Sitka Fine Arts Camp Newsletter

We Can Do It, If We all Work Together!

Greetings!
This has been a fun week on campus.  Last night we were lucky to have Steve Lawrie and Gary Gouker on campus, talking about their experience with art. Lawrie- primarily self taught- spoke about his paintings. Gouker spoke about his past hobby of making knives and his current love for playing the harmonica. They drew a great crowd!

This was the first in a series of Art Conversations put on by the Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.  Keep your eyes open for next month's edition!

We also have a new group of Sitka photographers hitting the scene.  The after-school class taught by Harriet McClain ended last week, graduating a group of enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders.

Harriet said it had been some time since she has taught kids, but from what I saw they learned a lot.  As I was taking photos, I got advice (from the young students) about the importance of the background, spacing and color.

Harriet donated all of her time as the instructor for this class. Another incredible volunteer--thank you Harriet!
Renovations in Allen
Pete Weiland and our dedicated construction volunteers continue to do a lot of work in Allen.  They will meet again this Saturday-- Thank you for everything you are doing!
Double the Money: Matching Donations
Thanks to the effort of some of our donors, we have been receiving a number of matching grants. These are grants given by foundations or corporations that match the amount given by an individual donor.

Take a look if your employer or former employer offers a matching gift program.
We have received matches from:

Rasmuson Foundation
Google
IBM
Pew

And I know Alaska Airlines has a Dollars-for-Doers volunteer match program. Look for these too!

Thank you to everyone that has taken the extra step and doubled your donation.
Live at the Waterfront
The excitement of the Jazz on the Waterfront concert is now captured on CD.  The SFAC Big Band has put together a CD of great live music.

All proceeds will go directly toward revitalizing the Sheldon Jackson Campus.  Give this CD as a gift-- it will uplift your friends and the SJ Campus at the same time!

"Live at the Waterfront 2011" is on sale now at Old Harbor Books or call 907-747-3085.

Joining the Island Institute
Elena Gustafson recently joined the Campus Community and the Island Institute staff as their new Program Associate.

Originally from northern New Mexico, Elena can't wait to get out and explore the ocean around Sitka. She recently graduated from Whitman College with a degree in Environmental Humanities.

Coming into this job, she's excited about all the collaborative possibilities within SJ campus, working with the writers the Island Institute brings to town, and dreaming up new program ideas for creative storytelling and engagement in this community.

On the side, Elena will be working on her own writing, including a book entitled Towards a Climate of Health.

We're excited to have you, Elena!
