Soule Searching
Tim Soule
Thoughts  from our Pastor - Rev. Tim Soule

In September of 2011, the session, at my urging, signed on with the presbytery to begin a program/journey entitled Acts 16:5Acts 16:5 is obviously a biblical text.  It says, "So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in numbers daily."  The Acts of the Apostles is the story of the growth of the church from its birth in Jerusalem and its rapid movement to reach the ends of the then known world.  It is the story of the work and power of God's Spirit set loose on the followers of Jesus.

"So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in numbers daily." Who has not hoped and prayed for that kind of spirit to be unleashed within Westminster? That has been my prayer for you, for us, from the moment I met with you and you extended me a call to be your pastor. I want us to be strengthened in faith and increase in numbers daily.

A congregation that is truly being the church brings people into a loving, life-giving relationship with God and others that is transformational. This is the nature of the kingdom of God;

where covenant relationships model the best aspects of family,

where people find hope and experience belonging,

where they extend and receive forgiveness,

where they discover a sense of purpose and direction,

where they learn to live with appreciation and joy no matter the circumstances. Such a community is and will be attractive to others on their journey.

Westminster has a solid foundation upon which to build and grow. We do, however, need to evaluate and ask questions such as, "What is the fundamental purpose of the church? What difference is this church suppose to make in the lives of its members and in its surrounding community? What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? What does it mean to be spiritual? What difference does faith and church make in someone's life? Acts 16: 5 is designed to lead us in this discussion.

The first step in this faith adventure is prayer, prayer for our church and one another.  During the season of Lent (the 40 days preceding Easter) you will be asked to sign-up to have a prayer partner here at church. Acts 16:5 has introduced us to a simple covenant of prayer. In the next couple of weeks we will share how we each can participate.

Another piece of the program is Word/Share/Prayer; a brief, Bible study, sharing and prayer time that I will introduce to you during Lent. I hope we will have several groups who will meet at various times to study, share and pray for themselves and for the church.

You, the people of the church, are our greatest asset. When we study, share and pray we ready ourselves for the transforming spirit to work though us. Please become someone's prayer partner and join a Word/Share/Prayer group for Lent.

Yours to be strengthened in our faith and to increase in numbers daily, Tim

                                                   Homebound Cookie Visitation

Westminster Women are once again putting together wonderful baskets of cookies and fruit to deliver to our homebound members.  This year our mid high youth will be making the visits and delivering the baskets of goodies on Sunday afternoon, February 12th.
Thank you to everyone who signed up this past Sunday for donations.  Cookies and fruit should be brought Sunday morning, February 12th and left in the church kitchen.  Please mark for homebound visitation so these goodies do not get mixed in with the fellowship goodies for that day!

NEW Women's Bible Studies

PRESCHOOL NEWS

Westminster Cooperative Preschool is now enrolling from the public for the 2012-2013 school year (Westminster members and children previously enrolled at Westminster Preschool had first preference for enrollment until January 31st). The class of 3 year olds on Tuesday-Thursday mornings is currently full and a waiting list has begun. There are a few openings in the 4 year old class which meets on Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings. If you know of children who will be 4 years old by August 31st, please pass this information to their families and have them contact Susan Sachse, Preschool Director.

The Preschool Board is accepting applications for a Lead Teacher for the Tuesday-Thursday class and assistant in the Monday-Wednesday-Friday class. Applications with staff qualifications noted are available in the church office and will be accepted through Friday, February 24th. Interviews for the position will be held in March. The Preschool Board hopes to have a new teacher chosen by the 1st of April.

FR. CO. CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE

Join the Westminster Church Relay For Life team.  We are looking for people who are interested in being a part of our team and/or making a donation.  The event is June 1st beginning at 7:00 in Forest Park.  Money raised from this event goes to help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Teams of people will be camping out at Forest Park and taking turns walking or running around the track.  Each team has a representative on the track at all times during the event.  Because cancer never sleeps, the relay is overnight.  Food, games and activities provide entertainment and a great time.

No matter who you are, there's a place for you at Relay. Each dollar raised will help save lives. How far will you go to make a difference in the fight against cancer?

Call Craig Carlson, (418-8772) team captain, if you would like to join our team.

                                      ITEMS MISSING FROM THE KITCHEN

The punch bowl and ladle are missing from the kitchen.  If you know where they might be, please return them to the kitchen or call LaWanda Gorton, 242-4735.

Items can be borrowed from the kitchen, but please write on the sign out sheet located on the pantry door your name, date, and what you are borrowing.  When returning that item, cross your name out.

                                                 2012 PER CAPITA APPORTIONMENT
The 2012 per capita apportionment is $33.70 for each active church member. With 219 active members, Westminster's total per capita apportionment is almost $7400. Everyone who can help with their portion ($33.70) assists the church in upholding a big responsibility. Per capita money is used to do the administrative work of the denomination at the presbytery, synod, and General Assembly levels. Per capita is not mission money. It funds the infrastructure that makes the church's mission efforts affective, efficient and strong.   If you can assist Westminster with all or a portion of your per capita apportionment, just designate "per capita" on your check or giving envelope. Your per capita can be included in the check with your contribution--indicate the break down of the total amount on the bottom left corner of your check or on your giving envelope.

