SEARCHING
In thinking back on September there were some pretty neat events that we participated in as a congregation. The month began with a wedding of one of our church/session members to a young lady who has been worshipping with us for more than a year. Congratulations to Lindsay Roecker and Aaron Nichols on their September 2 wedding ceremony on the shore of Pomona Lake. It was a fantastic evening in every way! We wish you the very best in your life together.
On September 9, church school resumed and our classrooms were once again in full use. It is nice to have a summer break and it is good to welcome everyone back. If you are not presently in a class this week would be a good time to get started.
The same day our choir once again filled the loft and led the congregation in singing and offered an anthem. New director, Janie Hainline, is on the lookout for more people to join in the singing, fun and fellowship of the choir. Join the choir and help enhance our service of worship.
During the coming school year our church will be hosting a series of concerts on Sunday afternoons. The first one was held September 16th Great Scott, aka Rev. Scott Dickinson gave a magic show that was both entertaining and spiritually uplifting. His sleight of hand made all of us ask, "How did he do that?" Humor and smiles were the order of the day and the kids crowded around him after the show to learn a thing or two about being a magician. We concluded with cookies and punch. Everyone had a good time. Our next concert will be November 11 and feature the praise band from Faith Lutheran Church.
LOGOS kicked off on Wednesday the 26 with twenty kids in attendance. Bells Choir Practice, Recreation, Bible Study and Family Dinner Time quickly filled the three hours. The theme was, Let the Games Begin and was carried out in every facet of the evening. Table decorations and table settings and table arrangement all highlighted the Olympic rings and reminded us of the spirit of peace, cooperation and fair play. Games included soccer, volleyball and target practice. See, we have lots of fun here on Wednesday evening. It's not too late to join.
The Youth walked in the CROP Walk on Sunday, September 30 and raised over $600 for fighting hunger in Ottawa and around the world. The congregation joined in that fight by sponsoring the youth in the walk and by bringing a different item each week for Hope House's Food Cupboard.
The Outreach Committee held a special Meet and Greet Reception following worship on the 30th for those who have recently visited the church to meet with Session members and staff. We had a nice turn out for this initial event. We will host these every other month this year.
Also in September Joyce Records began her work as Volunteer Lay Counselor. Joyce is assisting me with calling and care for our shut-ins. She is available for meeting with members and friends of the church. Call her or the church office to set up an appointment.
Now we are on to October. October begins with one of my favorite services of the year, World Communion Sunday. On this day more Christians come to the Lord's Table than any other day of the year. I hope you will join us as we encircle the sanctuary remembering the church is a worldwide body of believers of which we are a small but important part.
I am blessed to pastor a busy congregation and people.
Warmly, Tim

Youth Group Crop Walk
Crop Walk was founded in 1946 and their mission is to eradicate hunger and poverty and promote peace and justice among the world's most vulnerable people. Some of the money raised the youth helped rise will stay in the Ottawa community going to Hope House to help those families in our community.
Thank you to everyone who helped sponsor the Westminster Youth Group in the "Crop Walk." It was a great Sunday afternoon we had five youth that came and walked: Tyler Jones, Jazmin Davis, Marissa Kinn, Brenna Lojka, and Nikki Porter. We also had Kenny Nelson, Jack Porter, Pastor Tim, and Debbie Soule join us from the congregation. The youth raised $600 for the cause. We walked from the Old Depot Museum to Kanza Park and back to the Depot.

Whew! What a busy six weeks! It has been exciting to see our empty halls and rooms of summer come alive again with running feet, laughter, and healthy noise.
- Our Preschool filled up fast again this year and we were happy to welcome sixteen three-year-olds and twenty four-year-olds the first week of September. Teachers, Allison Thompson and Paula Patterson, are doing an excellent job working with these children.
- Sunday School and Children's Church began September 9th with a bit of a change. Three year olds through sixth grade are starting their morning in the Gathering Room (Susan's old office) where we are working on what it means to be an Olympian for God. Stop by and see the number of Olympic rings we have already added! We have a great team of dedicated teachers!
- Children's church is up and running thanks to a lot of parent volunteers. A new approach to children's church this year includes working on lessons that directly relate to the same scripture passage the adults are working on in big people's church. We are accomplishing this through the use of stories, activities, and a children's bulletin. This just might be a great source of discussion around the lunch table on Sunday afternoon. We welcome all 3-year-olds through 1st grade to this program. Additionally, we have children's bulletins for all 2nd graders on up. You can find those sitting on the front pew each Sunday to be picked up after the children's sermon.
- Logos took off last Wednesday with twenty 2nd-6th graders in attendance. "Let the Games Begin" was the first theme of the semester. Volleyball and soccer competition was fierce followed by which team could catch the most marshmallows in their mouth thrown by fellow team mates...obviously teams had to pick the person with the biggest mouth in hopes of winning. The evening ended with gold medals being given to all reminding them that we are all winners, that we are all loved, children of God.
I love it when the planning, decorating, set-up, and organizing is done and the fruits of our efforts are seen in a very real way. Ministry is taking place all week long through the various programs Westminster is offering. If your children would like to join us, there is always room for one more. Come and check it out!

