Young Performer's Theater presents East of the Sun and West of the Moon Next Week!

The Young Performer's Theater kicks off its second season next weekend, with shows running November 21st to 23rd. The play, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, written by Tina Howe and adapted from a Norwegian folk tale, follows the adventures of a young girl whose poor family gives her to a enchanted bear in exchange for wealth. The tale features a variety of magical characters, including trolls, hags, and four mystical winds. The show is appropriate for the whole family; opening night is at 7pm on Friday the 21st, followed by matinees at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available now at Old Harbor Books: $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors, free for children under 5.
Barn Dance, Saturday, November 15th, 7PM

A community barn dance fundraiser is set for Saturday, November 15 from 7:00 P.M. - 9:30 P.M. in the Odess Theater in Allen Hall. Donations at the door will benefit Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

All are invited to participate in mixers, circles and contra dances, or simply listen to the live music of Sitka's Fishing for Cats band. Beginners and seasoned dancers of all ages are invited.

All dances are taught and called. No partner is needed and no dancing experience is necessary. The first hour of the dance will be geared to beginners and young dancers. Dancers are encouraged to carry clean shoes to the venue to protect the floor.

The dance is an alcohol and smoke free event. For more information call 747-3412.
Volunteer Day This Saturday!

In other news, it's amazing what we can do when we set to something together. The first Saturday of November was a Volunteer Day for the ages. We had such a time on the second floor of Whitmore Hall tearing out carpet and setting jackhammer to several inches of concrete, hauling from the bathroom around four tons of material in five gallon buckets. Photos below:

We at the camp love these epic days so much (and we're sure the same can be said for the volunteers who come out week after week) that we thought we would have another this coming Saturday. What's in store? Not a barn raising, but a barn lowering. The Sheldon Jackson campus has been gifted a pole barn from the Forest Service, and we'll be hauling pieces from the Forest Service compound out Halibut Point Road to a site near the maintenance buildings on the SJ campus.

Convening at the SJ Maintenance Building at 9AM, we'll leave for the worksite shortly thereafter. If you arrive after the trucks have departed, you can join us at the Forest Service Compound which is just before Kramer Avenue, and before Sandy Beach out Halibut Point road (on the right).

There will be a variety of low to high intensity tasks, and anyone is welcome at any time. We'll have a cherry picker and a forklift, and will need volunteers to unscrew, unbolt, label and take photos (the last two to facilitate putting the structure back together on the SJ campus). We'll load the disassembled components of the barn onto trucks, then move them over to SJ.

Don't worry, the barnraising will take place later - we think it will be quite enough to take one barn apart in one day. For lunch, we'll have pizza delivered to the worksite for a quick bite. If you would like to bring additional food (desserts, salads, etc.), please feel free to do so.

So, a quick breakdown of the day:

What: Volunteer Day, Barn Lowering!

When: This Saturday, November 15th, 9AM-3PM, with Lunch around 12PM!

Where: Sheldon Jackson Maintenance Building (near Rasmuson) then Forest Service Compound out Halibut Point Road (See above italics for directions)!
Thank you for your ongoing support,
