We would like to introduce you to Gail Bagley, who joined the Sitka Fine Arts Camp team in November 2013 as an Office Volunteer. Gail is a retired elementary school teacher and brings warmth, kindness, and an amazing work ethic to everything that she does. We feel very fortunate to have Gail as a part of our organization.
What made you want to volunteer for Sitka Fine Arts Camp?
I felt drawn to volunteer with SFAC because of how my life as a young person was greatly enriched by my experiences with the arts and the people teaching and participating in those happenings. I wanted to be part of where that kind of education was happening for young people now. Parallel to that was also the desire to be part of the transformation of this campus into a place that is thriving again but with new vision...in not only the arts but in many areas of learning, creativity, and community development.
What has been your favorite part of the campus revitalization?
It is so awesome to see such a diverse range of people who are willing to give so generously of their time, talents, and resources to contribute to a longterm vision of something that enhances the quality of life for so many others in our immediate and extended community, especially the young.
Do you have a favorite building on campus?
The old laundry building (or was it the power plant?) (across the street from the SFAC office). It is in a sad state of disrepair right now but I love its design, windows all round, and location.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
The people, no doubt about it! Positive, supportive, inclusive, creative, skilled and knowledgeable, visionary, hardworking need I say more? I also very much enjoy being part of something I can totally believe in and support unreservedly.
What is your favorite memory from your time as a Fine Arts camper?
The SFAC camp did not exist when I was camper age so I attended a fine arts camp outside of Anchorage on a Sears scholarship based on my clarinet audition. It was a "magical" choral singing experience from my time there that has remained firmly etched in my heart and memory as one of life's highlights.
