Discerning God's Guidance In Our Lives

Our Vestry recently went on a retreat. We met at the St. Katharine Drexel Mission Center. Our facilitator, Father Tom Pumphrey of St. David's Church, Radnor, helped us to get better acquainted and to tell our stories of faith. We spent time together in prayer. We also discussed All Saints' Church in depth: our history, our current situation, our hopes and dreams, and our challenges and problems. All in all, it was an enjoyable and valuable experience.

I am proud of our Vestry. Over the past several months I have been impressed by how we work together and reach a point of consensus, at times agreeing to disagree on issues, but at all times uniting together in support of our decisions. At the center of this is our conviction that we are the spiritual leaders of the congregation and those who are called to discern God's guidance for our parish as we move forward. This cannot happen effectively without prayer.

Martin Luther, writing in the 1500s, remarked, "I have so much to do today that I will spend twice as much time in prayer." Prayer, fundamentally, is about entering into a relationship with God. Usually we think prayer is about asking God for help or a favor, and that is part of it. But it is also about praising God, asking questions, saying we're sorry, expressing sadness or anger, and searching for direction or correction. We additionally need to listen, putting ourselves on the receiving end. One practice I've found inspiring is to spend a certain amount of time each day in quiet seclusion without distractions, sometimes for only a few minutes, trying to be open to what God might have to say to me. While God is capable of communicating in an unlimited number of ways, it helps to create an atmosphere in our lives that makes room for God. I believe our Vestry did this during our retreat and will continue to do so as we work together.

How is your prayer life? Do you make time for it? Is it a priority? If we are to have quality relationships with our loved ones, we need to make time for togetherness. We need to create an atmosphere, intentionally reach out, and communicate through expression and listening. It is the same way with God. I believe God has a will and purpose for each of us, and the only way to discern or discover it is through this relationship known as prayer.

I also believe God has a will and purpose for All Saints' Church. As our Vestry members meet together and do our work, we will prayerfully discern the nature of God's guidance for our congregation. In the process, we will need your prayers and support as well.

Do you feel God guiding you in your life, or do you wish you did? As in the familiar hymn What A Friend We Have In Jesus, "Take it to the Lord in prayer." As always, if you would like to talk about it, I would love to meet with you.

May the companionship of God be your guide this month and all the days of your life.

typewriter  Vestry Update - May 2013

Your Vestry has been very active lately! Last month we approved a change to the By-laws of All Saints that lengthens the time span between the maximum consecutive six year term for a Vestry member, from one year to three years. In other words, after someone has served two consecutive three-year terms, they would not be eligible to serve on the Vestry again until three years have passed. It is our hope that this change will provide opportunities for congregation members who haven't yet served, to offer their time and talents to a Vestry ministry.

Also, at a workshop in February under Fr. Brad's guidance, we have adopted a committee structure to the Vestry. These are the committees discussed and assigned to Vestry members at the February 3rd workshop. The Vestry members who are liaisons to each committee are identified. Please note that a chair and liaison do not have to be one and the same person. Each committee could have as its chair someone who is not a Vestry member.

Finance

Jim Lee, Finance Warden, is the acting chair/liaison of this committee until a permanent one is in place. This committee addresses the current financial situation of the parish and Day School.

Worship & Music

Kathie Hayes is chair/liaison. This committee focuses on the music and worship practices of the parish and acts as a council of advice to the Rector and music staff.

Welcoming & Membership

Alan Martin is chair/liaison. This committee focuses on welcoming visitors, reaching out to potential members, and helping to ensure that new members are fully incorporated into the life of the parish. Committee members ideally represent each service: 5:30, 8:00 and 10:00.

Communications & Marketing

Vickie Gorbe is chair/liaison. All facets of communication and advertising fall under this umbrella, including bulletins, newsletter, website and Facebook pages, articles in newspapers or stories or ads on radio etc. Also announcements and material posted on bulletin boards.

Outreach

Nora Perry is the chair/liaison. The ministries that benefit those in need within our community, Diocese, and the world are the focus of this committee. Examples are food shelves, soup kitchens, Episcopal Relief and Development, United Thank Offering, assistance to missions and mission trips or sponsorships with sister congregations.

Day School

Barbara Johnson is the chair/liaison. This committee, when formed, would be the Board of Directors for the Day School. In the meantime, it meets regularly with the Day School staff. Not an open committee, School Board members only.

Property & Cemetery

Dave Thomas and Robert Morck are co-chairs/liaisons. This committee will oversee and conduct the work of the parish's buildings and grounds and the cemetery.

The Property & Cemetery committee includes a Sub-committee for the cemetery, focused on the historical treasures within it. They are hoping to resurrect history lesson tours of the cemetery.

Christian Formation

Maggie McKinney is chair/liaison. All the education ministries of the parish fall under this committee: nursery, Sunday school, youth group, adult education, confirmation etc. Any staff and volunteers involved in these ministries would be part of the committee.

