Huge congratulations to William Huxhold who has retired from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after a very distinguished career.
Bill is the only individual who has been president of both URISA (1984-85) and UCGIS (2000) and has been a deserving recipient of every URISA award including being inducted into URISA's GIS Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in the development of GIS professional certification.
In honor of his accomplishments, the Mayor of the City of Milwaukee declared May 21, 2015 to be William Huxhold Day. View the Mayor's proclamation here. Congratulations!!

Free GIS-Pro & NWGIS Conference Attendance for Students!
Did you know that the White House hosted a Mapathon last week? Shoreh Elhami, cofounder of URISA's GISCorps, and Cy Smith, past president of URISA, were both in attendance.
A portion of the event was broadcast (view here). Megan Smith (U.S. CTO) addressed the enthusiastic crowd, which was a highlight.
Shoreh summarized her experience: The first White House Mapathon was a great opportunity for non profits and governmental entities to share ideas and demonstrate the power and value of open data and crowd sourcing. I had the opportunity to meet many colleagues including the Geographer of the United States (GOTUS), Lee Schwartz, who said it best: "Maps are the best vehicle to present open data."
Cy noted: ...a great interest by the folks I spoke with (DJ Patil, Deputy Chief Technology Officer, Cori Zarek, Senior Advisor to the CTO, Open Government, Mikel Maron, Presidential Fellow and Mapathon Organizer, and Denice Ross, Presidential Fellow with Dept. of Energy) in data sharing between government agencies, verifying crowd-sourced data in the U.S. through authorized government workflows, and S.740 (the Geospatial Data Act of 2015).
