Soule Searching
Tim Soule
Thoughts  from our Pastor - Rev. Tim Soule

The highlight of my working life in June was the mission trip. Eight of us drove over eighteen hundred miles to, from and around New Orleans. It was a long drive but one filled with learning, service and fun. Tina Reynolds helped me lead this group of six young men on a journey we will not soon forget. We stayed in a college dorm, swam in the college pool, and worshiped in St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. We met many faithful people in New Orleans. We received a good deal of southern hospitality and we learned some things about ourselves and the ways we can serve Christ both in New Orleans and in Ottawa. Oh yes, we also worked in a food bank, a center for the mentally handicapped, at a home for teenage girls, and in a community garden. While warm and humid, the weather was not as difficult to deal with there as it has been here in Kansas since our return. We will share lots more with the congregation during our report in worship on July 29th. In the meantime you can ask Dalen Brewer, Braedon Brewer, Derrick Ferguson, Alex Reynolds, Trennon Rundle, and Tyler Jones to share a favorite story or learning from the trip. Be sure to come and hear our report on July 29th! Thanks for all your support of our mission experience, it would not have happened without the help you each gave us.

On a sad note for the youth, on June 20th, it was announced that Keith Niemeyer would no longer be our Youth Director. Keith has served in this position since January 2011. The youth will miss him at their meetings and we will miss seeing Keith and his fiancée Jessica in worship and around the church. Best wishes to Keith and Jessica for their upcoming wedding in August and for their life together.

The Personnel Committee will be putting together a process to begin a search for a new youth director. Pray for all those who will be part of this calling process, for the people who will apply to be our youth director, and for the selection of an outstanding leader for our ministry with youth. A strong youth ministry is vital for our kids and for our congregation.

In the meantime, the youth will meet regularly on Wednesday evenings this summer and on other occasions that will be announced in worship, through the newsletters and electronically.

As this newsletter is going to press, the General Assembly of the church is meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. You can get updates of the Assembly's decisions by going to www.pcusa.org .  There is always a great deal to be learned by following the assembly. There is a live streaming of the plenary sessions at this site.

Don't forget to join us this Sunday evening July 8, from 6-8 at John and Cherry Coen's for our Ice Cream Social. Need a ride? Come to the west church parking lot (Maple St.) at 5:45 and we will go together.

Now that we are six weeks into our summer 9:00 am worship service the Worship Committee and session would like to know what you think about this arrangement. Talk with one of them when you get a chance. We will not know for several months how successful we have been or not been in lowering our electrical demand charge but it would be nice to know what folks are thinking.

One last item. Many of you filled out the blue survey forms about things to do together as a church this summer. The Fellowship Committee thanks you for taking the time to complete the survey. They will meet July 8th to review the surveys and make some plans. Be alert for more happenings as the summer unfolds.

Blessings to you all.
Keep cool,
Tim

                               Congregational Meeting July 15th

A Congregational Meeting will be held in the sanctuary immediately following the 9:00 am worship service on July 15. The purpose of the meeting is to vote on proposed changes and updates to the by-laws of the church. Those changes will be mailed to each family next week so you can review them before hand.

Two major changes are being proposed. The first is to elect a three member Board of Deacons to assist the congregation with our ministry to the sick, the bereaved and those in need. The second change is to reduce the size of the session from twelve to nine members.   We will be electing the same number of leaders from the congregation but those leaders will be responsible for different tasks.

This change is being proposed partially in response to the WPW, who have been responsible for assisting families following funerals with meals and hospitality, and is asking the session to find other congregation members who will be responsible for this important task. Pastor Tim has worked with Deacons in other congregations who have found many avenues for ministry with those in need as they have worked and been faithful to this call to serve Christ and the church as Deacons.

The reduction of the size of the session is in order because we are a smaller congregation than we were five years ago and some of the tasks of the session will become the work of the Deacons. Most congregations of two hundred members have sessions of six to nine members.

Please carefully look the proposed changes over when you receive them in the mail. Bring any questions or concerns you have to the meeting and we will address them.

                                                            Memorial Preschool Mural

Rodney White was a student in our Monday-Wednesday-Friday class when he was diagnosed with cancer.  He sadly lost that battle two years ago.  After his death, his family asked if there could be a memorial to Rodney in the Preschool.

Pastor Tim and Susan Sachse met with his parents, Dana and Scott White, and his brother, Russell.  Brainstorming together, it was decided to ask Cyndi Brewer to paint a mural of the brothers as preschoolers, to be hung in the Preschool.  Dana provided a picture and The Rodney White Foundation made a donation for the memorial.

Cyndi recently finished the mural on a 4' x 4' canvas, Pastor Cliff Burke hung it in the Preschool and Susan met with the Whites for them to have a private viewing before anyone else saw it.  They were very touched by Cyndi's painting of their children and very appreciative to Westminster Church for the memorial.

Thank you to everyone who had a part in seeing this project through.  Please stop by and see the lovely addition to our Preschool (which can be seen through the windows if the preschool is locked).

