NEWS FROM OUR NEW CHRISTIAN EDUCATION DIRECTOR...
It is Wednesday afternoon and I am sitting in what was Susan's office looking out over the courtyard filled with an abundance of color and beauty. God's creation is certainly evident in just that small park-like setting. The last three days of training have gone so quickly and yet, the amount of information passed on is more than I can wrap my mind completely around. Susan's organization, knowledge, and attention to detail will certainly make my transition easier. I'm thankful that I will have a few quiet weeks to look through files, read notes, and become more familiar with all that goes on at Westminster through the eyes of a Christian Educator. Thanks for your patience while I learn.
More importantly today though, is to give you an update on our members carrying on the mission of the church in New Orleans. As planned, they set off at 1:00 Sunday afternoon and arrived at Loyola College dorms at 5:00 Monday evening. The drive was uneventful with the exception of car games, snacks, music, and more snacks. Orientation began at 7:00 Monday night and the two churches working together were introduced. Tim introduced our 6 young men and the pastor of the other church introduced her kids....all girls! I guess that has made for some interesting dynamics!
Rise and shine began at 6:30 on Tuesday with breakfast at 7:00 so that they could be at their work place by 8:00. They spent the morning hours working at a girls' home where they spruced up the yard, planted flowers/shrubs and weeded the stone patio area. All this was done in preparation for a special open house they were hosting. The afternoon found our team at a school/daycare for lower functioning adults. The duties varied from helping them organize their craft shop where they sell the goods they make to playing games and singing. Tim made a life-long friend when the name James Taylor was mentioned!
The late afternoon/early evening was spent touring the city and seeing some of the devastation and reconstruction. The two interns leading the program in addition to working alongside the kids also spend time in study and prayer as well as passing along some past and recent history of New Orleans.
Ten-thirty at night after a long day's work isn't the best time to get all the details. My sense though is that they are working hard, learning a lot about people and life, and enjoying their time together. Continue to pray for them as they minister and work on behalf of all of us. We'll keep you posted as more information is received.
