      100th BIRTHDAY PARTY CELEBRATION!!

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH

for

MELDA CUTTING

You are invited to the birthday party for Melda following worship this Sunday.  Melda is the second eldest member of our church family and will be celebrating her birthday on Sunday, February 5th.   We are planning a "big birthday bash" to honor her "100 years" on this earth!

A photo display and a short program highlighting some of her life experiences will be presented. There will be lots of cake and ice cream, so have a hearty breakfast that day and plan to be at this very special event.

Melda actively participates in conversation and loves that fellowship. She has limited sight due to macular degeneration. Please join us in Roberts Hall directly following worship. A basket will be provided for cards.  Your presence is the only gift desired.

Homebound "Cookie" Visitation

For many, many years, Presbyterian Women have prepared baskets of goodies which the youth have delivered to Westminster homebound members. Traditionally the 3rd, 4th & 5th graders made these deliveries during Youth Club on Wednesday afternoons around the Valentine holiday.

There is not time in the new LOGOS schedule to carry on that tradition so this year the Middle School youth will be making the deliveries on Sunday afternoon, February 12th. Those youth took part in visiting the homebound while they were in elementary school so it should be lots of fun for them to return to visit with some of their favorite Westminster seniors!

There will be a sign up in the foyer this coming Sunday, February 5th, for Westminster members to donate cookies and fruit. This is the only week to sign up so please stop by the poster and let Presbyterian Women know what you'll be able to bring.

Cookies and fruit should be brought Sunday, February 12th and left in the church kitchen. Please mark for homebound visitation so that these goodies do not get mixed in with the fellowship goodies for that day!

  souper bowl

                                 FROM PASTOR TIM

A simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat" is inspiring a youth-led movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world.

This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern serving at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, gave birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy? Youth could collect donations at their schools and churches in soup pots, and then send every dollar DIRECTLY to a local charity of THEIR choice.

That was 1990. Since then, ordinary young people have generated an extraordinary $81 million for soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in communities across the country. In addition, hundreds of thousands of youth have experienced for themselves the joy and satisfaction of giving and serving, inspiring people of all ages to follow their generous example.

You can participate this week in the Souper Bowl of Caring at Westminster. Our youth will be collecting money and canned soups to be shared right here in Ottawa. Each worshipper is encouraged to give one dollar or one can of soup. The collection will be taken following worship this Sunday, February 5th. The youth will be near the sanctuary exits to receive your donations.   Help make this a "souper day" for our community.