                                                          Christian Education News

Four months ago I wrote a letter to the Personnel Committee that included a paragraph that said something like this:  It is with excitement and anticipation that I submit my letter of application for the position of Christian Educator/Preschool Director. I believe I am uniquely qualified for this position due to the combination of skills and experience that I possess. I am a certified teacher, a life-long Presbyterian, a pastor's kid, a preacher's wife, and a Christian with a passion and desire to use my talents and abilities within the church. I don't know if those were the words that got me an interview and after two months the job, but truly in those few words it tells a lot about me.

My work resume is long. I started delivering newspapers in 3rd grade, cashiered for a little Ma and Pa store during junior high, Saturdays during 10th grade I worked at a local funeral home, and finished out high school and college summers working as a bookkeeper at a large Christian Bookstore in Tacoma, WA. The list goes on and on...secretary; volleyball, softball, tennis coach; babysitter; physical education, math, computer, history, media, mentor teacher; Learning Center Director; legal assistant; Information Specialist; etc., etc. My mother always began every phone call with, "What job are you doing this week?" I love variety. I love change. I love challenge.

But, of all the jobs I have had, my most fulfilling has been that of Christian Education Director. I have no formal education that has prepared me for this job. My qualifications have strictly come from that of being a life-long Presbyterian, serving in many and various ways...Youth leader, piano player, VBS director, nursery attendant, janitor, Sunday School teacher, Bible study leader, secretary, choir member, Elder, Lay leader, Logos worship team, mission trips, driver, children's choir director, Lenten lunch speaker, and probably a few others that I've forgotten. While in Hutchinson I officially was hired and worked as their Director of Children and Family Ministries, beginning in 2006 and continuing until we moved to Ottawa in 2010. I truly felt a sense of call and was reassured of that calling through the wonderful people I was privileged to work with.

The last two years I have worked as an English as a Second Language Instructor for USD 290. While the children I worked with were delightful and won my heart, I felt like something was missing. Discerning God's will and plan for our lives is never easy. As I sit in my office this afternoon writing this article, once again I am reminded that God has gone before me, preparing the way. In three short weeks I feel refreshed, energized and eager to take on this new role that I am so passionate about and one in which I can use my talents and abilities here at Westminster. I thank you for this opportunity. I thank you for trusting me with your children and programs. I look forward to working along side you as we pursue new opportunities and build upon the already wonderful things that are in place for our children and youth. If you have ideas or questions, stop by my office. The door is open and I welcome your input. Together we can make a difference!

                                                                      VBS Offering
Together, Lets Squash Malaria in Mali!
  VBS offering 2012
Our VBS committee has selected to give our offerings to Operation Kid-to-Kid international mission project that will provide millions of specially treated mosquito bed nets to at-risk kids in Mali with the help of World Vision.

In many countries, particularly Africa, mosquitoes carry a frightening disease called malaria that is often fatal. Malaria is one of the deadliest diseases impacting poor children around the world. The disease kills more than 2,000 children every day. About half of the world's population is at risk for malaria. Nearly 1 million people die from malaria every year.

The gift of simple mosquito nets can go a long way toward keeping children safe. Plus it's tangible evidence that someone cares for them. For every $6 donated at VBS, World Vision can purchase one bed net that will protect two or more children. These specially treated nets, draped over a child's bed while he or she sleeps, can last up to four years. The nets are powerful weapons against malaria!

We are excited to join others in this mission project. We have a goal to purchase 50 nets. If you would like to contribute toward this project, please mark your offerings accordingly and we will combine them with the kids' contributions. Thanks!

                                                     THANK YOU TO OUR CHOIRS

The Westminster Ringers and Vocal Chorus did a wonderful job of helping us celebrate the birthday of our country last Sunday. This was another in a year-long set of performances that have enhanced our worship. We are blessed to have these dedicated ringers and their gifted leader, Dale Fox, guiding us in praising God.

The same can be said of our Chancel Choir. They, too, are a dedicated group, and, like the bell choir, they are here not only on Sundays but also for an evening rehearsal each week. Ten months out of the year the choir is in the loft and helping lead our music. We have been blessed by each of them and by the good direction given by Choir Director Diane Yeamans.

Both groups will take a well deserved break for the next two months and they will return in September. Please thank the members and directors of both these choirs for sharing their musical talents with us.

During July and August we will have special groups and individuals offering their gifts of music to God in worship. If you want to bring a musical offering, talk to Tim Soule or Diane Yeamans.

Wide Lined Paper and #2 Pencils

ECKAN and Communities In Schools of Ottawa are once again partnering together to put on the Resource and Readiness Fair for families in the Franklin County area.  ECKAN has long been a provider of school supplies for children who needed them to be ready to start the school year.  For the last two years, they have expanded this opportunity to families to come to an event that allows kids to "shop" for their supplies as well as for the families to see all the opportunities available to them through services provided in the area.

Communities In Schools likes to partner with the faith community to help get these supplies for those that can use the help.  Westminster has agreed to collect #2 Pencils and Wide Lined Paper.  Please bring these items to church on Sunday morning and place them on the table in the foyer outside the sanctuary or leave them in the church office.

We appreciate your generosity and hope you will pray for the thrilled child as they pick up their pencils and paper to put in their school box.
