SEARCHING
The Washington Monument was in the news recently; it suffered some damage in the earthquake of 2011. The majority of the damage was near the top of the monument and far above its sound foundation. In that the foundation was not harmed, the other repairs could quickly be made.
The congregation I served in Hutchinson planned an addition to the church building. When the excavation for the project began the builders found a big problem. The foundation of the old building was not sufficient to support the weight of the new addition, so a series of underground cement columns were built to reinforce the old foundation. Had we not done this work the addition could not be built. A sound foundation is key to the quality of anything we build.
A strong foundation is also critical for our lives. Upon what foundation are you building the work of your life? On what foundation rests the results of what you say, what you do, what you think and who you are? "Each builder must choose with care how to build on it [the foundation]. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ." I Corinthians 3:10b-11. Anything we do in life that does not have Jesus underneath it isn't going to last. It's that simple. That is why our Christian education programs are such an important part of our life together as a church. In these programs we build and strengthen the foundations of our lives. We teach our children and we remind one another that loving God as revealed to us in Jesus Christ and serving our neighbors in Jesus' name are the foundation of the Christian life. One of the great hymns of the church is, "The Church's One Foundation." Rev. Stan Ott, a friend and colleague of mine, suggests that we sing this hymn and insert our name where it says the church's. "Jenny's one foundation..., "David's one foundation...," "Sarah's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord..."
As September begins I encourage you to take part in at least one learning event here at church each week, be it a Sunday school class, a Bible study, LOGOS, youth group, choir or bells. This, along with regular worship and personal daily devotion, will continue to strengthen the foundation of your life as nothing else can. Look over the Christian Education brochure and decide now how you will participate. In life, as well as in construction projects, we ignore the foundation at our own risk.
Blessings as you work for a stronger foundation in your life.

August Session Highlights
The session made three important personnel decisions at this month's meeting.
Janie Kuehn Hainline was welcomed back as our Chancel Choir Director. Janie served first as Children's Choir Director and then as Chancel Choir Director for a total of 25 years of service. In 2008 Janie was married and relinquished directing, but now is excited to be back in this role. The Choir will begin singing in worship in September. Rehearsal will begin very soon.
Jessica Coen became our new Youth director at this meeting. Jessica has been involved with our young people over the past two years as Sunday school teacher and the Session's representative to the Youth Committee. We are pleased to welcome Jessica to this position.
Joyce Records was approved to begin working as a Volunteer Lay Counselor, under the direction of our pastor. Joyce has a master's degree in counseling from Emporia State and is working toward a national accreditation through Light University. Joyce will be working with Tim to lead classes, call on our shut-ins, and visit those who are sick. She will also be cataloguing our adult and youth Christian education resource materials and using her gifts to assist in our ministries of care and compassion.
Another item you may be wondering about. Has our change in worship time and not using the sanctuary during Vacation Bible School had any effect on our utility bills? Through the August billing period we have lowered our bills over last year by a little more than $2,000. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we have been working on lowering these costs.

SUNDAY SCHOOL BEGINS
The 2012 Summer Olympics have come and gone and for many of us once again we are left with a feeling of awe. London played host to over 17,000 athletes competing in 47 events from 204 different countries while over 4 billion people watched on television. Amazing! With the closing ceremonies behind us, we're excited to announce that the 2012/2013 Westminster Presbyterian Church Olympics are about to begin. With the addition of the new Gathering Room (located where Susan's office once was), our preschool, elementary and tweens will assemble each Sunday morning at 9:15 to participate in some wonderful events including: singing, memory verse learning, baptism celebrations, bell ringing, mission projects, and most importantly, a time to fellowship and be in community with one another. Each of the Olympic rings will stand for a scripture verse that together we will talk about and commit to memory. We will join other Olympians as we adopt their motto of "Faster, Higher, Stronger" in approaching our commitment and growth in the Christian faith.
Using the Bible-in-Life curriculum published by David C. Cook, with the exception of the 3rd & 4th graders, students will be thinking about three specific values: appreciation, awareness and awe/wonder. The first unit we will talk about how and why we are important to Jesus. The second unit will address the issue of how Jesus helps us, and we will conclude the fall semester talking about the creation of God's world. The 3rd and 4th graders will take part in a class entitled, "Getting to know your Bible". Upon completion of this course in December, all 3rd graders will be presented a Bible from the church as well as any 4th graders who haven't previously received one.
We are blessed to have a seasoned group of teachers. They are:
Preschool - Pre-Kindergarten: Nancy Hatfield and Patti Griffin
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Janet Huddlestun and Mary Cearfoss
3rd & 4th Grade: Debbie Soule
Tweens (5th & 6th Grade): Ray and Jennifer Daisy, Marci Ferguson, and
Melissa Hatfield
For students to receive the full benefit of our Sunday School program, it is important that they attend as often as possible. I encourage you to make every effort to have your children in Sunday School each week. While they are growing in their faith, there are wonderful opportunities for adults to do likewise. You can adopt our motto too as you continue your spiritual journey..."Faster, Higher, Stronger". I am looking forward to working with your children this year. If you have questions or concerns, give me a call.
See you on September 9th at 9:15.

