Sitka Fine Arts Camp Volunteer Newsletter

Greetings!

This week the SJ Revitalization effort grew by leaps and bounds from donations to our Capital Campaign by folks who are unable to volunteer but want to make sure they can contribute. Do you live out of town, but would love to help? Consider a donation for building materials. We need your help to maintain the momentum!

Last Saturday volunteers scraped moss off of roofs, weeded, caulked and painted, plumbed, put appliances into Kellogg and did the dirty work of cleaning toilets.

Throughout the week had volunteers working on roofs again, and they finally look like they are fit to be overhead. On Tuesday, two elders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to help paint.

This Saturday we need your help on some exciting new projects. Clay Culbert needs a cleaning crew from 10-12pm, Meet at Sweetland Hall. The Grounds Committee has put together a Landscaping Plan for campus and we are looking for volunteers and groups to "adopt a garden." "Adopters" will be given creative space and will be responsible for weeding, soil preparation and planting. Do you crave an outlet for creative expression through perennial plants? This is the opportunity for you!

Sitka Historical National Park Celebrates 100 years

On Saturday the Sitka Historical National Park will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary. A totem pole, designed by local artist Tommy Joseph, will be raised to mark the celebration.

Artists from around Alaska have come to Sitka to help work on the totem. Four of the carvers are staying in Stewart Cottage on the SJ Campus while they work.  Sitka Fine Arts Camp is happy to support the project and the work of a former and current faculty member. Tommy Joseph and Ketchikan artist Donny Varnell have taught at camp and affected the lives of many SFAC students.
