Trombone Recital Tonight: Thursday August 21, 7pm

Former SFAC camper and counselor George Jones is giving a trombone recital tonight at the Sitka Performing Arts Center. Joining him on stage will be Sitka Fine Arts Camp faculty member Susan Reed and our Executive Director, Roger Schmidt. Now a rising Junior at Oberlin Conservatory, it has been a joy to see George develop as a musician during his time at Sitka Fine Arts Camp and beyond and we hope that you will join us tonight to hear some beautiful music!

COMING SOON!

We are excited to announce the addition of five amazing volunteers who will be joining us on September 1st. We will be welcoming four members of the new Sitka Service Fellows program as well as one Americorps volunteer. Our new staff members will be working in a variety of capacities such as coordinating our After School Art program, running our Young Performers Theater program, working on our development staff, arts administration, and developing our Artist Series and artist residency program. A Letter from SFAC Board President Lauren Allen

Fourteen years ago Roger Schmidt stopped me along side the road to ask if I would join The Sitka Fine Arts Camp Board of Directors.  I didn't exactly know what a board of directors did, but since I attended camp with Roger and was friends with his wife Jeanine I went ahead and said yes.

Even though I didn't know much about being on a board, long term board members Karen Grussendorf (a board member for 20 years) and Mary Hames (member for 19 years) quickly became mentors and wonderful friends.

Back in the early 2000's we didn't have a campus, and quite honestly we barely had a camp.  Roger was rather new as the director, and came on after the camp had been closed for one year.  There was just one camp session, and only around 100 campers.

Our board worked very closely with Roger, more like staff than a governing board.    We had long discussions about bringing back Junior High and Senior High camp, and we formulated a plan to create the Mini (now elementary and circus camp).  One year we even joked and dreamed about taking over the SJC campus...

My term as board president is ending in September, and after 14 years I will be retiring from the board.  I still plan on keeping my volunteer role as the camp travel guru, and I bet you'll find me in the office working with Roger and Kenley on camp projects.  I have been so fortunate to be part of such an amazing organization, and I look forward to seeing what the next 14 years and beyond holds for The Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

A Note from Roger
I want to give my personal thanks to Lauren Allen for her service on the board.  It has been an amazing journey that I have been fortunate to share for almost the entire time I have been Director.  Lauren embodies the quality of great board members...a greater thinker, worker, supporter and advocate. I will miss having her on the board...thankfully, knowing Lauren, she will remain part of the team.

Thank you for your ongoing support,