Last winter the buzz around Westminster was the beginning of a new Logos program. For those of you who do not know, LOGOS is a program that nurtures youth and children in their relationship with Jesus Christ, prepares them for a life of Christian discipleship and builds Christian relationships with the entire congregation.LOGOS is a mid-week, four-part Christian nurture program, already celebrated in over 650 churches worldwide.Meeting weekly for 8-12-week sessions, young people engage in Bible study, learn worship skills (including a children's choir and bell choir), recreation, play and family time, with dinner.A registration fee for participating families makes LOGOS a self-sustaining program. We launched LOGOS this past January at Westminster.Because of its success, we are ready to gear up for another semester.Beginning September 26th and continuing through December 5th, LOGOS will meet each Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:30 for all 2nd - 6th graders with 7th - 12th graders joining us for dinner each evening.
We need two things immediately so that LOGOS can happen; your constant prayers and the calling of LOGOS volunteers. The support of the congregation is vital to the success of this ministry.Out of your love for God, our children and youth, we pray that you will consider sharing the gifts you have to make this new ministry a reality. This is a major commitment, but one in which we believe we are called by God to do.Sign-up sheets with job descriptions are posted on the boards outside of the sanctuary. Please take a moment to look the list over and begin discerning where you might be able to serve in this vital ministry to our youth.
Registration for students will begin immediately."Christian education isn't costly - it's priceless."We have worked diligently to maintain a reasonable cost for LOGOS. The cost of enrollment covers meals, curriculum, music, activity supplies and equipment. Fees are as follows:
One Child $ 45
Two Children $ 80
Three or more Children $100
Jr, Sr High and Adult Meals $ 3 per meal
No one is excluded from LOGOS because they can't pay fees. Scholarships are available if financial help is needed. All scholarships will be held in strict confidence.
The buzz is in the air again and September 26th is right around the corner. Our theme for the first night will be:"Let the games begin!"

Youth and Adult Christian Education Classes
Confirmation Class for 7th and 8th Grade Students - Are you interested in becoming a member of the church or learning what is required and expected of a church member? Then this class is for you. Pastor Tim and Shelly Lojka will be leading this class in training for all it takes to become a member of the Body of Christ. We will study scripture, a little bit of church history, worship and the sacraments, the government of the church and the responsibilities of membership. The class will meet each Sunday morning during the church school hour. Other times will be scheduled for class projects, mission outings and retreats. Anyone who is in seventh grade or above is welcome. Pentecost Sunday (May 19, 2013) is the date for Confirmation Sunday. Pastor Tim and Shelly encourage you to join them on this adventure. We will meet in the Youth Room.
Senior High Youth - Youth Director, Jessica Coen will meet with you in the Youth Room each Sunday morning for Bible Study, discussions, sharing and prayer.
Three Adult Sunday School Classes offered
Biblical Word Studies - Bill Ballinger is back for another exciting year of Bible study, class discussion, sharing and prayer. This class has been together a long time but there is room for you at the table. Biblical Word studies are the meat of the lessons with prepared handouts used for both in class work and at home study. You will need your Bible in this class so bring it along to the Fireside Room. The initial topic this Fall will focus on Paul's words to the Philippians, "Work out your own salvation..." Another highlight and drawing card to this class, are Wanda Ballinger's homemade muffins, scones and sweet breads. The Ballingers will feed your spirit and soul. Come and see. You will find a caring community of disciples and friends.
Comparative Religious Class - Shirlene Taylor and Joyce Records will be offering a Comparative Religions class, to be held in the Disciples Room. They will explore the ideas, beliefs and practices of other religions as well some Christian denominations. One of the books they'll be using is What's the Big Deal About Other Religions? With the interconnectedness of the world today, knowing more about other faith traditions is important for all of us. Here is a great opportunity to grow and be challenged.
The Beatitudes for Today - Bill Allegre will again lead a class using the book entitled The Beatitudes for Today. In this book author and pastor James Howell takes us on an engaging exploration of the Beatitudes. Howell considers each of the well-known phrases in these passages from Matthew and creatively applies Jesus' teachings to our contemporary world and Christian lives. The book is available in the office. The class will meet in the Parlor. |

