Soule Searching
Thoughts from our Pastor - Rev. Tim Soule
I am about to meet with a couple who is planning to be married soon. Part of our conversation will be about covenants. Covenant is not a word we use everyday but it has deep roots in the Bible. Some covenants are what we call contracts, legal commitments between two or more parties. We still have all kinds of covenant/contractual agreements today. As I said, marriage is a covenant. It is a legally binding agreement between a man and woman. Certainly a good marriage is more than a contractual agreement but that is one aspect of marriage.
There are two other forms of covenants in the Bible that are not so common in our contemporary world; promissory covenants and obligation covenants. Promissory covenants have no articulated requirements for the person or people receiving the blessing. The emphasis is all on God's activity, what God does. The covenants with Noah, (Genesis 9:8-17), Abraham (Genesis 17:10-14) and David (2 Samuel 7:12-17) are examples of this type. While an obligation covenant, is a covenant in which responsibilities are assigned to those who are part of the covenantal agreement. Moses and the Israelites (Exodus 19-24) were part of an obligation covenant and were given the 10 Commandments as their responsibilities as part of the agreement. But, whether promissory or obligation, these covenants begin with an act of unexpected and undeserved grace from God. God approached the recipients and announced the divine intention to engage them in a life defining relationship. Nothing the humans did or did not do formed the foundation of the relationship. God's gracious love fashioned and maintained the agreement. Thank you, God, for initiating relationships with us.
Another important thing to remember about God's covenanting work is it creates a bond among the people who are involved in the covenant. They are to show proper respect before God and to treat one another justly and with compassion. Active love for neighbor was one way God's people had to demonstrate their loyalty to God. The covenant generated relationships. Life together is an expressed response to God's covenanting work. Thank you, God, for our life with one another.
In reflecting on God's covenant work I am reminded of what God says to us through Jesus. "I do not want you to be alone in this world. I want you be with me and to draw others into your circle as well". When we covenant with others, we are part of a relationship that is established by divine love. Thank you, God, for our church family.
God's covenantal work culminates in Jesus who says, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood." (Luke 22:20). This is the length to which God goes to be in relationship with often unfaithful human beings and to bridge the loneliness and separation that plagues so many today. This thought is just another reminder that as we approach Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter that we are totally dependent on the initiative and grace of Almighty God as made known to us in Jesus Christ.
Humbly and gratefully, Tim |

Chili Luncheon for the Youth Mission Trip!!
Sunday, March 11th
Join us right after church for lunch and fellowship
All arrangements have been made.
We need you to come and support us with
your presence and donations.
Hello, we are putting on a chili and soup luncheon this Sunday after worship. We invite everyone to stay and join us for a meal. As many of you know, we are planning on taking a mission trip to New Orleans. The camp is going to cost each youth and sponsor about $300 which covers the camp costs and food during the camp. We will be responsible for travel expenses, gas, van rental, etc., which is why we will be doing a few fundraisers. The chili luncheon will be by donation and all the money goes towards the mission trip.
We really appreciate all that the church has helped us with and we hope that you are excited for all the work and growth we are going through. In the last few months we have had one new high school youth attend and 5 new middle school youth attend. We ask that you keep our group in your prayers and help us to keep growing and spreading the good news to the youth around us. Thanks so much. Hope to see you all after church Sunday! God Bless -Keith Niemeyer

NEW PRESCHOOL TEACHER HIRED
It is with great pleasure that the Preschool Board announces the hiring of our new teacher, Paula (Hepner) Patterson. Paula has an elementary teaching degree and several years teaching experience. She is currently filling in as an assistant in our Monday-Wednesday-Friday preschool class. Paula has done an excellent job and works very well with our other teacher, Allison Thompson.
For the next school year, 2012-2013, Miss Allison has been retained as the lead teacher for the 4 years olds on Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings and the assistant on Tuesday-Thursday. Miss Paula will be the lead teacher for the 3 year olds on Tuesday-Thursday and continue as the assistant on Monday-Wednesday- Friday mornings. The Session has approved Paula's hiring.
Paula grew up in Ottawa, attending Westminster as a teenager. She and her husband, Erik, are current Westminster members and have 2 young sons, Andrew and Kale. The Preschool Board could not be more excited to welcome Paula to the staff and knows that she will be a blessing to our preschoolers and their families!

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING OFFERING
Palm Sunday, April 1st
OGHS gifts are divided among three ministries that are critical to the work of the church. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is the emergency and refugee program of the PC(USA) and responds in times of disaster, but also partners in long-term recovery. The Presbyterian Hunger Program works with Presbyterians and other partners to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes, responding with compassion and justice to poor and hungry people in communities in the United States and across the globe. Self-Development of People carries out the PC(USA)'s global commitment to support the self-development of economically poor, oppressed and disadvantaged people and facilitate long-term change in their lives and communities.
OGHS fish banks and giving calendars were given to the children during the children's sermon this past Sunday. If you would like a fish bank to collect your coins during Lent and return on Palm Sunday, you may pick one up in the church office or in the foyer at the welcome center. |

Thank you for the five bags of groceries. It will help keep the food pantry filled for those in need. Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated. God Bless, Hope House
from Presbyterian Church (USA) - "Thank you for your contribution of $300 to the Christmas Joy Offering. Half of the gifts to the offering keep faith with those who have spent their lives returning God's gifts through service to the church, and half enable students at racial ethnic schools and colleges to discern what gifts they have to offer. Clearly your congregation takes joy in praising God's love by sharing it with others. At a time when most Americans have been feeling the effects of the economic crisis, these gifts are even more important as the need of both racial ethnic students and the faithful servants of the church is always greater in time of economic stress. So especially at this time, we thank you for your continued faithfulness and generosity. May the Spirit of thanksgiving with which you gave continue to overflow abundantly within both your own lives and the life of your congregation." from Hope House: |
