HBA in the News

'Touchdown for Homes' is a collaboration between our national association, NAHB, and the NFL Players Association to work on homes for those in need. The program has been taken to a new level by the local chapters of HBA, LHBA, and NFLPA, who are currently building 3 homes in the Lower 9th Ward for Super Bowl XLVII. This project has received a lot of local, and even national, recognition.

Topic:  Winterizing Tips

Plumbing:  Homeowners need to "think winter" when it comes to their plumbing system.  While our winters are not as brutal as those in the northeast, we can still experience sub-freezing temperatures.  A good rule of thumb is "if the temperature is below 28 for more than four hours, you should consider protection for your pipes." Whether you choose to cover your pipes, run the water at a pencil thin stream, or spend lots of money on electric heating strips, ignoring this precaution could possibly cost you "big" in the end.

Parade of Homes

Start planning now for your project to be featured on the 2013 Parade of Homes!
The Parade is essentially a super open house. HBA members from seven different Parishes pay a minimal fee to participate; those entry fees are then leveraged to purchase more advertising than a single builder could purchase on their own.

HBA staff and the Parade committee then work together to promote the Parade of Homes, and even publish a guidebook that features every home on it's own full page spread. The guidebook is available in print as well as online, and contains a map to guide potential home buyers from house to house.

EPA Announces Second Round of Enforcement for Lead Paint Rule Violations

The EPA announced 16 enforcement actions for violations of the lead-based paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) on Nov. 14 in the second round of publicized enforcement since the rule took effect in 2010.

Two one-year pilot programs were introduced to consider a firm's ability to pay penalties and to move toward a quick settlement. The majority of the 13 cases that were settled between the EPA and the firms utilized the two pilot programs to fine the firms a total of $53,792 in civil penalties.

THANK YOU!

The end of every year is education season - when the contractors need to get in their last minute classes to renew their building licenses - and HBA works hard to make sure we have available classes for our members to earn those hours. This would not be possible without the expertise of our members who teach those classes for us. We wanted to take a moment to thank those people who have volunteered their time to teach our builder CE classes...

Q: How do you know when it's time to buy new tires?
Vets Ford A: Tires are designed to last about six years with that lifespan decreasing in hot climates. All tires have tread along the edges to help divert water from the car and prevent hydroplaning and over the years the tread wears down.