                                         HOPE HOUSE UPDATE

In January, Hope House served 289 households which included 582 adults and 363 children.  They could use help in the following ways:

--building shelving and rearranging their freezers

--picking up food orders from Country Mart (requires heavy lifting)

--someone who loves to write thank you notes

--volunteers to fill in when they are short-handed

--prayer - as volunteers serve, for their clients and thanksgiving for the community and church support.

Please do not leave donated goods on their front steps.  This almost always results in the donations being ruined.  Call a volunteer to meet you and let you in.

Cleaning Supplies Needed:  paper towels, bleach, all purpose disinfectant and disinfecting wipes.

WESTMINSTER CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT

Each year leaders of the various groups of the church are asked to write a report of what their committee or group has done that year.  It's always amazing to read these reports and realize all that has happened in the life of Westminster Church in one year.  If you have not received a copy of the annual report, copies are available on the Welcome Center or in the church office.
Many, many hours are spent proofing, duplicating and copying each of the reports.  A great big thank you goes to Sherril Unruh, who worked many days in the church office helping with the reports.  Aaron Nichols designed the cover of the report which gives a great, colorful overview of our year in pictures.  Ramsey Printing printed the cover and stapled the booklets.  Those helping assemble the reports were:  Mary Cearfoss, Fred Searls, Sherril Unruh and Kerstin Roberts.  Thanks to everyone who helped!

STARS OF LIGHT - PROVIDED CHRISTMAS JOY

MISSION THANK YOUS...

From Hope House,

"Giving is a true measure of love."  Thank you for the food donation and your very generous gift of $1,698 Christmas offering and Mission Christmas offering.  Your gifts help keep the food pantry filled this winter and help provide utilitiy assistance to folks in our community who are in need.  Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated.

From Havesters,

Thank you for your support this holiday season!  Because of friends like you, David, a working single father of two small children, will be able to provide his family with a warm, happy holiday meal.   Your support enables the more than 620 agencies in Harvesters network to help parents like David provide meals for their families.  Your generosity and support has made a lasting difference in the lives of families, seniors and children in our community.  You have provided more than just food--you have given them hope and sustenance.  Thank you for helping us feed hungry people today as we work to end hunger tomorrow.  Karen Haren, President & PEO

From Midland Care Hospice,

Thank you!  Your recent contribution of $600 to Midland Care Connection will help greatly in allowing us to continue to provide care to everyone, regardless of their inability to pay.  Your funds may be used to purchase medications, provide equipment, or sometimes even to supply basics such as food and personal items.  This past year Midland provided service and care to over 2,500 clients and their families.  Thank you for your care and support.  Jennifer Friedley, Director of Development

SUMMER CHURCH CAMP

At 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 26th, a representative from our Presbyterian Heartland Church Camp at Parkville, MO will be in Roberts Hall to speak to our children and youth about the camp. 2nd graders - high school youth will be dismissed from Sunday School early that day to attend the presentation. Any parents that would like to hear his message are also welcome to attend.

Westminster youth are extremely blessed that HALF their camp fee can be paid from Westminster Endowment funds. To receive a scholarship for half the camp fee, youth should submit a copy of their camp confirmation to Susan or the church office no later than Monday, April 30th. (On the camp registration, there is a spot to indicate that the church will be paying half the fee). The camp scholarships will be paid directly to Heartland Presbyterian Camp.

                                                                                 Youth Time!

Well, we thank everyone for allowing us to assist in youth Sunday and lead in worship. We really appreciated all the support and compliments from you all!

For anyone who has not heard, we are planning a mission trip to New Orleans!!!! This is still in the planning process as to how we are getting there, but we are all excited for this opportunity and hope that you are all excited for us as well. It's going to be a long trip and pretty far away from home, but we know God is going to use us in great ways that we will be able to come back and talk to everyone about. Our trip is going to be from June 11th to June 17th. Depending on how we get down there, we may be leaving a little earlier but we will keep you informed as that time comes.

We will be doing some fund rising as the mission trip comes closer and hope that you will enjoy some of the activities that we have planned. We thank everyone for the donations during the soup luncheon; we raised almost 300 dollars, and were blessed by your support. Currently we have 10 youth interested in this trip and several adult sponsors. This is amazing, but also requires that we raise some money through fund raisers.

The first fund raiser we are doing is a huge bake sale. We will have items for church members to buy after worship on Feb. 26th, but we will also need some help baking food. Any unsold baked goods will be taken to Wal-Mart and we will set up a bake sale there. I will have a signup for anyone willing to help us bake and hopefully this will be a fun and easy fundraiser.

In March, we are going to have a chili/soup cook-off. This will be held after church on March 11th. All we ask is that you prepare your favorite chili or soup to be judged by the rest of the church. The youth will be helping with clean up and helping judge.

Thanks so much for all of your time and support. Keep an eye out for all the fun and exciting things that we have planned in the near future. This is a huge undertaking, but we know that with Gods help and guidance anything is possible. God Bless.  -  Keith Niemeyer, Youth Director

Rodney's dream was to help other kids.  Please consider donating blood to help Rodney's Dream come true.  Make an appointment to donate blood on Saturday, February 25th.  To schedule an appointment online go to www.esavealifenow.org and use Sponsor Code rodneywhite.  You may also contact Allen Durbin at 785-893-1930.
The Blood Center must collect at least 580 donations each weekday to meet patient needs in our 70-county region.  Your support would be very much appreciated.
