One Month/Two Seasons

September - time to take in the last days of summer and enjoy the oncoming of brisk fall air and the brilliant colors of autumn.  If you need a break after a busy summer or just want to get away for a bit with the kids and let the season linger on, Burke is the place to be with the perfect blend of the laid back country life amidst a mecca of outdoor adventures.   There's still plenty of time to go for a paddle, bike the trails or climb a mountain.   And, of course, the month is full of ways to celebrate the oncoming foliage season including our Annual Burke Fall Foliage Festival!
 Activities In & Around Town

It's almost time for the Annual Burke Fall Foliage Festival!   This year we are honoring our Olympians from Burke Mountain Academy and the region with a sports themed parade to kick things off at 10 am!  The craft fair offers all sorts of hand-crafted wares from local artists and crafters and, of course, you don't want to miss the BBQ.  The Vermont Institute of Natural Science will be on site with an owl, hawk and a falcon for an interactive raptor presentation.  There will be live music all day, kids games, bounce houses, arts & crafts tables, face painting, wagon rides and a local tradition, cow plop bingo!  This year the beer tent will be at Mike's Tiki Bar where you can purchase commemorative festival pint glasses and enjoy a specially priced beer special.  Local favorites, Tritium Well will be rocking the bar from 3 - 6 pm.

Unpack, Unwind, Stay a While

Choices abound when it comes to lodging in the area whether you want to enjoy nights under the stars at the campground or rent a whole house with acres of land to call your own.

Enjoy the pond and 13 acres of privacy at Play Hard Mountain Sports vacation rental in Kirby.  Located within minutes of the Bike Park and Kingdom Trails, this beautiful home sleeps 10, has a fully equipped kitchen, 3 bedrooms, a loft area, dining room and more.

The Village Inn of East Burke offers a great location walking distance to local stores and pubs, a spacious backyard to enjoy and room rates below $100 per night.  Rooms are beautifully decorated and meticulously maintained.  It's no wonder the Inn was named 'Best Northern Escape' by Yankee Magazine!

Bring the kids and the dog to the pet friendly, Lynburke Motel, located just a quick drive in either direction to the trails, Willoughby Lake, Lyndon State College, shops and restaurants.  Rates start at just $79 per night!

There's still time to get camping.  Moose River Campground in St. Johnsbury offers 48 spacious RV campsites and a scenic riverside location.  St. J offers lots to see and do and is home to the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium as well as Catamount Arts and many unique shops, galleries and restaurants.

Luxury among the wilderness!  Hawk Rock Cabins in Newark offers just that with stunning log cabins located on 2,600 acres with 40 miles of trails on site.   Cabins have 1 - 4 bedrooms, full kitchens, radiant heat, washer/dryers, decks, BBQ grills and all the privacy you could ask for.

Take a Hike!

It's the perfect time of year to go for a hike - not too hot or too cold to make the climb and enjoy the view.  There are quite a few trails to explore in the area and, although Kingdom Trails is mainly known for mountain biking, you are welcome to walk the trails or go for a  trail run.  Bikers are happy to share the trails with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

A great place to explore not too far from Burke is the Nulhegan Basin Division of the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge.  Among the 26,000 or so acres are forests, wetlands, swamps and a range of wildlife and bird species to catch sight of along the trails.  The visitor center offers maps and exhibits, all free to check out.

Take a drive over to Westmore to climb Mt. Pisgah and enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Willoughby from the top.  There are trailheads just beyond the south end of the lake or right across from the mid part of the lake.  Either way, it's about a 1,500 foot climb that gets a bit steep and rocky at the top, but it's well worth the view.

Across from the Southern trailhead of Mt. Pisgah is the unmarked CCC Road.  Follow it for about 2 miles to get to the trailhead for Mt. Hor.  The trail stays wide and seemingly flat for a bit and takes you to several vistas where you can just take in the view or continue on to connecting trails and an elevation gain of over 2,500 feet.

Just about 3 miles from the south end of Lake Willoughby is Long Pond Road which takes you to the Long Pond Trail and Haystack Mountain, so named for it's steep sides.  The Long Pond Trail offers an elevation of about 1,200 feet through open woods, old logging roads, streams and a spruce fir forest.  Haystack Mountain has an elevation of over 2,700 feet and offers two lookouts with views of Long Pond, Lake Willoughby and beyond.

In nearby Barton, follow Wheeler Pond Road to access several hiking trails of varying distance including the half mile Wheeler Pond Trail (home of the Gnome Stairs), Moose Mountain Trail which offers 1,800 feet of elevation and the steep Wheeler Mountain Trail with a summit elevation of over 2,000 feet.

On your way back to Burke, stop into
Kerrigan's to refuel with some of Judi's homemade cooking, a hearty sandwich or some pizza pie and ice cream.
