Sitka Fine Arts Camp

Greetings!
The Sitka Fine Arts Camp has been busy making connections and plans for the next wave of work in the Revitalization of this National Historic Landmark we have.

In August, Executive Director, Roger Schmidt, was invited on a train ride in Anchorage.  This was more than a sight-seeing trip.  It was part the Alaska Grantmakers Tour, put on annually by the Rasmuson Foundation to introduce funders from around the country to pioneering programs in Alaska.

Roger connected with representatives from the National Endowment of the Arts, the William Randolf Hearst Foundation, the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, the ExxonMobile Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, many of whom made a spur-of-the-moment visit to Sitka, and the Sheldon Jackson Campus, later in the week.

During their visit, the Foundation representatives met artists Teri Rofkar and Tommy Joseph, Sitka Sound Science Center Executive Directer, Lisa Busch and listened to plans for the "Our Town" grant that was awarded to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp in July.  They took a full tour of the Campus, including Allen Auditorium.

Harris Sherman, undersecretary of Natural Resources and Environment at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, also took time to tour the Campus with Roger during his visit in August. Rural Development is a branch of the USDA that has given grants to the SJ Child Care Center, Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services and to the Sheldon Jackson College for the Rasmuson Student Center.

The Campus has a special feel to it.  I hope that a trip here lets the visitor experience and absorb some of what makes it unique, and take it with them.

A huge part of this feeling is influenced by the people involved in Revitalizing the Campus. You can look at the meters to the right and see what I mean. This money and time has been donated by people. These numbers do not directly measure heart, but they are a good indicator of how much heart has already put into this project!

Together, we've opened a community-run Hames Center, hosted the biggest SFAC ever, and completely renovated 9 apartments and five houses for rent.

Are you ready for what comes next??

The building committee has been meeting with new determination. Winterization and Allen Restoration have been foremost in the discussion. If you want to volunteer, let us know!
