Sitka Fine Arts Camp Volunteer Newsletter

Greetings!
An official count-down will tell you how close camp actually is: on June 6 (3 days!) elementary-age students will begin classes, and June 12 (9 days!) middle-school age students will arrive and begin their stay in the dorms on campus.

This week we had help from locals and visitors to tackle the challenges of classroom and dorm-room set-up.

On Monday, a dedicated crew of volunteers continued to put the final touches on North Pacific Hall to ready it for the first faculty arrivals this coming weekend. Jeanine Holzman is lending 35 handmade quilts, one to decorate each room. Historic photographs of the school, as well as Sitka Fine Arts Camp students and faculty now adorn the walls and there is plush bedding and mattresses to ensure a good night's sleep for our hardworking artists in residence.

On Tuesday, a group of Volunteers in Mission (VIM's), arrived and started working almost right away.  Many of them have spent significant time and effort on the SJ campus in the past. They will be here for almost two weeks, re-visiting a place that many of them knew very well, and lending their help getting ready for camp.  This week they set up furniture in Sweetland Hall, moved mattresses, and made beds.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we asked this summer's campers to help set-up classrooms.  We spent time sorting supplies and organizing paper, paints, tools and equipment in classrooms.

Our computers arrived for our digital arts classes arrived! Now we will be able to set-up classrooms for Photoshop, Video Art and Animation and let the creativity of our campers (and teachers) run wild!

There is plenty of work left to do, so if you didn't get a chance to come out this week, we need your help this weekend and anytime you have a free moment next week! We need to finish setting up classroom furniture, assemble a stage in the Hames Center, set up our camp store and sort t-shirts, finish last minute construction jobs, sort keys, run errands, and all manner of small tasks that really make a big difference for our students, staff, and volunteers.
