From the Board...

HBAGNO Staff, Senior Officers and Board members have worked very closely with the City of New Orleans administration to launch the streamlined permitting and licensing system, referred to as the "One-Stop-Shop." Earlier this month, this program was officially launched. HBAGNO is very hopeful that this will help our builders run their day-to-day business. Read about the launch here...

Topic:  Kickoff to the Spring Building Season
Help Us Help You

While some of the country is still covered in snow, here in the Deep South it's Spring!  With the warmer temps, many building contractors are beginning those projects they put on hold until after winter.  Code Enforcement staff would like to offer the following tips to help you get though the permitting and inspection processes smoothly and as quickly as possible.

Recent HBI Graduates Entering Workforce

Each month HBAGNO, in collaboration with the Home Builders Institute's Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training program (PACT), will be spotlighting students who have recently completed the training process and are looking to get started in the field.  PACT curriculum is the building industry-validated construction curriculum specifically designed to teach at-risk and underserved populations including academically-challenged individuals.

Highlighted Graduate: Gerald Coleman

To set up an interview, contact David Blair at [email protected] or 504.941.0326.

PACT features techniques and practices based on the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines and aligns with the ICC-700 2008 National Green Building Standard™.  PACT relies on a time-honored apprenticeship approach to learning craft skills, combining classroom instruction and hands-on training on a job site. Skill Achievement Records (SARs) track competencies in eight trades: brick masonry, carpentry, electrical, facilities maintenance, landscaping, painting, plumbing and weatherization. Contextual learning specific to each trade, safety, construction math and tool and material identification are part of the curriculum.

HBI always has current student looking for paid/unpaid internships. For more information, contact Richard Grissom at [email protected].

JEDCO Loan Program

JEDCO's mission is to promote local business growth, and job retention.

Perhaps the most useful tool that JEDCO has at its disposal are the loan programs it administers for that targeted purpose.
Recently, several loan reviews (that clearly carry out the JEDCO mission) have been successfully approved, and are obviously beneficial to the small business interests receiving this form of financial assistance.

In short the JEDCO programs have funded needs that were not covered by the commercial lenders involved in each transaction. These JEDCO loans made the difference that allowed each project to be developed.

Please see the attached flyer outlining the JEDCO loan program, and see how your business may be able to utilize this tool.

Inflation - What Inflation?
A new monthly feature by Elliot Eisenberg, Ph.D.
GraphsandLaughs, LLC

Over the last five years the prices of gold, silver and platinum have all risen dramatically out of fear that rampant inflation will appear.  After all, the size of the Federal Reserve's balance sheet has exploded from $800 billion in 2008 to $3 trillion today and will rise to $4 trillion by the end of 2013.  Simple logic says that adding over $3 trillion dollars to the money supply in such a short time must create inflation.  And, if inflation is not here now, it surely will be sometime in the near future, right?  Maybe not.

JJF is a collaboration of the Jefferson Parish Department of Community Development, Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement, the Jefferson Parish Workforce Connection, and NOEL, that assists elderly and disabled residents of Jefferson Parish with code enforcement home repairs. The program is funded by a $450,000 Community Development Block Grant, which will be used to pay contractors and purchase materials. The work will be performed solely by HBA members, and will include some workforce training for local students at the Home Builders Institute.

Association Maximization: A Return on your Membership Investment

To help put into context the enormous value that NAHB provides to builders, remodelers and associates on an ongoing basis, let me take a moment and reiterate what was discussed at the International Builders' Show last month in Las Vegas. Throughout the event, Senior Officers spoke at numerous committee meetings to articulate the value of NAHB membership and how your national association worked doggedly to add to the bottom line of every member.

It's Worth What? You Can't Be Serious!

Builders across the country continue to face an uphill battle when seeking accurate valuations on new homes, but taking pro-active steps to engage and communicate with lenders and appraisers can help raise awareness and address this problem, according to participants in a Jan. 22 "Builders Guide to Appraisals" seminar at the International Builders' Show in Las Vegas.
