ANNOUNCEMENT FROM SUSAN
When I was hired as a staff member at Westminster, I had no expectations that the job would become a lifetime career where I would spend 27½ years! The position started at 10 hours a week and as the church membership grew and activities were added, so did my position. Another few hours were added here and there or a staff member resigned so I took on those responsibilities to where I now average 30 hours/week.
Through that all, I have had a wonderful career at Westminster. My husband and I were married at Westminster, our sons were baptized and confirmed at Westminster and the congregation has truly been our extended family. I feel your love and support on a daily basis!
So making this announcement to all of you is very difficult for me and I do so through tears, tears and more tears. I have decided to retire in June. I can not imagine my life without Westminster Church. Yet there is a season for everything and I truly feel the Spirit telling me that my season as a staff member has come to an end.
Our congregation has weathered a horrific storm and yet, here we are today on the verge of wonderful happenings. I am excited to see the plans that God has for Westminster and the person He will choose to replace me to see those plans to fruition.
I cannot thank all of you enough for the ways you have embraced me throughout the years. What an honor and privilege it has been to work with you. As you know, a large part of my job is asking for volunteers and over and over and over again, you all have come through and said "yes" whenever I asked for help. Nothing I accomplished at Westminster would have been possible without you. I have been tremendously blessed by working side by side with each of you as well as your prayers, kinds words and always, your support. I dearly love all of you! Susan |

Soule Searching
Thoughts from our Pastor - Rev. Tim Soule
The word is out. Susan Sachse is retiring at the end of this school year. Of course no one believes Susan is anywhere near retirement age, but even so she informed the session last Sunday that she will finish her work with us in early June. Certainly that makes us all very sad for us, but I hope we can be happy for Susan. After twenty-eight years of service to Westminster Church and the only director Westminster Cooperative Preschool has ever had, and that preschool has been operating for over twenty years, five days a week, nine months a year, Susan deserves to sleep in, or leave town, or play hooky for a while. She also deserves to go to church and not worry about who is leading Children's Church, or if there are enough busy bags for every child, is the nursery fully staffed, are all the teachers here, is the heat on, are the doors unlocked, is the coffee made and are the lights on. That's a lot to do while trying to praise God and pray for all the children she has had in her care over these twenty-eight years. Susan deserves a break from calling teachers, getting curriculum chosen, being a last minute substitute, not to mention overseeing Youth Club, hanging the Stars of Light, administering VBS, and probably a dozen other tasks I have no idea she has seen to over the years. And just think, she said when this job started it was ten hours a week, done from a make-shift office in the basement. I can't think about all the things she does for us but I do know above all the things she does do for us and with us she supports us in all our efforts to serve Christ and loves as we try. Oh my goodness we do not know how much we will miss her. We do know that we love her very much and we wish her the very best in whatever new endeavor God has planned for her. Well done Susan! But before Susan goes we have at least one more exciting program about to expand. Youth Club, will return on January 25, as LOGOS. The new format will include, recreation, bell ringing, Bible study and a Family Dinner Time. LOGOS is for students 2nd through 8th grades. It will begin at 3:00 and concludes at 6:30 for 2nd-5th grades and for middle school it begins at 5:30 and concludes at 7:30 each Wednesday for eight consecutive weeks. Drop by and see what we are up to. You will want to stay and get involved. You will hear lots more as we move into the spring. As we begin this new year there are many reasons to be optimistic about our future as a congregation. Did you see all those children up front on Sunday? Do you see new faces in the congregation? Do you feel a good and hopeful spirit as you come in the doors? I do and I get excited, even as we make changes and say some good-byes, God is at work among us and has lots for us to do in 2012. I am certain of that and look forward to the year that lies ahead. There's a song of hope in my heart, Tim |
The next Messenger will be published Feburary 2nd, 2012. Please have all articles in writing to the church office by 9:00 a.m., Monday, January 30th. |

The Chancel Choir is honored to have been asked to sing at this year's Martin Luther King Jr. service at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 15th at the Ottawa University Chapel. All are invited.

