Start Your Own Business Class Graduation

A few of this year's graduates

Come mingle with the small businesses of tomorrow

The partnership of Flint Hills Technical College, the Kansas Small Business Development Center at Emporia State University and Emporia Main Street came together nine years ago to start a pilot program that helped area residents receive the educational resources they needed to start their own business.  Over the nine year span, forty-seven businesses have started up or expanded through their experience with the class.  Due to the support of ESB Financial, this year's class filled in record time with some awesome business concepts.

We already have class members looking for attorneys, bankers, insurance agents, graphic designers, real estate agents, media advertising consultants, sign suppliers and a host of other professionals that can assist them in turning their dream business into a reality.  If you want a chance to connect with, or simply congratulate members of this year's Start Your Own Business Class, join us in congratulating the latest graduates of the Start Your Own Business Class!  TONIGHT, March 12th from 7 pm-9 pm at Town Royal (405 Commercial Street), we will hand out graduation certificates, and celebrate entrepreneurs and volunteers that make the SYOB Class possible.

Join us for refreshments and show your support for all the good things happening in Emporia!

The SYOB Class is another innovative way that local volunteers are cooperating through unique partnerships to build tangible success stories.  We hope to see you tonight!

Im a Main Streeter

 Did you know???

Last week we helped a new business with some location specific information, hosted a
How It's Made tour, attended the CVB retreat, spoke to a retired teachers group, worked
with a few businesses seeking alternative financing, attended Start Your Own Business class meetings, did some pre-planning for upcoming work days, and worked to get over an awful cold that's been floating around... Some warmer weather and upcoming events gave us a lot of extra contact and some good questions from all of you
!

1.  "What did you learn from the Strategic Doing workshop?"- From a city official.  A few different things.  Strategic Doing reinforced the need for short meetings that accomplish more.  We talked a lot about metrics (measurements that you use in a pre-determined fashion to determine if your course of action is actually working or not), and we got the first glimpse of some new data about how Lyon County's trajectory compares with the rest of the region.  The workshop talked about creating a series of small "wins" as opposed to focusing on one large transformational project, and we talked about asset based strategies to improve our area.  You can CLICK HERE for more information from the conference.

2. "How many businesses do you think will come out of this year's Start Your Own Business Class?" From a community member.  Out of the eighteen class participants, I think we could have 10-12 of them in their own business concepts within the next two years.  I think we may have four or five of them in the next six months.

A big crowd attended last week's "How It's Made" Tour.  Click HERE for more information.

3. "So, are you sold out of Taste Tickets?!?"  From a frantic call to the office.  No, but we are sold out of the dinner portion of the event.  We have general Taste Tickets still available, but those are moving quickly.  So, I wouldn't wait too long if I were you...

4.  "What will the city's decision on "Black and Gold" zone incentives mean for you
?" From a community member that stopped by the office.
It means that we have more clarity in the information we can provide to potential developers.  There are a lot of different types of incentives that are available, in theory, for development.  However, not all incentive types work well in a dense core type of environment.  When we can get a clearer sense of everyone's needs and expectations, we can expedite processes and make appropriate development that integrates well with preexisting assets easier.  Now that we have a clearer directive, it's up to us to make redevelopment continue to happen.

5.  "How can I ask questions of City Commission candidates?" From a few local citizens at a passenger rail meeting.  City Commission elections are coming up this April.  There are two candidate forums scheduled at the moment.  One is at Flint Hills Technical College on Monday, March 23rd at 6:30 p.m. sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce.  The second debate style forum is on Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m. in the Emporia Granada Theatre and is sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Emporia Main Street.  If you would like to submit questions to the second debate in advance, you can e-mail your queries to [email protected] , or you can submit questions on the night of the event.
