Greetings!

We are thrilled to announce our class catalog for Adult Camp 2014. See below for a list of the exciting classes that will be offered this summer:
secondAdult Camp 2014

Drawing the Sitka Landscape with Norman Campbell
This class is for anyone who wishes to improve their drawing skills and techniques. Each class will begin with practical exercises to increase drawing skills and confidence. Then we'll venture out into the varied Sitka landscape in search of subjects to draw. We'll primarily use pencil and colored pencil, but we'll also experiment with pen and charcoal. All materials will be provided.

Exploring Printmaking with Jessica Krichels
In this class, artists and non-artists alike will enjoy exploring some of the many possibilities and techniques of printmaking - a remarkably versatile category of art making. This class will get you playing with marks, surfaces, textures, and of course, colors. We will experiment with many simple and effective techniques: using original stamps to create complex patterns and prints, subtractive and additive monotype techniques using multiple colors, stencils and cut outs, some basic etching (where lines are incised into a surface which is then printed) and collagraph prints made from textured collages. We will also combine techniques to create wonderful, original works of art. All materials will be provided.

Shakespeare with Mike Eisenstein and Nora Gustuson
"What do you read, my lord? Words, words, words."  Come learn the power of words and play with what many consider some of the best text ever written.  We will cover iambic pentameter, rising line, the difference between verse and prose and character development through text.

Sitka Through the Lense of Time with Joe Roman
In collaboration with the Sitka sound Science Center: Scientists and naturalists have recently begun using journals, menus, and other documents to examine how wildlife and human communities have changed over time. With a focus on Southeast Alaska, we will use readings; museum collections; coastal explorations; and documents such as old photographs, letters, and menus to examine shifts in the natural and cultural environment of Sitka over past decades. By exploring the past and the present-day landscape of Southeast Alaska, students will participate in nature writing that takes the long view-examining changes in their lives and those of their ancestors. How has your patch of Earth changed since you were a child? How could you document these changes for future generations? What's been lost, what's been regained? Topics may include fisheries, culture, timber, climate, and sea otters. Participants will work on individual and joint projects. The class will encourage readings, research, and writing outside of class.

Sonic Boom with Ed Littlefield
Join our master of rhythm in an exciting exploration of rhythm, funk, fun and groove. Discover a world where ordinary objects become musical instruments. Students will build a giant rhythm machine together using bodies, trash cans, water jugs, and any other sonic tools. This class is for everyone, musicians and non-musicians alike.

Exploring Chamber Music with Susan Reed
In collaboration with the Sitka Summer Music Festival: It doesn't matter whether you know a lot about classical music or feel like you know very little... this class will be full of music, practical activities and fun facts to enhance your music appreciation and listening skills! Join longtime Sitka Summer Music Festival music educator Susan Reed (the person who does the pre-concert chats and writes the notes) to get an overview of works featured on this year's exciting programs. Along the way, you will get tips on understanding style and form, how to decode a printed concert program, experience guided listening tours for some of the music that will be played at the Festival, learn stories about some of the composers and their scores, and experience a unit on the work of some outstanding but little-known women composers. Participants will receive a handy mini-guide to chamber music and have the chance to ask questions and discuss reactions and ideas. And there will be surprise guest speakers/musicians joining us! Loving music is a lifelong adventure...treat yourself (your heart, mind and ears) with some new ways to expand your musical knowledge - and hopefully add to the joy of hearing live concerts, including wonderful SSMF performances at the Centennial Building! Tuition for this class includes  tickets to the Sitka Summer Music Festival Concert at 7:30 pm on Friday, June 6th and 7th (and optional pre-concert chat at 6:45).

Meet May's Artist in Residence: Musicologist Gwynne Kuhner Brown

We are excited to introduce you to May's Artist in Residence, musicologist Gwynne Kuhner Brown. Brown is a musicologist, piano player, and mbira player with a special passion for American concert music of the 20th century. Brown is Associate Professor of Music History and Music Theory at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. She is currently on sabbatical working on a book about the life and works of William Dawson, famed director of the Tuskegee Institute Choir, creator of admired arrangements of religious folk songs, and composer of the obscure Negro Folk Symphony. Visit here for more information on Brown and her scholarship.

While in Sitka, Brown will be giving presentations, teaching mbira lessons, and talking to elementary music classes. See below for a schedule of events during Brown's time in Sitka:

Monday May 5th, 7pm, Kettleson Memorial Library
A Thousand Year Old "Piano"? Meet the Mbira

Join Gwynne Brown for a discussion of the mbira, a traditional instrument of the Shona people in Zimbabwe. Brown will discuss the music and cultural significance of the instrument, which has been played for over 1,000 years at religious rituals, royal courts, and social occasions. The talk is free and open to the public.

Friday May 9th, 7pm, Del Shirley Room in Allen Hall
"The Greatest Symphony You've Never Heard of"

William Dawson (1899-1990) was an African-American composer and choral conductor whose arrangements of Negro spirituals are staples of the choral repertoire. But his dream was to be an orchestral composer, and in 1934 he got what should have been his big break: his Negro Folk Symphony was given four performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra under celebrity conductor Leopold Stokowski. Audiences were wildly enthusiastic about the piece, and the critics concurred. What happened next? Professor Gwynne Brown's talk will trace the dramatic rise and fall of Dawson's masterpiece, and reveal what was lost when his symphony was allowed to sink into obscurity. Light refreshments and appetizers will be served following the talk. Tickets are $15 and are available now at Old Harbor Books.

In addition to the above presentations, Brown will be teaching half-hour mbira lessons during the week of May 5th. Lessons will be $10 for 30 minutes.

For more information or to sign-up for an mbira lesson call the Fine Arts Camp office at 907-747-3085