PRESCHOOL NEWS
This week the Preschool Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Angela Sylvester as the teacher aide in our 4 year old class effective January 23rd and as the lead teacher of the 3 year old class at the end of the school year. Angela's husband and family are owners of Sylvester Ranch who recently had a fulltime employee quit unexpectedly. Thus Angie's services are needed in the family business. This is such a loss for our Preschool as Miss Angie has been a faithful teacher for 8 years. She will be greatly missed but we wish all the best to Angie and her family.
The Preschool Board feels very fortunate that they were able to quickly fill Miss Angie's aide position on Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings. Paula (Hepner) Patterson has been hired as the teacher's aide to work with Miss Allison. Paula has an education degree with experience teaching at many grade levels, including kindergarten. The Board expects that she'll be a great addition to the Preschool staff and warmly welcomes her!
The Preschool Board will soon begin the process of hiring a permanent lead teacher for the 3 year old class for the 2012-2013 school year. |
THREE BAPTISMS ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 8TH
Congratulations to the Landon Thompson family on their baptisms this past Sunday, January 8th. Allison, Landon's wife, and their two children - Ava, 6 years old and Layton, almost 4 years old, were baptized during a special service during our worship time. Allison is our Monday- Wednesday-Friday preschool teacher. Landon is the son of Steve and Jill Thompson. |
INQUIRER'S CLASS
Are you interested in learning more about Westminster Presbyterian Church, its history, mission, beliefs, its worship, sacraments and ministry, its governance and structure? Ever wonder what is a Presbyterian or how you can become a member of this church? Then join our pastor, Tim Soule, as he leads a 3-week Inquirers Class. He will attempt to answer these questions and any others you bring. Everyone is welcome-those who are not members, those who joined in the last few years, and those who have been members for a long time. The class will be held on Sundays, January 15th and 22nd at 9:15 a.m. in our Christian Education Office--adjacent to the church office. At the conclusion of the class, there will be an opportunity to join our congregation. A nursery will be provided.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of the members of Westminster Church and others who have been attending church but are not members. If you have any questions about this class, please call the church office, 242-1824. |
PLEDGE UPDATE
We thank you for all your gifts to our congregation! We have received 76 pledges totaling $242,956. Those pledges include many "new" pledges, and many who increased their pledge over last year. It is not too late to turn in a pledge. Please complete a pledge card and mail or bring it to the church office. Pledge cards are available on the table in the back of the sanctuary or in the church office. Receiving pledges helps the finance committee to more accurately figure the budget for 2012. |
CHRISTMAS OFFERING
Contributions received on Christmas Eve for our special offering totaled $1,396.00. Our offering was divided between Hope House and the Westminster Love Fund which is used to help with utilities and other needs of our church family.
Thank you so much for your generous gifts to this special offering. |
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS
Contribution statements for 2011 financial giving will be mailed next week. Please check your statement over and if you have any questions, call Deanna, 242-1824. |

LOGOS REGISTRATION
Join the excitement at Westminster as we embark on a new youth program this spring. LOGOS for 2nd - 8th graders will begin on January 25th and continue for 8 weeks, through March 14th. Registration will take place before and after worship this coming Sunday, January 15th. All youth must be registered to attend LOGOS. They may even invite their friends to come with them; just be sure the friends plan to attend the entire 8-week session and that their parents fill out the registration papers and pay the tuition.
LOGOS tuition is a little higher than our youth are used to paying for Youth Club (because dinner is included); however, the expense should not keep any youth from participating. Scholarships have been requested from the Westminster congregation to make it possible for all youth to participate. (Indicate on your family's registration form if a scholarship is requested; the information is confidential to only Susan and Pastor Tim.) If you are interested in sponsoring scholarships for LOGOS, please let Susan or Pastor Tim know.
LOGOS TABLE PARENTS NEEDED
One of the exciting components of LOGOS is the dinner hour. Each week 5 youth (mixed ages) will be assigned to a table with 2 adults. This becomes their LOGOS family. The adults will help teach table manners, help them learn to serve the food and clean the table, have conversation with the kids about their interests and activities and then participate in a pre-planned group activity.
Table parents only responsibility is to make a commitment to be here 8 Wednesdays from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. All the planning and meals are being prepared by others. If you are available during that time period, your help would be greatly appreciated! See Susan or Pastor Tim to volunteer.
LOGOS SCHOLARSHIPS NEEDED
Would you like to help jump start the new LOGOS youth program at Westminster but are unavailable to help on Wednesday afternoons and evenings? Then perhaps you would like to help by sponsoring scholarships so that finances do not keep any youth from participating. LOGOS tuition is $40 for one child in the family, $75 for two kids from the same family and $100 per family with 3 or more youth.
LOGOS ASSISTANTS NEEDED
Would you like to come be part of our new LOGOS youth program but are unable to commit to 8 Wednesdays? Volunteers are needed for short shifts each week and do not need to be the same adult each week (as do table parents). See Susan if you could volunteer for any of these shifts (there is someone in charge of each of these activities; you will be assisting them).
3:00 - 3:30 transport youth from school/supervise snack and/or homework
3:30 - 4:00 help with craft and/or recreation
4:00 - 4:30 assist during music time as the youth learn to play chimes and handbells
4:30 - 5:30 help set up for dinner and prepare meal
5:30 - 6:30 help serve meal and kitchen clean up
You can choose any of these weeks to help: January 25th; February 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, or March 7th, 14th. |
NEW WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY
Did you make a resolution to become involved in a Bible study in 2012? Then you'll be pleased to know plans are being made to offer the new Beth Moore women's Bible study, James, starting in February. There will be 2 different sessions: Tuesday mornings at 9:00 a.m., led by Shirlene Taylor and Monday evening, 5:30 p.m., led by Kathy Reynolds. Watch the Messenger for details! |
Don't let your worries get the best of you; Remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

