Traditional Mexican Cooking

Fernando Pizarro grew up in the central part of Mexico. For his cooking, Fernando researches traditional recipes from all regions of Mexico. In this class, Fernando will make traditional Mexican ingredients and flavors accessible to all eaters and cooks. Mexican cuisine is primarily a fusion of indigenous Mesoamerican cooking with European elements added after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in the 16th century. Mexican cuisine is closely tied to the culture, social structure and popular traditions of the country. Students in the class will prepare popular dishes from different regions of the country. In the class we will create and eat appetizers, fresh homemade salsa using different types of chiles, main dishes, and soups. Some of the dishes we might make include: cochinita pibil, (a roasted pork marinated in achiote seed) from the Yucatan, a red mole from Oaxaca, tinga (a chipotle chicken dish), chicken barbacoa (marinated chicken wrapped and steamed in banana leaf), tamales, and more. All throughout the class you will learn basic Mexican cooking tips, recipes and history, and of course have a great amount of fun and food. Class size: 12

Printmaking

Instructor: Jessica Krichels

Sunday-Thursday, June 7-11, 6:30pm-8:30pm with a final display and reception on Friday, June 12th at 6pm

Cost: $185

A print: A mark or impression made in or on a surface by pressure.

With more than 17 years of teaching experience, Jessica Krichels has worked with students of every age to unleash their inner artist. In this class, artists and non-artists alike will enjoy exploring some of the many possibilities and techniques of printmaking-a remarkably versatile category of art making. This class will get you playing with marks, surfaces, textures, and of course, colors. We will experiment with many simple and effective techniques: using original stamps to create complex patterns and prints, subtractive and additive monotype techniques using multiple colors, stencils and cut outs, some basic etching (where lines are incised into a surface which is then printed) and collagraph prints created from textured collages. We will also combine all these techniques to create wonderful, original works of art. (Please feel free to take this class again, as Jessica will add new elements and ideas to the course.) Class Size: 12
