For this week's newsletter, Monica Ague wrote a piece on Young Performers Theater. The piece is a great update on the progress the kids have made so far on the project.
Young Performers Theater, An Update

For the past three weeks, the Young Performer's Theater cast has been hard at work bringing East of the Sun and West of the Moon, written by Tina Howe, to life. This past weekend, they ran the entire show, complete with all of the movement that will be featured in the final production. Meanwhile, parent volunteers have been hard at work designing costumes, sets, and props, and will continue to be an integral part of the play creation process.

Although they've been busy working on all these aspects of the play, we caught up with the cast last Tuesday and asked: What is your favorite part of the show?

Cast members found both the funny and serious sides of the play exciting. A troll explosion was a favorite part for many, while Abigail FitzGibbon, the West Cast's Gunnhild/Troll Princess particularly enjoyed the troll wedding, which features a minister who "misprounces everything." Others noted the special traits of their own characters: Levi Danielson, the East Cast's Olav, is excited to play a man who has "no feeling in his right leg," while Muriel Reid, who plays the East Cast's Knut, declared that she enjoyed playing a mean character because it required "more acting." Deborah Yearwood, Tove in the East Cast, noted her character's story arc: she gets to transform, over the course of the show, from "something timid to something awesome."

Over the course of the next few weeks of rehearsals, the cast will practice a little bit of music--a portion of the show that Rita Christianson, the West Cast's Einar, named as one of her favorites--and work extensively on character development, which will help to cement the plot and concept of the whole play. The show goes up November 21st at 7pm, with two more performances at 2pm on November 22nd and 23rd. Tickets are available now and cost $10 for general admission and $5 for students. Stay tuned to future newsletters for more updates on the cast and show!