From time to time we have needs at the church that might be taken care of through things you may be getting rid of. A new safety standard for cribs was put into place last year. The new crib regulations prohibit the sale and use of drop side rail cribs in a child care center or other public venue. We have three very nice cribs in our nursery, but unfortunately, they have drop side rails. The cribs aren't used very often and they take up a lot of room in our nursery. While visiting Village Presbyterian Church in Kansas City last week, I noted that they had gone from full-size cribs to Pak 'n Plays. With this they solved two problems...they are safe and meet regulations and
they take up far less room. The Pak 'n Plays can be stored easily and set up only if there is a need. If you happen to have a Pak 'n Play in excellent condition that you would like to donate to the church, we'd gladly take it. Second, the Preschool teachers put in a lot of hours preparing lessons here at the church. Now that the church is fully wireless, it would be great if we could supply them with a lap top that they could access the internet from their classroom. It certainly doesn't have to be anything new or fancy. If you are thinking about an upgrade or happen to have an extra, we'll gladly take it off your hands. Thanks for your consideration.

It's a full day on October 28th beginning with Sunday School and Worship followed by a Pancake Luncheon which is a fundraiser for our Preschool. MISSIONS
From our Missionaries in New Guinea
After a whirlwind trip to the USA to settle Micah into Spokane, Wa., we are back in PNG and settled back into dorm life. We just never dreamed we would be at the place we are right now. Only ONE child left at home. Just hard to believe.
"We are four weeks into an 8 week school term here at the school base in PNG. We have a houseful of 10 busy teenagers. We have a wonderful group of kids. Pray for us as we look to the Lord for strength and wisdom to get through the year as well as meeting the needs of each one of these kids. We also ask God for the time we need to help our son Levi with his future plans. Lots to do this year!!
As we spent a few weeks in the U.S. we were once again reminded of our Lord's continued faithfulness. As we thank the Lord we also want to thank YOU for standing behind us with all your encouragement, prayers and financial support you so generously shared with us in April We do believe this confirms to us that we are right where God wants us now and He will keep providing as long as He wants us here. We cannot find the words to fully express our thankfulness for your generosity. Please know it means a great deal to us! Thank you so so much!!"
Love, Chris, Peg and Levi Bittner
P.S. The Bittners shared in their letter how excited they were they are going to be grandparents in February!

From the Franklin County Cancer Foundation: We would like to thank you for your donation of $600 from your Mission Outreach Program. We smiled when we realized the amount! We are so grateful to have been on the receiving end of this generous amount. Mary Redeker, Memorial Volunteer
From Harvesters: Thanks to your support, Harvesters--The Community Food Network is providing more food than ever in our 32-year history. Your commitment to fighting hunger in our community means that we'll be able to continue to provide food to the more than 66,000 children, seniors and adults that are facing hunger this week. We simply could not achieve this goal without the help of our generous supporters.
Our network of more than 620 agencies is the front line in fighting hunger and together we provide food to one in eight people in our community.
Hunger is closer than you think. A neighbor, a colleague, or a friend of your child's may not know where their next meal will come from. Together with generous supporters like you, Harvesters works to meet the needs of the hungry in our community.
Thank you for joining us in our mission as we feed hungry people today and work to end hunger tomorrow. Sincerely, Karen Haren, President & CEO

A HUGE Thank You to the Heartland Summer Staff
Summer after summer, a group of young adults representing colleges from all over the Midwest, come to Heartland to give of their time to minister to kids from Missouri, Kansas and beyond. What most people get to see is the fun and excitement that they bring to the summer program. Campers leave this place feeling loved, fulfilled, having a greater sense of who God truly is and just flat out having an amazing time while here in this place and it all should be credited back to the summer staff. What most people don't see is how difficult this job truly is. We are asking young adults to give up higher paying summer jobs, quality time with their families, fun times with their friends and sometimes electricity for parts of the summer! In addition to counseling, we ask that the counselors clean, lead constant activities, help in the kitchen... the list goes on and on! We ask them to work the entire week with minimal breaks! Yet, through it all, they do this job with joy and an incredible willing spirit. Why? Because they want to share with campers what Jesus Christ has done for them in their lives. Because they want to be the example that so many people were to them during their camp experience. And because it is worth being exhausted for at the end of the summer! The 2012 Summer Staff deserves our thanks and appreciation for all they have done and what they poured into the lives of so many children and youth this summer. They served the Lord and all of us, very well. Serving together always, Heartland Center |
