked by North Baptist folks. This meal is a big undertaking and we are certain working together we will meet this need in our community.
Thanks for all the ways you give to the mission and ministry of our Lord! There is no better way to say thanks to God, than by giving of yourselves to serve and minister in our Lord's name.
A blessed Thanksgiving to each of you, Tim

Warm houses, the smell of baking, children laughing, people shopping, wrapping, giving, excitement, happiness, anticipation, mystery, wonder...I bet you know what I am going to write about. Yep, it's here! At the stroke of midnight on November 1st as the Halloween section of Wal Mart was transformed into Christmas, we knew it was coming. It seems to sneak up on me every year long before I'm ready to contemplate all that the season has to offer. One of the greatest joys of working in the church is seeing Christmas carried out in a truly "Christ centered" way. As we gathered this afternoon for our weekly staff meeting I was overwhelmed by all the things on the calendar that we, as a church, will be doing in the coming weeks. It only took about 2 seconds for that overwhelming feeling to become elation. Here is what we have to look forward to!!
- Sunday, November 18...the first phase of our "Stars of Light" program. Pick up a star so you can
give a gift!
- Sunday, December 2...the first Sunday of Advent. We will have a special presentation of Bibles to our 3rd (and some 4th) graders. This is always a time of celebration! These kids have spent the past couple of months learning how to use a Bible and now they will have one of their own to read, study, and learn from. Following worship our "Stars of Light" program will continue as we wrap our gifts and prepare them for delivery. After all that hard work we'll be treated to a pizza party.
- New this year (I'm very excited about this), on Sunday, December 16th at 5:00, we will have an all-church potluck dinner followed by carol singing, special music, the children presenting a Christmas pageant and the youth performing a skit.
All that and I didn't even mention the on-going every day/every week activities. Logos will continue through December 5th and Sunday School will be held every Sunday through Christmas (we'll take December 30th off).
Looking forward to the best Christmas season ever! Hope you'll join in all the festivities.

One of the things I appreciate most about our Presbyterian denomination is its connectionialism. What is connectionalism? It is the state of being connect ed, one to another, by a common cause or event. At church, we are connected by our faith, our denomination, and our weekday activities/interests (Bible studies, Sunday school classes, youth group, LOGOS, choir, bells, fellowship groups, etc.). We are also a connectional people in our everyday lives. We are connected by both our immediate and extended family systems, friendships, co-workers, neighbors, social events, even those we receive services from (banks, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.). And although it may not always be a positive interaction, we are connected by all those around us who are driving on the streets and highways we travel. In Psychology, Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), an American
Psychologist we studied in graduate school, was perhaps
best known for his theory of self-actualization. This theory basically proposes that individuals have a hierarchy of needs as shown to the right. Notice the middle section, entitled "belonging". This correlates to being connected.
From a Biblical perspective, connectedness is not only discussed, but was both exemplified and encouraged by our Lord, Jesus Christ. Not only did He walk with, eat with, teach, and even admonish those he was closest to (the Disciples), He likewise did the same with the common person. He understood the common person to their inner core; cared for and met their needs (when invited to do so); and ultimately, gave His life in place of ours. All this He did because He desired to be connected with us and us with Him. In Gen. 2:18-23, God said it was not good for man to be alone, and as a result, gave Eve to Adam as a helpmate. In Hebrews 10:25, we are admonished not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, we are to join together in worship and ministry. In Matt. 22:37-39, we are commanded to love the Lord our God, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. And in Romans 12:4-5, we are taught that the body of Christ is in need of every member in order to function effectively. Each of these verses exemplifies our interconnectedness with Jesus and with one another. He created us to be connected to each other and to be connected to Him. .... Isn't it great to be reminded that God didn't plan for us to "go it alone" in this world? Check out The Messenger....Westminster offers many opportunities to be active in the body of Christ.... BE and STAY CONNECTED! Joyce Records, Volunteer Lay Counselor |
WOMEN, have you missed the fellowship of a morning Bible study? Here's an opportunity you won't want to miss! Beginning Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 10:00-11:15 a.m. or so, we will be offering a 7 week (Introduction + 6 weeks) study on "Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy" from Kelly Minter's "The Living Room Series". This is a non-DVD study and is considerable less homework than the Beth Moore studies. Special thanks to Shirlene Taylor for agreeing to be the facilitator of this study! This group meets in the fireside room. Study books are $13 each and are available in the church office. Come join us on our journey (for any or all of the study) as we "study the virtuous character of Ruth, her unique relationship with her mother-in-law Naomi, and her blossoming love with Boaz. If you've ever felt devastated, struggled as a stranger, longed to be loved, or wept along the way, you'll find a loyal sister in Ruth." For questions, feel free to call Joyce Records (242-1824 or 418-5841) or Shirlene Taylor (242-4109). |

