Sitka Fine Arts Camp Newsletter

We Can Do It, If We All Work Together!

Greetings!
Students arrived on Monday for the inaugural Native Jazz Camp on the campus. The Native Jazz Quartet, created by Sitka-grown percussionist Ed Littlefield, has launched a week-long camp that focuses on fusing Jazz music with personal traditions. Students have been composing original music and adapting traditional melodies from around the world to create unique Jazz pieces.

The students will be performing tomorrow!
Saturday August 18 at 7:00pm in Allen Hall. Come experience their one-of-a-kind performances.

Native Jazz Quartet to release new CD
During their time in Sitka, Ed Littlefield, fellow Fine Arts Camp instructor Christian Fabian, Reuel Lubag and special guest Jason Marsalis of the famous New Orleans Jazz family have recorded their second record together as a group.

In this album, Littlefield's original project to combine ancient Tlingit melodies with Jazz has expanded with the traditions of the other members of the group. New songs draw influence, as well, from Filipino, Swedish and New Orleans music.

These are great musicians making creative and progressive music. Keep your eye on them!
