Sitka Fine Arts Camp

Greetings!

When Alaska Arts Southeast created a vision and plan to make Sheldon Jackson a campus alive with arts education, it defined phases in the process.  At this point, with all of the community support and hard work, we have made our way through the first milestones.

The goal of Phase one was to prepare the campus for the 567 students that attended the Fine Arts Camp this year. I've heard so much great feedback from the campers, the faculty and the parents, and I think we could say that this goal was was met and was a pretty big success.

Phase two will focus on major reconstruction and rehabilitation that needs happen to preserve the historic buildings. This site is designated as one of what is now 2,500 National Historic Landmarks in the United States.  More recently we were listed as one of the Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties (AAHP.) As part of these lists, we have the added responsibility of the preservation and restoration this campus.

I was researching, I came across another list:

America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places

In 1999, the Richard H. Allen Auditorium was listed as one of the countries 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The threat was defined as deterioration and neglect. The newest information on the page is from 2009, but it does give a brief history of the struggles associated with the building.

As we enter Phase two, we are look at Allen Auditorium- as a symbol and a goal of what we want to accomplish in the next year.  Let's finish the restoration story that National Trust for Historic Preservation recognized to have national importance back in 1999!

The Native Jazz Quartet comes to Sitka

Sitka Fine Arts Camp is proud to present the Native Jazz Quartet, led by two of our favorite SFAC music instructors, Ed Littlefield and Christian Fabian. This September, The Quartet is launching its first tour, including eight cities in both Washington and Alaska.

The Native Jazz Quartet will introduce the integration of Tlingit music and Traditional Jazz.  They will play music from Littlefield's new CD "Walking Between Worlds and Fabian's new CD "West Coast Session."

"It's the first of its kind," Littlefield says of the music he wrote for his album.

The Native Jazz Quartet will feature Jason Marsalis, of the famous New Orleans jazz family and Reuel Lubag, one of the well-established musicians of the Pacific Northwest.

It will be a great show, and this is only the beginning. Fabian says this will be an on-going project, continuing with a workshop held next year on the Sheldon Jackson campus (keep your eyes open for that!)