 WESTMINSTER DINING GROUP
Do you ever find yourself after worship looking around, seeing someone and thinking - "I wonder who that person is?" The Fellowship Committee would like to offer a way for our church family to meet and get better acquainted with others in our church family by enjoying dinner and fellowship together. We are going to start a Westminster Dining Group and we invite you to be a part of it.
The Dinner Club will meet for their first dinner together sometime during the month of February. Details will be shared later--what we are looking for now is how many people might be interested in participating and if you would like to be host a dinner or be a guest. Be thinking about this and look for a questionnaire in the bulletin that you can fill out if you are interested. If you have any questions, contact Deanna Fox, 242-6874.

Helen Cronin Celebrating 90th Birthday On November 16th Helen Cronin will be 90!! As many of you know she has gone to Texas "for the winter" to be with family. She will be visiting her brother at the time of her birthday this year, so her family and friends, not in Texas, won't be able to have a party to celebrate this momentous occasion with her. Her daughter, Jeanine Smith, suggests in a letter that we can help her celebrate by sending a card, call, or whatever type of recognition you desire to let her know that this is a special day, both to her and to you. Her address in Texas is: Helen Cronin #176, 3501 North Bentsen Palm Drive, Mission, TX 78574, Phone: 615-604-4031 |

Needed: Pak 'n Plays and Lap Top Computer
From time to time we have needs at the church that might be taken care of through things you may be getting rid of. A new safety standard for cribs was put into place last year. The new crib regulations prohibit the sale and use of drop side rail cribs in a child care center or other public venue. We have three very nice cribs in our nursery, but unfortunately, they have drop side rails. The cribs aren't used very often and they take up a lot of room in our nursery. While visiting Village Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, I noted that they had gone from full-size cribs to Pak 'n Plays. With this they solved two problems...they are safe and meet regulations and they take up far less room. The Pak 'n Plays can be stored easily and set up only if there is a need. If you happen to have a Pak 'n Play in excellent condition that you would like to donate to the church, we'd gladly take it.
The church has three cribs that we will be giving away. They are in good condition, but can no longer be used in our nursery due to regulations. If you would like one, please let Debbie know.
Second, the Preschool teachers put in a lot of hours preparing lessons here at the
church. Now that the church is fully wireless, it would be great if we could supply them with a lap top that they could access the internet from their classroom. It certainly doesn't have to be anything new or fancy. If you are thinking about an upgrade or happen to have an extra, we'll gladly take it off your hands. Thanks for your consideration. |

GIVE If you would like to make a donation to help in the recovery, you can write a check to Westminster Church designated for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and put it in the offering on Sunday or bring it to the church office. PRAY Please pray for those who have been impacted by the storm and those who are helping with emergency relief and recovery efforts. Pray that the hope of Christ will be evident in our response.

School of Nursing and Health Science
Dear Westminster Family,
During January 4-13, 2013, I will be departing on a medical mission trip to the Western Highlands of Guatemala for approximately one week. This will be my fifth trip to Guatemala - taking students and working with Dr's Juarez and Rivas. This year will be very different as my dear friend and mentor for this mission - Delia Pittman - passed away on October 21st from a sudden brain aneurysm. Our Guatemalan 'extended family' is hurting and very distressed. This journey will be especially emotional and very, very special. I would ask for strong prayer for everyone and specifically prayer for my personal strength to lead this group as well as Dee would have done.
The anthem this past Sunday, November 4 - "I Am Not Afraid" has been inspirational for me and reminds me so much of God's certainty in all things - like putting me at MNU and being chosen by Delia to be her mission partner these past years. God 'put me in this place' for a purpose, and He has given me a 'peace' and 'sense of rightness' of continuing onward in this endeavor. This year I have ten students and one other faculty sponsor plus myself. So a total of twelve of us will go south.
I so appreciate all that WPC has done for this group over the past trips, and as before, we only have the medicines, vitamins, etc that we carry down with us. We plan to provide medical treatment to the orphaned children of the region. Many of these children have never seen a doctor. The treatment will include a complete physical exam, treatment for intestinal parasites, and all other primary medical care within the capabilities of the team. We anticipate treating 300-500 children. Whatever potential further treatment/care is continued through the program with a monthly stipend that is provided for each child, i.e. dental/vision - if agreed to by the Guatemalan family and the distance is not too great to travel.
This trip is funded entirely through donations and by those going on the trip.
Every penny collected will be used to directly benefit the children of Guatemala. Any unused supplies will be left with the Nazarene missionaries in Guatemala.
I am seeking your prayers and your support for this mission trip. To financially support this project, please make checks payable to MNU (MidAmerica Nazarene University) and note "Guatemala Mission Trip" on the memo portion of your check. Please do NOT write my name anywhere on the check.
I thank you in advance for your gracious prayers and your support.
Yours in Christ,
Dawn Ferguson RN MSN

