 Gwynne Brown Residency

Don't miss the final event of Gwynne Brown's residency, tonight, May 9th, at 7pm in the Del Shirley Room in Allen Hall. Brown will discuss African-American composer William Dawson's Negro Folk Symphony and its mysterious descent into obscurity. Tickets for the event are $15 and include light refreshments and appetizers. Tickets can be purchased at Old Harbor Books or at the door.

Brown has been busy this week giving presentations to several music classes at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary as well as teaching mbira lessons to Sitka residents. Brown also gave a talk about the mbira at Kettleson Memorial Library. You can hear Brown discuss the mbira and William Dawson in an interview on Raven Radio here.

The Transformation of Yaw Chapel
Written by Gail Bagley
The newly renovated Yaw Chapel

Every campus needs at least one lovely, inviting place where quiet, reflection, reverence, individual expression, and thoughtful exchanges of ideas have a comfortable home. Thanks to the vision, creativity, and talents of the incredible Yaw Chapel Project Team--Judi Lehmann, Janine Holzman, and Ellen Leuders--Yaw Chapel is now such a place once again. It is easy to imagine peaceful contemplation, respectful sharing of ideas, intentional listening, and inspired solo expressions encouraged by the warmth, comfort, and beauty brought to this newly renovated space.

The "Yaw Victories" accomplished through the hard work of this team make for an impressive list. Along with the dedicated help from others including Mary Therese, Peter Gorman, James Poulson, and Jerry Fleming, the whole interior has been freshly painted and reupholstered with heartwarming colors and fabrics. The carpets, flooring, and bathrooms have been thoroughly cleaned (everyone knows what that means when there has been much use for a long time with little cleaning!), and the wood trim in the windows and bench seating has been refurbished (and yes, that meant a LOT of tedious, dust-in-your-face sanding). Unglamorous jobs like cleaning out mile-high piles of paper and storeroom nightmares, as well as adding lighthearted touches like bathroom mirrors with some character, have created an open, pleasant environment that is flexible for many uses.

Like most complex projects, the work to fully restore and repurpose Yaw Chapel is far from done. Still to be conquered is removing years of accumulated dust and soot from the highest beams and ceiling, replacing the exterior gutters, repairing the entry steps and decking, and shining up the many windows that bring in that beautiful light. Somewhere down the line, new carpeting and bathroom flooring would greatly enhance the look, feel, and long-term usability of the space. And, for the green thumbers out there, the immediate area around the Chapel is calling for some Landscaping TLC. There are service opportunities waiting for a wide range of interests, skills, energy levels, and  needed resources.

If you are inspired to be part of the Yaw Chapel project, please jump on board! Call the Sitka Fine Arts Camp office at 907-747-3085 or email office@fineartscamp.org.