VBS THANK YOU
I don't know how I could do a better job than Aaron Nichols did of sharing the highlights of VBS with you. Daniel (played by Aaron) and Ashpanaz (played by Tim) brought to life the courage Daniel had while in captivity in Babylon. Each night as the story unfolded, the kids became more intrigued, involved, and opinionated as to the struggle between serving idols or serving the one true God. It was truly an "Ah-ha" moment for us adults as one by one we heard kids claiming they would risk the chance of being eaten by a lion before they would succumb to not being able to pray to God. Something definitely went right in that setting.
It was exciting from the moment the lines formed to begin dinner until the last light was shut off each night. The 12 tribes of Israel, recognized by their colored headbands and matching tribal mats, traveled together to sing, play, create, listen, and worship. "Stand firm when life changes" and "Through it all, God is with us", were messages taught through songs by leaders Dawn Ferguson, Marci Gentry, and Dale Fox. Lisa Johnson, Brooke Riffel and Wade Hepner led the tribal games complete with catapult and water balloons. Tammy Gorton, Megan Bathory, and Shirlene Taylor gave opportunities for wonderful colorful creations. Each student took home a bag full of "keepers".
Most amazing to me was the final 30 minutes of the evening when all the tribes gathered in Robert's Hall to discuss and re-emphasize the message taught each evening. Yes, the noise level was a bit much, but the engagement of adults and kids was awesome to experience. As I wandered through the arms and legs and heard the insightfulness in the remarks being made, I knew kids' lives were being profoundly impacted by Westminster Presbyterian Church's VBS. That more than makes all the time, effort and money spent worthwhile.
It's difficult to know where to begin to say thank you. To all the people listed above, thank you. To our tribe leaders: Jenise Hepner, Ray Daisy, Kathy Reynolds, Karen Reynolds, Jill Ferguson, Jennifer Daisy, Nancy Hatfield, Kerstin Roberts, Kenny Nelson, Marci Ferguson...thank you. To our Preschool class tribe leaders: Gina Dearing, Paula Patterson, and Melissa Hatfield...thank you. To our photographers: Patti Griffin and Bret Ferguson...thank you. To our skit coordinator and skit participants: Deanna Fox, Dave Schwarzer, Kenny Nelson, and Jessica Coen...thank you. To our nursery attendants: Stephanie Allegre, Ashley and Chris Lloyd, Linda Tucker, Jessica Callaghan, and Chris Cahill...thank you. To our youth helpers: Brenna Lojka, Dalen Brewer, Derrek Ferguson, Braedon Brewer, Nikki Porter, Trennan Rundle, Paige Riley...thank you. To our decorating committee: Cyndi Brewer, Joanne and Dick Bittner...thank you. To our meal coordinator, Cherry Coen, and helpers: Lee Lojka, Sandy Edmonds, Bob and Kathy Reynolds, Steve and Jill Thompson, Presbyterian Women, Session Members, Fellowship Committee...thank you. To Megan Morris for ironing the transfers on t-shirts...thank you. To those who donated desserts...thank you. To those who prayed for VBS...thank you. To those who supported us with your financial donations...thank you.
To each of you named and the many others who helped in some way, on behalf of the VBS Steering Committee (Shelly Lojka, Gina Dearing, and myself), we can't thank you enough for your contributions of time and talents. Eighty-two kids were nurtured and fed, both physically and spiritually, during this week. It truly takes an entire congregation giving of themselves in every way to have a successful Vacation Bible School, and from all accounts, I think we had just that! What a terrific mission of the church...a tradition that began so long ago and continues to be a venue for impacting young lives. "Well done, you good and faithful servants!" (Matthew 25:23) Can't wait to see what VBS 2013 will bring.

From the Men's Wednesday Night Bible Study Group - we would like to express our appreciation to the congregation for the help in hosting the Stepping Up event. Christian men from the surrounding area came together to hear a simulcast message that will help the men in their Christian walk. We had a good turn out, and the food you provided was a great asset to the event.
From Hope House - "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Matthew 5:9 Thank you for the food for our pantry. The members of your congregation are very generous and thoughtful. God Bless, Hope House. |