THANK YOUS . . . .
From Joyce Records, Thank You to my Westminster church family! For the many acts of kindness shown me during my recovery from knee surgery--Your prayers, cards, phone calls, concern, etc.--all have been greatly appreciated! It's a blessing to be loved by the church family!!
From Anne Ramsey, My heartfelt thanks for the caring concern during my surgery, for healing prayers of Pastor Tim (and his warm hands) for the prayers and healing hands of Bill and Wanda, for Megan who got me up and moving, for Joyce for a special visit, for all the many cards and flowers, and most of all to Gene, Marci, Kent and Bonnie who loved me even when I was "crabby". You are all precious in his sight.
From Deanna Fox, Thanks you to everyone for their thoughtfulness following my surgery. The prayers, cards, calls, visits and food were all greatly appreciated and helped the recuperation time pass faster. We are very lucky to have Sherril Unruh who so willingly and capably worked in the church office while I was gone. She does a GREAT job and we really appreciate all the hours she worked. Also volunteering in the church office was Joyce Records and Carol Gorton. The visits, prayers and support from Pastor Tim were very encouraging. Thanks to my church family for being so thoughtful and supportive!!
From Hope House - "Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to serve." I Timothy 6:18 Thank you for the $1000 donation and a truckload of food. Your members are very generous and thoughtful. Your help is greatly appreciated. God Bless
From Life Care Center -
Dear Friends, I could put together a nice list of all of the items your gift this month helped to accomplish at LifeCare. And sometimes, that is important. You need to know exactly where your funds are being used.
Yet I'm captured by the bigger picture. Your gifts do so much more than pay for this line item or that one. The truth is, every purchase we make, from the utility bill to a staff member's salary, is designed to do two things: change lives and save lives, it's that simple. And every time you send a gift our way, we become partners in one of the greatest endeavors any of us can imagine. In truth, your gifts make it possible for a mission to be accomplished. And because of this, moms, dads, and a lot of little children join me in saying , "thank you."

Thank you to all who helped make our annual Preschool Pancake Fundraiser a huge success. A special thanks goes to our kitchen crew...Captain Lee Lojka, Brandon Riffel, Brandon Jones, Jason White, Chad Caylor, Wade Hepner and Landon Thompson. Thanks to the Presbyterian Women for their generous donation of a Country Mart gift card and to the Christian Education Committee members for all the delicious toppings. Thanks also to those who attended and made donations. Through our efforts we raised $655.00. If you weren't able to attend the breakfast and would still like to contribute, please place your gifts in the offering plate with an indication that they are to help with our preschool program. With your help we are able to provide the necessary supplies and resources to offer a top-notch program while keeping the cost of preschool affordable to families. THANKS!

TASKS ACCOMPLISHED ON CHURCH WORK DAY
Many tasks inside and outside the church were accomplished on October 13th from trimming some trees, cleaning out some gutters, raking the playground mulch, pulling up flowers, putting away the hoses, to working in the basement. Those we have to thank for helping are: Bob and Kathy Reynolds, Jack Porter, Tim Soule, Ed Taylor, Cliff Burke, and Linda Tucker. Steve and Jill Thompson drained hoses and cleaned up all the flower urns. All of your time was greatly appreciated! When you see these people around church, let them know how much we appreciate their willingness to help.