Activities & Parish Life

Tom Showler is chair/liaison, although this is not so much a committee as it is a conduit of communication between parish groups and the Vestry. The Chair meets or otherwise communicates with representatives of groups such as ECW, Men's Group, Christmas Bazaar, Breakfast Club, annual picnic, Young at Heart, Cub Scouts etc., and reports on their activities and plans to the Vestry. The Chair also relays any requests or other information between these groups and the Vestry.

Stewardship & Endowment

Jude Winters is the chair/liaison. The ministry and spirituality of Stewardship is the year-round focus of this committee, including stewardship awareness and education, the annual pledge drive, continued support for the endowments of the parish, wills and planned giving strategies etc.

Please consider sharing your time, talents, expertise, interest, or curiousity about one or more of these Vestry ministries. Since these are volunteer opportunities, there are no term limits, you may serve as long or as short a time as you are able. We on the Vestry are all looking forward to working on our ministries as members of a team, taking full advantage of the myriad gifts of everyone at All Saints' and sharing in fellowship. You are welcome to serve on more than one committee. Please let us know if you are interested by emailing the Vestry liaison for the committee and copying Fr. Brad and I in your email. unos
Thank You
Uno Dough-raisers!

Thank you to all of those that were able to make it to our Uno's Dough-raiser on Tuesday, 04/16. We're quite sure between Gene Thompson and Adge Martin's orders, as well as a number of other diner's we are off to a great start for our Christmas Bazaar fund-raising.  Rumor has it that the Hoffman Family, Doris Horrel, JoAnne Tempest, Jean Rosania, the Ryan & Dooley families, Doris & Maryellen DeRitis, as well as Michelle & Robert Haberle were all sighted. I suspect it was the DeWitt Family, McKinney & Rodgers Family, Klak and Ramberg families, and the Jarosz Clan that may have caused the kitchen to almost run out of food! Almost...that is. Stay tuned...they'll try better next time!
Cemetery & Ash Memorial Guidelines Reminder

Some of you may have already received a letter we recently sent to those who have loved ones interred in our church yard cementery and memorial garden. We appreciate the desire to honor our deceased loved ones, but gently remind all parishoners all decorative items must be temporal in nature and within our published guidelines. Thank you for understanding that this letter comes with our sincere desire to keep All Saints' Cemetery a clean and orderly place of reverence for all. For the full content of both letter and guidelines, please follow the attached link. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the church office. - Brad+

Feeding the Hungry
at St. Mark's
Saturday, May 18th

All Saints' is welcomed once more the afternoon Saturday, May 18th to help Feed the Hungry at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Each guest will be served a hot meal, and given a packed brown bag lunch with homemade sandwich, snack, and fruit to take with them before departing. If you'd like to join us, volunteers should meet in Friendship Hall at 9 a.m. to help prepare by making sandwiches and packing lunches. Interested in helping but unable to join us? Any monetary donations are welcome (and appreciated!) to help with purchasing of the food and items needed - please be sure to mark 'St. Marks' on any intended donations!
Well Wishes & Prayers
1st. Lt. John F. Rush Jr.

All Saints' has a history of those that have honorably served our country, and such a tradition continues as Rosalee Rush's nephew 1st Lt. John F. Rush Jr. is scheduled for deployment to Afghanistan for the third time (this time as an adviser). John will be over there a year - please keep John, his wife Jenifer, and their sons in your prayers please that he comes back safely when his tour is finished. John's return from Afghanistan  after sixteen years in the service will bring him the honorable title of Captain upon tour completion. Hurry home John - you're in our prayers!

Kudos to our Property  Committee members Dave Thomas and Bob Morck for their work in All Saints' being awarded a grant for storm water runoff assistance from the City of Philadelphia. This will certainly be a extra savings for us on our water bill!

A heartfelt thanks from the coffee hour crew for all of the items, cakes, cookies, coffee and treats provided during Friendship Hour - every little bit helps and your efforts do not go unnoticed. Thank you!

Warmest congratulations and best wishes to Richard Coogan IV and Jennifer Hicks on their wedding at All Saints' on April 13th!

Congratulations to Liam and Aiden Schiavo on their

baptism at All Saints' and to their parents, Christina and Bill, on the blessing of their marriage on April 14th.

Has anyone seen Bill Hilt about? No? It seems Bill fell a week or two ago and managed to break some ribs and bang up his knees in the process. Feel free to send some sunshine his way by giving him a ring or sending him a card! It might be a great opportunity to send some sunshine Joan Kelly's way...our hearts are with her, as she works on getting hers back up to speed. Please feel better both of you!

Also missing in action is Earl Schoen who fell the week before last hurting both his shoulder and breaking his hip. Ouch! Lot's of broken bones in these parts this month! Earl is working hard at getting back into the swing of things at rehab - hurry back, we miss you Earl!

We send our sincere condolences to the family of Florence Woods, whose life was celebrated at a funeral service on April 6th. May God bless you and keep you, Florence.

Thank you to Tom Shand for the wonderful pictures taken at our April Breakfast Club and Uno's Dough-raiser!!!!
