Soule Searching
Thoughts from our Pastor - Rev. Tim Soule
A little bit about several matters of importance to the congregation.
The story is told about "Mister Rogers" (aka: Fred Rogers, did you know he was a Presbyterian pastor) addressing the National Press Club. He said that he knew that the room was filled with many of the nation's best reporters - men and women who had achieved much in their lives. Rogers took out his pocket watch and announced that he was going to keep two minutes of silence. He invited everybody in the room to remember the people from their past -parents, teachers, coaches, friends and others - who had made it possible for them to reach this point. As the seconds ticked away, he could hear, all around the room, people sniffling as they were moved by the memories of those, coaches if you will, who had made sacrifices on their behalf and who had given them countless gifts, the voice of wisdom and encouragement.
This year I will have to pause in quiet and remember my mother. I was fortunate to have her in my life for 56 years. So I am going to try Mr. Rogers' exercise on Mother's Day and remember my Mom. I will sit in silence for five to ten minutes and remember her impact on my life. Moms and those who mother/nurture us are one of God's great gifts to us. We will give thanks for moms in worship this Sunday, recognize our High School graduates, and remember some of the voices that have shaped and encouraged us on our life's journey. I hope you will join us. Attendance has been a little light since Easter. You are missed when you are not with us.
Most everyone is aware that Susan Sachse is stepping down as our Christian Educator and Preschool Director. Susan's last Sunday in this position will be June 3rd. Her last day in the office will be June 15th. To mark this occasion there will be a reception in her honor following worship on June 3, in Roberts Hall. Susan has asked us to keep this a low key event and I have promised we will do so. Still it is important to say thank you to her for a career of service and devotion to this congregation, its children and her and our Lord. So set aside this time to come and thank Susan and to wish her well as she pursues a new adventure or two. Watch the bulletin for more details.
With Susan leaving, we are fortunate to have Debbie Soule stepping in to become Children's Christian Educator and Preschool Director. Debbie will begin her work on June 11. She and Susan will spend a few days together to make this transition as smooth as possible. Debbie brings professional experience as a teacher and administrator. She is a life long church member, church volunteer and paid staff person, and for thirty plus years she has been this pastor's best friend and chief counselor. So yes I am biased, but I do believe we are blessed to have her come and serve Westminster in this capacity.
As I wrote last month a time change for worship is coming on May 27. Remember worship is at 9:00 am throughout the summer.
Blessings, Tim

SUMMER WORSHIP TIME CHANGE
Beginning Memorial Day weekend, May 27th and running through Labor Day, September 2nd, worship will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. This is one way we are trying to reduce our electrical bills. Worshipping earlier means we will cool the room when it is not as hot outside. It will also give us more time on Sundays with our families enjoying various activities.
SUNDAY BRUNCH
Sunday, May 27th
To kick off our new worship time, we are planning a brunch to following worship on Sunday, May 27th. Please join us for breakfast casserole, homemade cinnamon rolls and fruit cups. Be sure to put this date on your calendar for worship at 9:00 and brunch following. |

Christian Education/Preschool Director Hired
A search committee consisting of myself, Nancy Baylor, Janet Huddleston, Melissa Spratt and Jenise Hepner began meeting in late January to begin the search for a new Christian Education/Preschool Director. Our first task was to review and revise the job description. We were seeking an individual who had Christian education and teaching experience, and more importantly had a calling to be a Christian educator.
We began advertising in March. As we reviewed the applications it became clear that one person had all of the qualifications we were seeking. Our initial interview was March 29th. The committee was very excited about with the candidate's prior experience and new ideas for our youth programming. I met with the candidate again the following week and made an offer. Before accepting the position, the candidate felt like they needed to follow through with two other interviews that were already in progress to make sure they were making the right decision.
On Sunday, April 22nd I met with the candidate and she agreed to accept our offer. I made a recommendation to Session to approve the hire during the April 24th Session meeting and the Session approved the hire.
I am pleased to announce that Debbie Soule will be our new Christian Education/Preschool Director. Debbie will work with Susan to transition into the position in early June. Debbie will need the same support that we have given Susan over the many years of service Susan has provided to our Christian Education.
I also want to point out that our employee handbook states that employees do not report to another family member without Session approval. Session gave their approval for Debbie to report to Pastor Tim.
I want to thank those members of the search committee for all of their input and assistance during this process.
Mark Reynolds, Chair, Personnel Committee |

Scholarship Awarded
Congratulations to Elisha Carlson, daughter of Craig, who is the recipient of a Westminster Presbyterian Church $500 Scholarship. Elisha will be graduating this weekend from Ottawa High School and plans to attend Washburn University. Following is the essay Elisha wrote as part of the application process on "What Westminster has meant in my life":
Growing up, my family was split. With a divorced mom and dad and a sister that left the household at a young age, church was something I could count on to be stable for me. I'd always be happy to see the same familiar faces at Westminster, Sunday after Sunday. This gave me a sense of what support was. Having those people sitting next to you, knowing they were going through hard times like I was, helped me to realize that it was ok not to be ok. Reading in the bulletin and praying for those in need, helped me to see I had a second family I could count on that would always be there for me. People who maybe didn't even know me well would still think about me and pray for me. What a great feeling to know I belonged to a church where I was welcome and cared for; the way a family works and provides help for one another.
But when the church split, I was faced with some disappointment; how could a family of mine split in two again? Although in despair, my faith was still strong. Westminster showed me how strength can continue even in low times. The church grew in my eyes. With most of our elders staying at Westminster, I thought to myself ... elders are wise so they knew what the right decision was and I am glad I made a wise decision to stay as well. I have a little grey hair myself, so that may have helped, too! This experience helped me to realize that even if things go wrong, one must rely on their faith to get through it. And as a church we did just that.
Westminster to me means a loving church that is now strong again. To me it shows how I can get through anything and how my faith will never fail. I am glad to belong to such a church and I appreciate the love and support everyone has shown. You have given me a sense of a real family, something I'll never forget. |

Youth Time!
Thank you all so much for your generous donations for our potato bar! We raised just under 400 dollars!!! As you know, the mission trip is a little over a month away, and we are all getting very excited. We have raised quite a bit of money and could not have done so without your help. Our sub sandwich sale was delicious and helped us to raise over 500 dollars, hopefully we can do that again next year! As the date of the mission trip comes closer, we still have work to do and a couple fundraisers left. We thank you for all your support and prayers. We can't wait to get back from New Orleans and tell you all about our adventures! It's going to be a huge blessing and a great way to grow the youth group. Thanks again for all your support and just know that all your time, effort, and money is the only way we are able to serve others in New Orleans! Thank you so much, and God bless!

Best Choice Labels
Westminster Preschool recently received a check for $120 for the redemption of 3000 Best Choice labels! We received 3 cents for each of the labels ($90) plus an annual $30 donation from the company for participating.
What a great fundraiser which does not cost the Preschool anything except time to count the labels. And for that, we say thank you so much to Anne Ramsey who counted all 3000 labels, bagging them in piles of 100. Anne's help and the help of all of you who save labels for the Preschool, is very much appreciated! |
