Crackling fire, fresh caught fish - great company!

Welcome to the Wawang Lake Resort Newsletter

Gosh, there was so much that went on at the resort this year and I have so much to tell you but there's just not enough room here to say it all.  The following articles are some highlighted moments our guests experienced in 2012, however we have so many more stories that can be found on our FACEBOOK page Like us on Facebook for you to catch up on.

The 2012 season proved to be both rewarding and challenging for our guests whether fishing or hunting.  One week the fish were jumping in the boat and then the next the fishing were swimming away from boats.  Spring proved to be slower than normal for our trophy fish anglers but the number of catches remained strong.   As it turned out fall fishing was the most outstanding for both trophy fish and numbers.

Overall though, a great year!
48.5
Largest 2012 Northern Pike
Ben Isebrand from southern Minnesota and his dad David have been guest of Wawang Lake for several years.  It's always a pleasure to have them visit and on this trip WOW.....
A NEW RECORD FOR THE YEAR!! Congratulations Ben on this 48" MONSTER!! Great job and fantastic release!

Largest 2012 Walleye
Some Anglers have all the luck!  Sam Costanzo - Omaha, NE caught & released this beautiful 31 3/4 " walleye but the story doesn't end there.....
The picture that almost got away of Sam's fish was thought to be destroyed but God looks down on those that pout long enough and the picture was found on the memory card. After a depressing night on all of our parts, a good laugh followed along with the picture!
We're proud to say that Sam has been a loyal guest of Wawang Lake for so long now that he is considered family.  He is also a true believer of releasing trophy fish so that the future fishing on Wawang Lake remains strong and the fish remain healthy.   See you in 2013 Sam!
How About Quantity
People always hear how we have BIG fish and we are definitely proud of that fact, but don't forget, we also have PLENTY of fish too!
Look at this nice catch.....oh don't worry there were eight guys involved with catching these beauties and yes, they are all within the slot size too.  Nice aren't they?
Rick & Mark from near Chicago, Illinois have also been guests of Wawang Lake for 10 years and look forward to many more chats around the campfire.  Congratulation on such a great catch boys!

It's just keeps on getting better!
Looking for A Trophy?  Why Not a Few
Todd from Minnesota came to Wawang Lake a few years ago and on his very first trip said that he caught his biggest walleye and northern in his life in one day on Wawang Lake.  On this trip he caught:

Walleye: 29", 27", 27"
Northern: 41"

Many guests of Wawang Lake experience a week of fishing just like this!
NICE 440lb black bear
2012 BEAR HUNT
Nothing complicated about Jon Haman - Iowa City, IA's bear hunt except trying to get the bruin back to camp!
Wow, this boar was BIG and weighed in at 440 lb.  Not bad for a first time bear hunter, I'd say!

The very next week we had Andy Skemp Mc Gregor, IA (below) surprise us by bagging this HUGE boar that weighed 475 lb.
Andy Skemp with owner/guide Terry Kaliska
This was Andy's 2nd bear hunt with Wawang Lake and have to say this bear does dwarf the other one.

What a fantastic bear hunt 2012 proved to be! Great hunters and some  really big bear!  Congratulations to all of our hunters!

The OUTBACK
New to 2012 was our OUTBACK adventure trip that was a tremendous success with our guests.  Exciting, exhilarating and exclusive to remote and secluded fishing.
Access to these lakes is by amphibious vehicle - the ARGO.  So be sure to take advantage of this service on one of your next trips up.   Dates are limited so book early!

As one guest stated:
      The fishing was unbeatable and
It's not just another off road trip....
            It's an incredible experience!

Upgraded Boat Ramps

During 2012 we were busy with some important upgrades and improvements.  We're proud to let you know that our boat ramp system has been made easier for our guests by including winches and lights.
They are working out nicely!

Improvements in the Campground
In addition to upgrading and improving our boat ramp system we were also busy building new picnic tables for our camping guests to enjoy.

The design includes an extension on one end of the table for the convenience of propane grills or stoves.  This new design will allow for more comfortable seating and eating while cooking.   Oh yes, and there's now plenty of room for that belly after a big feed of fresh caught fish, grin!

Faith
Teen Lands HUGE Northern
We couldn't be more proud of Faith from Illinois lands this fat, monster 39"northern pike and she held the fish all by herself. (She loves to fish but hates to hold them....this is NOT her first big trophy though.  Their group catches lots of them!

Oh Marlene!
Keith Leinenweaver from South English, IA Marlenes' husband is just about ready to throw her overboard after she out fished him left and right.  Marlene has really proven that Wawang Lake is rightly  a place for woman to fish and ranks as one of our top anglers.  We couldn't be more proud of her when she topped it all off with back to back trophy sized northern pike.

Farewell to Friends
The passing of one regular guests is always a difficult thing for us along with knowing that they will no longer be visiting us at the resort.
This year we lost two very special men that will be forever remembered and sadly missed by all of us.

Tom Tipler
El Paso, IL

We had the honor of knowing Tom for more than 10 years.  Tom - fondly known as Fluffy, was a frequent guest until his passing in June 2012.  His love and appreciation for the outdoors was quite apparent by how he drew fish to his boat.  A successful angler of many trophy fish Fluffy was an avid believer in releasing them as well.  We want to thank Fluffy for his years of loyalty to us and his catch & release practices.  The very best is wished for him on his new journey as we bid him a fond farewell!

Lloyd Carrigan
Minneapolis, MN

Lloyd wasn't just a guest at Wawang Lake - he was our dear friend.  We had the priviledge to visit with Lloyd on numerous occasions throughout the year and will always be grateful for the time we had together. The gentlest of men and the kindest person known Lloyd enjoyed Wawang Lake, fishing, fish fries and he was just the best company to have around!  Being a senior never stopped his love for the outdoors nor prohibited him from doing what he loved best like canoeing the many remote lakes in our area.  What a trooper this man was!   With every lapping wave that touches the shores of Wawang Lake we wave farewell to our dear friend.  He truly was one of a kind!  We'll really miss you Lloyd!
