Greetings!
We're gearing up in the fall here at SFAC--even with the coming winter, the campus is full of vibrancy. First, a brief postscript on the Laundry building: we've surpassed our goal with donations given after the Save It Or Lose It campaign came to a close. We are thrilled with this show of support. Thank you.
Our maintenance team is winterizing buildings, bringing heat to the campus core, and our events team is wrapping up the last few weddings of the fall.
After-School Art is in full swing, and will remain a center of campus vitality throughout this season and the next; see below for photos from classes happening right now at SFAC. We also highlight Bill Workman, a new member of our maintenance team. And we look ahead to the arrival of Saturday Work Parties - the first of which for this season will take place October 4th. More information on these events, which bring essential energy of volunteer effort to campus, in the coming weeks.

That the Sheldon Jackson College campus was in near catastrophic disrepair prior to the start of 2011's restoration process almost goes without saying in the annals of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Crucial to the revitalization of the campus is the ongoing care of the campus's buildings. Keeping watch over this revitalization is SFAC's dedicated maintenance team.
Bill Workman, recently joined the SFAC community after spending 15 years in the United States Coast Guard. Bill has worked at forward operating bases ranging from Great Inagua Bahamas as well as an isolated LORAN Station on Attu island, located at the furthest point in the Aleutian chain in the Bering sea with 19 other individuals, serving as an independent duty Facility Manager.
The SFAC environment is quite different, to be sure. As Bill relays it, the level of stress at SFAC is much lower, though still buzzing with activity. Typical days include reviewing and executing work orders, assessing availability of equipment and parts, and developing a long term plan for keeping buildings around campus in good condition. Bill distinguishes between "preventive maintenance," which entails, in a more ideal world, minimizing the necessity for repairs, developing a long-term plan for keeping structures in good condition, and "corrective maintenance," which involves retrofitting and repairing older structures and systems that have already fallen into a state of disrepair. The SFAC campus is made up, largely, of historic buildings that have called for and continue to require a good deal of corrective maintenance, but the future of the campus relies on endeavors towards preventive maintenance. Bill is currently working with Mike Wild, Facility Manager, to create a preventive maintenance program that will protect assets vital to SFAC operations.
When asked what he has enjoyed most about his time at SFAC so far, Bill answers without hesitation: "good people, good mission." Sitka, in part, gets a similar response: the small town environment, the people, the views, the activities, the fishing.... He regularly shore fishes Junk Bay, at the end of Indian River.
Bill has snowboarded for around 20 years, introducing the sport to his wife, Kristen, who has served in the Coast Guard for the past 12 years, and is currently stationed at Airstation Sitka as an Aviation Maintenance Technician 1st Class. They have been married for 8 years. He has also been an avid skydiver. He received his bachelor's degree in Organizational Leadership from Thomas Edison State University, and was an active duty volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters for eight years.
