Soule Searching
Thoughts from our Pastor - Rev. Tim Soule
Lots of Happenings at Westminster in June
Last weekend our Relay for Life Team became a Bronze Medal winner. They collected over $3,000.00 for cancer research while having a great time together in Forest Park. Captain Craig Carlson led the team along with the able assistance of Chris and Ashley Lloyd. Pictures of the event and team members are on our Facebook page. Check it out and thanks to everyone who helped the team reach the Bronze Medal level. Great work for our first year!
Another team effort went into the retirement thank you for Susan Sachse. Deanna Fox headed the committee that carried out a simple and lovely recognition and reception for our dear friend and colleague in ministry. Nancy Baylor, Kerstin and Henry Roberts, Megan Jones and I shared in the fun of working out the details for this special lady. If you were not there you missed Megan's rendition of Hooper Humperdink told to Ms Susan and incorporating the name's of all our Sunday school kids. It was impressive. (You can see it on our web site.) The red and yellow roses and a special double chocolate cake are favorites of Susan and were enjoyed by all of us along with fruit kabobs. The congregation presented Susan with a silver butterfly bracelet and a lovely wooden jewelry box with a picture of Westminster Church etched on the top along with the verse. "I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus." 1 Corinthians 1:4. Deanna Fox shared her thoughts on the changes Susan experienced in her 27 and a half years of working here. Pastor Henry highlighted the unchanging faith that Susan exhibited through all those years. Thanks to everyone who helped and shared in the day.
On June 10th, the youth group will leave for St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans to do mission work in the city. Lift us up in prayer each day that week. Pray that we have safe travel, work hard, enjoy one another, share faifhfully with others why we are doing this work and that we return to Ottawa and share with you what the Spirit of God showed and taught us on this trip. We will return late in the night on June 17.
The Session has voted to recommend to the congregation a change in the bylaws of the Westminster Church. These changes will accomplish three things. First, it will update them to bring them in compliance with our new form of government that was adopted by the General Assembly in 2010. Second, it would establish a three person Board of Deacons for the congregation. This new board will be under the authority of the session. They would be responsible for a ministry of caring for the poor, the bereaved, the sick, and those in need. They would help in preparing and serving communion, especially with those who cannot attend worship. They will be care givers. Deacons minister on behalf of the whole congregation and are elected to serve just as elders are elected. The third thing this revision would change would be the size of the session. Session would be reduced from its current twelve members to nine. This means the nominating committee will continue to need four people a year to fill our leadership needs on both boards.
Watch for the date of the congregational meeting to address this change. A copy of the proposed changes will be mailed to each family before the meeting. Please feel free to call me and ask any questions you have about these proposals.
Even though it is summer in Ottawa, I am still searching for the lazy days of summer. Maybe next month. Oh no, that's VBS.
Fun, fun, fun,
Tim

Thank You from Susan
Dear Westminster congregation,
Sunday's retirement reception for me could not have been more perfect! Thanks to all of you who were here to say goodbye and for the awesome gifts.
The butterfly bracelet is beautiful - I love it's symbolism of Christ's resurrection; it will be long treasured and lovingly worn. The walnut jewelry box upon which Hasty awards etched a drawing of Westminster Church (graciously shared by Ramsey Printing) is gorgeous and will be a lasting reminder of my time on staff at Westminster. I will also use it to hold the lovely bracelet and cross necklace presented to me earlier by the Preschool Board.
Heartfelt thanks to those on the committee for planning and coordinating the reception to make it unique just for me. Having Marci Gentry direct the Baby Bells Choir one last time was so special! How fun was the story that Megan Jones wrote and read, naming all the children who attended Westminster while I was the Christian Education Coordinator/Preschool Director! The remembrances that Deanna Fox and Pastor Henry Roberts shared brought laughter and tears and Pastor Tim Soule's kind words were very humbling. Other committee members who decorated the tables with yellow roses tipped in red (representing my favorite Iowa State colors) and served chocolate mousse cake and fresh fruit kabobs were Nancy and Wayne Baylor and Kerstin Roberts.
Thank you for the privilege of being part of the Westminster Presbyterian Church family for so many years; you have made me feel much appreciated. May God richly bless this congregation as this era ends and a new one begins. ~ Miss Susan |

"Keeping the Love Tank Full"
Pre-wed? Newlywed? 10, 25, 50+ years of marriage (or in between)? How full is your "love tank"? Just as it's important to keep our gas tanks full in our vehicles, it's even more important to keep our "love tanks" full in our relationships! Would you like to know and be known (and even understand and be understood) by your mate on a whole new level? This four week, two-hour marriage enrichment workshop incorporates valuable tools from renown experts Gary Smalley and John Trent, Gary Chapman, Les and Leslie Parrott, and the Bible by exploring, discussing, encouraging, and even adding a little humor to the relationship we know as marriage..... And in the process, assist you in filling your "love tank".
Please join George and Joyce Records in the Fireside Room for this FREE informative workshop from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 30th-Wednesday, June 20th. You are encouraged to participate even if you cannot attend every session. Babysitting will be available, if needed. Sign-up located in the church Narthex/Foyer. For questions, call us at 242-3518. PRAY for the people impacted by these disasters and for those providing aid. Thank you for making a difference! |

Amish Grace: Based on the book: Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy. This is a powerful true story of a tragedy that takes the lives of five Amish schoolgirls in Pennsylvania and the journey of one child's mother as she faces a profound test of faith. It was the highest-rated original film to ever appear on the Lifetime Movie Network. No rating (should be suitable for teen and up)
Like Dandelion Dust: Based on the novel by Christian author Karen Kingsbury. An emotionally gripping story of the heartaches and struggles of the natural and adoptive parents of a child. Don't miss the personal adoption stories of author Karen Kingsbury and producer Kevin Downes about the children they adopted from Haiti. Rated PG-13 for Mature Theme including domestic violence and alcohol abuse. Truly moving picture and Dove Family (12+) awards |

WORK AND FELLOWSHIP BRING BEAUTIFUL RESULTS!
Twenty-two people worked together on the work day we had in May to plant flowers; mulch around the trees, shrubs, and flower beds; and rake the mulch and replace the matting in the playground. The decorative stone (limestone with a K-State wildcat) was the perfect gift for me. I will enjoy it and remember you all when I see it. Thank you all for your part in the gift and special day.