SUNDAY SCHOOL OFFERING
The Sunday School offering from fall semester has been designated for our new youth LOGOS program. Thanks to the children, youth and adults for faithfully giving each week, the total offering collected from September - December was $731.57. This amount will be such a great help with the start up costs associated with LOGOS!
Spring Sunday School offering will be donated to the Youth for their summer Mission Trip. |
2012 PER CAPITA APPORTIONMENT
The 2012 per capita apportionment is $33.70 for each active church member. With 219 active members, Westminster's total per capita apportionment is almost $7400. Everyone who can help with their portion ($33.70) assists the church in upholding a big responsibility. Per capita money is used to do the administrative work of the denomination at the presbytery, synod, and General Assembly levels. Per capita is not mission money. It funds the infrastructure that makes the church's mission efforts affective, efficient and strong. If you can assist Westminster with all or a portion of your per capita apportionment, just designate "per capita" on your check or giving envelope. Your per capita can be included in the check with your contribution--indicate the break down of the total amount on the bottom left corner of your check or on your giving envelope. |
CARE NOTES - for you and/or a friend
Care notes are small pamphlets written to support individuals or families as they face difficult situations. They are easy reading but provide specific responses that bring comfort, direction, and hope. They are found in a special rack outside Roberts Hall. Please feel free to take one--they need not be returned.

For all the hats, mittens, socks and scarves...
Your generous contributions to our Hat and Mitten tree completely covered the tree and some were placed beneath the tree. 81 hats, 105 pairs of gloves and mittens, 5 scarves and headbands, and 20 pairs of socks were given to Lincoln School and Hope House. Thank you so much for responding and providing warmth to those who are in need of warm clothes.
Fred Searls has been a frequent visitor to the church office over the last few weeks. Many thanks to Fred for coming to the church several times a week to sign checks, answer the telephone, or do whatever else is needed. The time he gives is very much appreciated.
From Carol Gorton and family, We would like to thank everyone for the telephone calls, cards, prayers and concerns expressed to our family in the last few months. You have provided a lot of support to us during a very difficult time. The Family of Don Gorton |
From Tim and Debbie Soule....
Dear Westminster members and friends, Debbie and I want to thank you for the Love Gift that was presented to us on Christmas Eve. We feel blessed and honored to live and work and minister with you here in Ottawa. Thanks, too, for all the ways you support us in our work here. May 2012 be our best year yet.
We have many blessings for which to be thankful and a great many hopes to make our future strong and good. Of course our greatest gift and hope is in Christ who promises to be with us forever. Wishing everyone Christ's peace and blessing in the New Year. Warmly, Tim and Debbie
From Charlene Duncan (resident of ORV Plaza),
Thank you so much for sending Dale Fox with the unusual poinsettia plant. I have enjoyed it along with others talking about how unusual a color it is.
Thank you to Brett and Jessica Callaghan for their contribution of a new camera to use in the sanctuary to record our worship service so it may be accessed on our web site. Several people have mentioned viewing the worship service on the web site when they are unable to worship in the sanctuary with us. Louise Harrell and her family viewed the worship service Christmas Eve from the hospital in Lawrence. Pastor Tim checked up on us the Sunday he was in Colorado. Some members have mentioned that their children that live out of town have been viewing the worship service. Bill Ballinger has appreciated being able to view the worship service since his surgery in December. Thank you so much Brett and Jessica! |
CHRISTMAS GOODY SACKS
What fun it was Christmas Eve for those children and youth in attendance to receive a bag of candy, nuts and fruits after the service! Thank you so much to the 3 Westminster "Santa's" who donated the goodies and their 3 Westminster "elves" who filled the bags.
This is such a great Westminster tradition and we are so appreciative of the generosity of these anonymous donors! |
NURSERY VOLUNTEERS
We are blessed with wonderful staff in our church nursery, Judy Brunner and Trish Davidson. They are here each week to provide such tender loving care to our little ones.
Occasionally, however, they are gone and then we have a wonderful group of substitutes who fill in for them. Thank you so much to Jennifer Daisy, Allison Thompson and Sherril Unruh for the times they fill in for the nursery staff.
We are especially grateful to Sherril for serving in the nursery both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so that all the parents of our young children could enjoy the worship services with their families! We are extremely grateful for all these lovely ladies! |

All about Westminster Youth
Our youth program events and happenings |
| YOUTH TIME!
Well we made it through the holidays and we had a blast. For those that followed our recent activities, we embarked on a church lock-in. On December 29th, we had 28 Ottawa youth attend. We had several of our own youth members attend, as well as their friends. During the lock-in we played games, had a Bible study, fun group activities, movies, games, and lots and lots of snacks and pop. I cannot thank you all enough for your generous donations. Between the snacks, pop, baked goods, and financial gifts, you all made it possible for us to have a very successful night. Again, thanks for all your help, and just know your donations were greatly appreciated and used well.
Next on our calendar, we are preparing for youth Sunday, which will be the last Sunday of this month. We will have several youth members helping out and sharing their talents during the service. We are also getting close to finalizing a mission trip, so keep us in your prayers as we start raising money and getting things worked out.
Again, I can't thank you all enough for all the help you have given me. I could not do this on my own and am so blessed to be a part of this church. Thanks for your help and prayers.
