Sitka Fine Arts Camp Volunteer Newsletter

Greetings!

This Saturday we have several exiting milestones to celebrate. Thanks to our amazing full time volunteer plumbers and carpenters, we have both hot and cold running water in North Pacific Hall, and a new wall and new plumbing in the Sweetland cafeteria. The SFAC kitchen staff will be putting the cafeteria through it's paces by providing lunch for Saturday's volunteers.

Another milestone is that we've finished Kellogg! All that is left is carpet installation and a little plumbing. We'll be moving over to North Pacific Hall Saturday and concentrating our efforts on cleaning and prepping the rooms for the arrival of the fabulous SFAC Faculty.

We will also be taking advantage of the last weekend of the city wide clean up to dispose of the last of the garbage on campus. Try as might, we could not salvage all the old electronics, and those will be disposed of appropriately. Thanks to Stan Barge for all the long hours he has put in sorting and fixing piles of out dated computer "stuff?"

Several people have adopted garden beds, but there are still lots of gardening opportunities. Patty McPike and her Brownie Scouts will be digging in the dirt this Saturday. If you have a group who would like to do some gardening, give us a call or just show up, things are sprouting up like crazy.

We will also be working on the Whitmore and Fraser roofs, so experienced roof guys and gals, bring your tool belts. If you don't like heights, Chan Richards has the new North Pacific fire escape stairs framed up and he needs help from the construction crew. Speaking of construction crew,  thanks to April Dryden for replacing the rotten exterior wall of Yaw, and much more.  She can swing a hammer with the best of them.

If a paint brush is your preferred tool, we also have painting to do in Wurster and several other buildings, as well as many other odd jobs around campus.  We're making incredible progress, but we still need your help, so come join us!

SFAC Faculty weigh in on the Campus progress!

After following progress on facebook and through emails, I had the chance to get a first hand impression of the campus this week. I'm so excited about SFAC's vision and the way a whole community has come together to get the campus back to pristine condition. Scott Davis, another faculty member in town for a residency, and I took a tour of the campus. We are in awe of the beauty and work already accomplished. Scott took a special interest in North Pacific, sharing many good memories and showing me where he had jumped out of the window when he was a camper himself. This year North Pacific will house the faculty. The energy on this campus feels just amazing. It is clear in my mind that the future for SFAC and Sitka will be a melting pot for the arts and ultimately will draw attention from around the world. This will be a breeding ground for new trends, compositions, playwrights or anything else having to do with the arts, all year round and not just in the summer. The excitement is in the air and the determination of the volunteers shows that we are moving into a new paradigm: "One for All and All for One". It's a dream come true. I will do all in my power to support this amazing cause because it is a true representation of the spirit of working together for the greater good of all involved.

Tracy's Chocolate Chip Cake

This recipe is great for lunchboxes, as it is sturdy and doesn't have a messy

frosting. I reduced the fat and white sugar from Gramma's original recipe by using
applesauce. You can eliminate the fat completely by substituting remaining oil with
additional applesauce, but the texture and flavor suffer a bit.

1 1/12 Cup boiling water
1 Cup quick oats
3/4 Cup white sugar
1Cup brown sugar
1/4 cup vegetable oil (canola)
1/4 Cup apple sauce
2 eggs
1 1/2 Cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1 bag chocolate chips (about 2 cups)
cocunut

Pour boiling water over oats and let stand for 10 minutes. Mix in sugars, oil and
apple sauce. Add eggs and beat well. Sift together flour, soda, salt and cocoa. Add
to oatmeal mixture. Stir in half of the chocolate chips. Pour into 9 X 13 pan that
has been sprayed with non stick, or greased and floured. Sprinkle top with
remaining chocolate chips and just enough coconut to garnish. Bake at 350 for 35-40
minutes or until cake pulls from sides of pan and coconut is toasted.
