Snowmobiling!
It's sledding season! The kind where hills are optional and gas is required, that is. Snowmobiling is a favorite means of winter transportation around here and there are plenty of trails to get you from point A to B to C and beyond. Our local club, the Burke Driftskippers, is made up of volunteers who maintain and groom the trails which wind through scenic and sometimes challenging mountain terrain across old logging roads and past vast farmlands. Check out their website for all you need to know before you ride and where to get your TMA or trail pass. A range of TMA's are available at local stores whether you need a pass for the whole season or just a few days. Before you head into the woods, gas up and grab some coffee at Kerrigan's Convenience & Cafe in West Burke. Try out their new full breakfast offerings or fuel up on their famous and gigantic cinnamon buns. You're sure to run into some locals who are happy to let you know about trail conditions and send you off in the right direction. If you start out on the East side of Burke, you can fuel up at East Burke Market and head inside for coffee, snacks for the ride and definitely grab yourself one of Holly's famous donuts! Enjoy a spot by the wood stove before you venture off into the woods. When lunchtime comes around, cruise back into East Burke for some of the best pizza around at the NEK Country Store. Or enjoy a hearty size grinder packed with goodness like the turkey gobbler or warm up with homemade soup or chili. Don't forget to venture upstairs and check out the locally made crafts and gift items. For lunch in West Burke, stop into Mike's Gas for great homemade specials like mac & cheese or shepherd's pie plus excellent soups and sandwiches. They are also known for an extensive selection of wines if you're looking for a post ride beverage to enjoy when get back home for the night. A great place to unwind with plenty of parking for snowmobiles and located right off a trail is Gil's Bar & Grill on Lake Willoughby. Stop in, take a load off at the bar and enjoy great food including fish & chips, the black Angus burger or grilled flatbread pizza. WINTER ADVENTURES AWAIT! |
