ANSI/ADA Grab Handle Placement Guidelines

Many of us are familiar with the ADA grab handle standards that require handles to be installed both behind and next to the toilet, but what about the ANSI recommendation to install a handle vertically?

The vertical handle is a more budget friendly option for the IllumaGrip® on projects where cost considerations may not allow for the horizontal handles. Below are the ANSI recommendations as well as a refresher on the ADA standards.

1) ADA Standards                 IllumaGrips - Healthcare
Handle Behind Toilet = 36" minimum length
Handle Adjacent Toilet = 42" max length
Handle Height = 33" - 36" above finished floor
Distance From Wall = 12" minimum from wall

2) ANSI Standards
Vertical Handle = 18" minimum length
Distance From Wall = 39" - 41" from wall
Handle Height = 39" - 41" above finished floor
**ANSI standards match ADA recommendations for horizontal installation**
