Announcing New Staff!
You may have noticed the recent flurry of activity on our social media pages. We are excited to credit this to new staff member Rhiannon Guevin! You may recognize Rhiannon from her beautiful opera performances. Rhiannon also worked for the Camp last summer and previously served as a SFAC counselor. She is now joining us in the new capacity of program administrator, with an emphasis on social media and marketing.
Support campus revitalization!

 66 days left before camp.
Greetings!

Spring has come to Sitka! Our office is back from Spring Break and we are ready to tackle our Spring cleaning, starting with a number of new additions to our revitalization efforts.

new heating system has been installed in the Yaw Arts Center and is performing wonderfully! The heating system was funded by the ArtPlace grant that we received last year. Our After School Arts classes have been relying on small space heaters, so this addition greatly heightens our capacity to host more year-round events in our classrooms. After School Art teachers are celebrating by hosting a new session of classes, as well as a new Life Drawing Class for adults.

Do you have an hour to volunteer? Come to our next Campus Work Party! All are welcome to join anytime and you can find us in Allen Hall, 9am-3pm every Saturday.

Thank you everyone who donated in the past few weeks! Campus revitalization is a colossal endeavor, and we need your help!

Dee Daniels Vocal Jazz Workshop
Interview by Rhiannon Guevin

This week we spoke with Dee Daniels about her upcoming Vocal Jazz Workshop, July 20-27 on the Sheldon Jackson Campus. Read on to find out more about Daniels and her upcoming workshop.

Inspiration and collaboration are the hallmark of Dee Daniels' Vocal Jazz Workshop.

"My goal is to go to the students, and lead the them into the realm of new information and experience with their voices," Daniels says, "I don't stand up and spout out information, but rather I assess how to communicate with them by creating an environment where they are comfortable and receptive."

It may surprise some to know that Daniels did not start her musical career as a jazz musician. Rather, she began her musical journey singing gospel music in the church choir of her stepfather, who was Baptist minister in Oakland, California. Daniels continued to hone her skills in several different genres, including R&B and pop music. While singing and playing music, however, Daniels always heard more than the basic melody of the song. She later learned that the expansion of those melodies, which felt so natural to her, was called improvisation, a key element of jazz music. Continue reading.
